Novel Features of Multiplicity Distributions in QCD and Experiment

The solution of QCD equations for generating functions of multiplicity distributions reveals new peculiar features of cumulant moments oscillating as functions of their rank. This prediction is supported by experimental data on $e^{+}e^{-}, hh, AA$ collisions. Evolution of the moments at smaller phase space bins leads to intermittency and fractality. The experimentally defined truncated generating functions possess zeros in the complex plane of the auxiliary variable recalling Lee-Yang zeros in statistical mechanics.

Scaling laws for density correlations and fluctuations in multiparticle dynamics

Experimental data are presented on particle correlations and fluctuations in various high-energy multiparticle collisions, with special emphasis on evidence for scaling-law evolution in small phase-space domains. The notions of intermittency and fractality as related to the above findings are described. Phenomenological and theoretical work on the subject is reviewed.

LARGE CORRELATIONS IN PARTICLE PRODUCTION AND SQUEEZING PHENOMENA

Recent developments in studies of multiparticle correlations in high energy particle collisions are reviewed. Both experimental data and theoretical results in quantum chromodynamics are discussed. Application of the developed methods to the coherent, squeezed and correlated states of photons is considered. Some speculations concerning possible coherent and squeezed states of pion fields as well as their specific features are described.

Squeezed and Correlated States of Quantum Fields and Multiplicity Particle Distributions

The primary aim of the present paper is to attract the attention of particle physicists to new developments in studying squeezed and correlated states of the electromagnetic field as well as of those working on the latest topic to new findings about multiplicity distributions in quantum chromodynamics. The new types of nonclassical states used in quantum optics as squeezed states, correlated states, even and odd coherent states (Schrödinger cat states) for one--mode and multimode interaction are reviewed. Their distribution functions are analyzed according to the method used first for multiplicity distributions in high energy particle interactions. The phenomenon of oscillations of particle distribution functions of the squeezed fields is described and confronted to the phenomenon of oscillations of cumulant moments of some distributions for squeezed and correlated field states. Possible extension of the method to fields different from the electromagnetic field (gluons, pions, etc.) is speculated.

Intermittency and Bose-Einstein correlations

The role of Bose-Einstein correlations in a widely discussed intermittency phenomenon is reviewed. In particular, it is shown that particle correlations of different origin are better displayed when analysed as functions of appropriately chosen variables. Correspondingly, if the shape of Bose-Einstein contribution is chosen to be Gaussian in 3-momentum transferred, it provides the power-like law in 4-momentum squared and is smeared out in (pseudo)rapidity.

Multiparticle Production and Statistical Analogies

The study of the singularities and zeros of the generating functions of multiplicity distributions is advocated. Some hints from well known probability distributions and experimental data are given. The statistical mechanics analogies provoke to look for a signature of phase transitions. The program of further experimental studies of the singularities is formulated.

Multiplicity Distributions in QCD at Very High Energies

Recent results in QCD on multiplicity distributions are briefly reviewed. QCD is able to predict very tiny features of multiplicity distributions which demonstrate that the negative binomial distribution (and, more generally, any infinitely divisible distribution) is inappropriate for precise description of experimental data. New fits of high energy multiplicity distributions can be derived.

Cumulants of QCD Multiplicity Distributions in Small Phase Space Bins

It is shown that, as functions of their rank, cumulants of QCD multiplicity distributions in small phase space bins possess the quasi- oscillating behavior similar to that found for them in the total rapidity range. First minimum moves to lower ranks for smaller bins. For the total rapidity range, it moves to higher ranks with energy increase. The running property of the QCD coupling constant is in charge of these effects which can be verified in experiment.

Quantum Chromodynamics and Multiplicity Distributions

Quantum chromodymamics (QCD) approach to the problem of multiplicity distributions in high energy particle collisions is described. The solutions of QCD equations for generating functions of the multiplicity distributions in gluon and quark jets are presented for both fixed and running coupling constants. The newly found characteristics very sensitive to distribution shapes is discussed. The predictions are confronted to experimental data. Evolution of the multiplicity distributions with decreasing phase space windows is considered and discussed in connection to the notions of intermittency and fractality. Some other QCD effects are briefly described.

Cumulant to Factorial Moment Ratio and Multiplicity Data

The ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of experimental multiplicity distributions has been calculated for $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $hh$ interactions in a wide range of energies. As a function of the rank it exhibits an initial steep decrease and a series of oscillations around zero. Those features cannot be reproduced by the Negative Binomial Distribution. A comparable behaviour is instead predicted in high-energy perturbative QCD. The presence of a qualitatively similar behaviour for different processes and in wide energy intervals suggests speaking of an approximate scaling of the cumulant to factorial moment ratio.

Cumulant to Factorial Moment Ratio and Multiplicity Distributions

The ratio of cumulant to factorial moments of multiplicity distribu- tions has been calculated for e+e- and hh data in a wide range of energies. As a function of the rank it exhibits a regular behaviour with a steep descent and two negative minima. This behaviour is not accounted for by NBD, that leads to a monotonically decreasing positive-defined ratio. A rough comparison with QCD predictions is done: data cannot be accounted for by LLA nor by DLA; only some next-to-next to leading predictions are in qualitative agreement with them. Such features being appropriate for hard processes and high energies, it is a surpri- se to find them not only in e+e- annihilation, but also in soft hh collisions.
