Statistically significant observation of and cross sections for a new nuclear reaction channel on 197Au with bound dineutron escape

A new nuclear reaction channel on 197Au with the neutron as a projectile and a bound dineutron (^2n) in the output channel is considered based on available experimental observations. The dineutron is assumed to be formed as a particle-satellite, separated from the volume but not from the potential well of 196Au nucleus. The dineutron was identified by statistically significant radioactivity detection due to decay of 196gAu nuclei. Cross sections for the 197Au (n,^2n) 196gAu reaction are determined as 180 +/- 60 microbarns and 37 +/- 8 microbarns for [6.09-6.39] and [6.175-6.455] MeV energy ranges, correspondingly. Possible outcomes of dineutron detection near the surface of deformed nuclei are also raised and discussed.

A new type nuclear reaction on 159Tb in the outgoing channel considering observation of a bound dineutron

A new type nuclear reaction on 159Tb with neutrons and protons in the incident channels and a bound dineutron (2n) in the output channel is considered based on available experimental observations. The dineutron is assumed to be separated from the volume but not from the potential well of the residual nucleus. Such configuration represents a nuclear system with a satellite dineutron located at few fm distances from the surface of the residual nucleus. Due to dineutron disintegration the decay products may react with the residual nuclei, leading to their transformations much faster than expected.

Experimental Evidence of a Bonded Dineutron Existence

Experimental observation of 159Tb(n,2n) reaction product was performed with application of the activation technique. Tb specimen of natural composition was irradiated with (d,d) neutrons of 5.39 and 7 MeV energy at the AMANDE neutron generating facility. Several instrumental spectra of Tb specimen were measured with HPGe spectrometer in 1.5 years after last irradiation. An unexpected 944.2 keV γ-ray peak was observed. Other γ-ray lines of 158Tb were identified as well. A bonded dineutron emission with the binding energy (Bdn) within limitations 1.3 MeV < Bdn < 2.8 MeV is evidenced by the energy of incident neutrons and by 158Tb presence in output channel. The specific nuclear properties of 158Tb as deformed nucleus were then discussed to explain a bonded dineutron formation with certain half-lives based on theoretical assumptions and corresponding calculations, using standard parameters for this mass region.

Verification of Models for Calculation of E1 Radiative Strength

Photoabsorption cross sections and gamma-decay strength function are calculated and compared with experimental data to test the existing models of dipole radiative strength functions (RSF) for the middle-weight and heavy atomic nuclei. Simplified version of the modified Lorentzian model are proposed. New tables of giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters are given. It is shown that the phenomenological closed-form models with asymmetric shape can be used for overall estimates of the dipole RSF in the gamma -ray energy region up to about 20 MeV when GDR parameters are known or the GDR systematics can be adopted. Otherwise, the HFB-QRPA microscopic model and the semi-classical approach with moving surface appear to be more adequate methods to estimate the dipole photoabsorption RSF.
