Magnetic-field-driven localization of light in a cold-atom gas

We discover a transition from extended to localized quasi-modes for light in a gas of immobile two-level atoms in a magnetic field. The transition takes place either upon increasing the number density of atoms in a strong field or upon increasing the field at a high enough density. It has many characteristic features of a disorder-driven (Anderson) transition but is strongly influenced by near-field interactions between atoms and the anisotropy of the atomic medium induced by the magnetic field.

Alignment dynamics of slow light diffusion in ultracold atomic $^{85}$Rb

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of time- and alignment-dependent propagation of light in an ultracold atomic gas of atomic $^{85}$Rb is reported. Coherences among the scattering amplitudes for light scattering off excited hyperfine levels produce strong variations of the light polarization in the vicinity of atomic resonance. Measurements are in excellent agreement with Monte-Carlo simulations of the multiple scattering process.

Microscopic Lensing by a Dense, Cold Atomic Sample

We demonstrate that a cold, dense sample of 87Rb atoms can exhibit a micron-scale lensing effect, much like that associated with a macroscopically-sized lens. The experiment is carried out in the fashion of traditional z-scan measurements but in much weaker fields and where close attention is paid to the detuning dependence of the transmitted light. The results are interpreted using numerical simulations and by modeling the sample as a thin lens with a spherical focal length.

Cooperatively enhanced light transmission in cold atomic matter

We report enhanced transmission in measurements of the spectral dependence of forward light scattering by a high-density and cold ensemble of 87Rb atoms. This phenomenon, which is a result of dipole-dipole interaction induced cooperative light scattering in the atomic sample, implies a significant departure from the traditional density dependence of the transmitted light as embodied in the Beer-Lambert Law. Absolute values of the density-dependent forward light scattering cross-section are extracted from the measurements.

Optical Manipulation of Light Scattering in Cold Atomic Rubidium

A brief perspective on light scattering in dense and cold atomic rubidium is presented. We particularly focus on the influence of auxiliary applied fields on the system response to a weak and nearly resonant probe field. Auxiliary fields can strongly disturb light propagation; in addition to the steady state case, dynamically interesting effects appear clearly in both the time domain, and in the optical polarization dependence of the processes. Following a general introduction, two examples of features found in such studies are presented. These include nonlinear optical effects in (a) comparative studies of forward- and fluorescence-configuration scattering under combined excitation of a control and probe field, and (b) manipulation of the spatial structure of the optical response due to a light shifting strong applied field.

Canonical fitness model for simple scale-free graphs

We consider a fitness model assumed to generate simple graphs with power-law heavy-tailed degree sequence: P(k) \propto k^{-1-α} with 0 < α< 1, in which the corresponding distributions do not posses a mean. We discuss the situations in which the model is used to produce a multigraph and examine what happens if the multiple edges are merged to a single one and thus a simple graph is built. We give the relation between the (normalized) fitness parameter r and the expected degree νof a node and show analytically that it possesses non-trivial intermediate and final asymptotic behaviors. We show that the model produces P(k) \propto k^{-2} for large values of k independent of α. Our analytical findings are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Spatial distribution of optically induced atomic excitation in a dense and cold atomic ensemble

On the basis of our general theoretical results developed previously in JETP 112, 246 (2011), we calculate the spatial distribution of atoms excited in a dense and cold atomic cloud by weak monochromatic light. We also study the atomic distribution over different Zeeman sublevels of the excited state in different parts of the cloud. The dependence of this distribution of atomic excitation on the density of the atomic ensemble and the frequency of external emission is investigated. We show that in the boundary regions of the cloud the orientation and alignment of atomic angular momentum takes place. Analysis of the spatial distribution of atomic excitation shows no noticeable signs of light localization effects even in those parameter regimes where the Ioffe-Regel criterium of strong localization is satisfied. However, comparative calculations performed in the framework of the scalar approximation to the dipole-dipole interaction reveals explicit manifestation of strong localization under some conditions.

Non-spectral relaxation in one dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes

The relaxation of a dissipative system to its equilibrium state often shows a multiexponential pattern with relaxation rates, which are typically considered to be independent of the initial condition. The rates follow from the spectrum of a Hermitian operator obtained by a similarity transformation of the initial Fokker-Planck operator. However, some initial conditions are mapped by this similarity transformation to functions which grow at infinity. These cannot be expanded in terms of the eigenfunctions of an Hermitian operator, and show different relaxation patterns. Considering the exactly solvable examples of Gaussian and generalized Lévy Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes (OUPs) we show that the relaxation rates belong to the Hermitian spectrum only if the initial condition belongs to the domain of attraction of the stable distribution defining the noise. While for an ordinary OUP initial conditions leading to non-spectral relaxation can be considered exotic, for generalized OUPs driven by Lévy noise these are the rule.

Multiple light scattering on the F = 1 - F' = 0 transition in a cold and high density 87Rb vapor

We report an experimental study of near resonance light scattering on the $F = 1 \rightarrow F' = 0$ component of the $D_2$ line in atomic $^{87}Rb$. Experiments are performed on spatially bi-Gaussian ultracold gas samples having peak densities ranging from about $5 \cdot 10^{12} - 5 \cdot 10^{13}$ atoms/cm$^{3}$ and for a range of resonance saturation parameters and detunings from atomic resonance. Time resolution of the scattered light intensity reveals dynamics of multiple light scattering, optical pumping, and saturation effects. The experimental results in steady-state are compared qualitatively with theoretical models of the light scattering process. The steady-state line shape of the excitation spectrum is in good qualitative agreement with these models.

Near-resonance Light Scattering from a High-density, Ultracold Atomic $^{87}$Rb Gas

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of near resonance light scattering from a high-density and ultracold atomic $^{87}$Rb gas. The atomic sample, having a peak density $\sim 5\cdot10^{13}$ atoms/cm$^{3}$, temperature $\sim$ 65 $μ$K and initially prepared in the F = 1 lower energy $^{87}$Rb hyperfine component, is optically pumped to the higher energy F = 2 hyperfine level. Measurements are made of the transient hyperfine pumping process and of the time evolution of scattering of near resonance probe radiation on the $F = 2 \rightarrow F' = 3$ transition. Features of the density, detuning, and temporal dependence of the signals are attributed to the high density and consequent large optical depth of the samples.

A scaling law for light scattering from dense and cold atomic ensembles

We calculate the differential cross section of polarized light scattering from a cold and dense atomic ensemble. The regularities in the transformation of the cross section when increasing the size of the atomic ensemble are analyzed numerically. We show that for typical experimental conditions, an approximate scaling law can be obtained. Very good agreement is found in a comparison with experimental data on the size dependence of a dense and cold cloud of 87$Rb atoms.

Quantum hologram of macroscopically entangled light via the mechanism of diffuse light storage

In the present paper we consider a quantum memory scheme for light diffusely propagating through a spatially disordered atomic gas. The diffuse trapping of the signal light pulse can be naturally integrated with the mechanism of stimulated Raman conversion into a long-lived spin coherence. Then the quantum state of the light can be mapped onto the disordered atomic spin subsystem and can be stored in it for a relatively long time. The proposed memory scheme can be applicable for storage of the macroscopic analog of the $Ψ^{(-)}$ Bell state and the prepared entangled atomic state performs its quantum hologram, which suggests the possibility of further quantum information processing.

Dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of dense and ultracold atomic gases

On the basis of general theoretical results developed previously in JETP 112, 246 (2011) we analyze the atomic polarization created by weak monochromatic light in an optically thick, dense and cold atomic ensemble. We show that the amplitude of the polarization averaged over a uniform random atomic distribution decreases exponentially beyond the boundary regions. The phase of this polarization increases linearly with increasing penetration into the medium. On these grounds, we determine numerically the wavelength of the light in the dense atomic medium, its extinction coefficient, and the complex refractive index and dielectric constant of the medium. The dispersion of the permittivity is investigated for different atomic densities. It is shown that for dense clouds, the real part of the permittivity is negative in some spectral domains.

Coherent control of diffuse light dynamics in an ultracold atomic gas

We show that coherent multiple light scattering, or diffuse light propagation, in a disordered atomic medium, prepared at ultra-low temperatures, can be be effectively delayed in the presence of a strong control field initiating a stimulated Raman process. On a relatively short time scale, when the atomic system can preserve its configuration and effects of atomic motion can be ignored, the scattered signal pulse, diffusely propagating via multiple coherent scattering through the medium, can be stored in the spin subsystem through its stimulated Raman-type conversion into spin coherence. We demonstrate how this mechanism, potentially interesting for developing quantum memories, would work for the example of a coherent light pulse propagating through an alkali-metal atomic vapor under typical conditions attainable in experiments with ultracold atoms.

Coherent backscattering under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

We consider the influence of a resonant control field on weak localization of light in ultracold atomic ensembles. Both steady-state and pulsed light excitation are considered. We show that the presence of a control field essentially changes the type of interference effects which occur under conditions of multiple scattering. For example, for some scattering polarization channels the presence of a control field can cause destructive interference through which the enhancement factor, normally considered to be greater than one, becomes less than one.

Microscopic Theory of Scattering of Weak Electromagnetic Radiation by a Dense Ensemble of Ultracold Atoms

Based on the developed quantum microscopic theory, the interaction of weak electromagnetic radiation with dense ultracold atomic clouds is described in detail. The differential and total cooperative scattering cross sections are calculated for monochromatic radiation as particular examples of application of the general theory. The angular, spectral, and polarization properties of scattered light are determined. The dependence of these quantities on the sample size and concentration of atoms is studied and the influence of collective effects is analyzed.

Asymptotic front behavior in an $A+B\rightarrow 2A$ reaction under subdiffusion

We discuss the front propagation in the $A+B\rightarrow 2A$ reaction under subdiffusion which is described by continuous time random walks with a heavy-tailed power law waiting time probability density function. Using a crossover argument, we discuss the two scaling regimes of the front propagation: an intermediate asymptotic regime given by the front solution of the corresponding continuous equation, and the final asymptotics, which is fluctuation-dominated and therefore lays out of reach of the continuous scheme. We moreover show that the continuous reaction subdiffusion equation indeed possesses a front solution that decelerates and becomes narrow in the course of time. This continuous description breaks down for larger times when the front gets atomically sharp. We show that the velocity of such fronts decays in time faster than in the continuous regime.
