Sensitivity Studies for Third-Generation Gravitational Wave Observatories

Advanced gravitational wave detectors, currently under construction, are expected to directly observe gravitational wave signals of astrophysical origin. The Einstein Telescope, a third-generation gravitational wave detector, has been proposed in order to fully open up the emerging field of gravitational wave astronomy. In this article we describe sensitivity models for the Einstein Telescope and investigate potential limits imposed by fundamental noise sources. A special focus is set on evaluating the frequency band below 10Hz where a complex mixture of seismic, gravity gradient, suspension thermal and radiation pressure noise dominates. We develop the most accurate sensitivity model, referred to as ET-D, for a third-generation detector so far, including the most relevant fundamental noise contributions.

Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures

We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively.

Shunt-capacitor-assisted synchronization of oscillations in intrinsic Josephson junctions stack

We show that shunt capacitor stabilizes synchronized oscillations in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks biased by DC current. This synchronization mechanism has an effect similar to the previously discussed radiative coupling between junctions, however, it is not defined by the geometry of the stack. It is particularly important in crystals with smaller number of junctions, where radiation coupling is week, and is comparable with the effect of strong super-radiation in crystal with many junctions. The shunt also helps to enter the phase-locked regime in the beginning of oscillations, after switching on the bias current. Shunt may be used to tune radiation power, which drops as shunt capacitance increases.

Spectral analysis of polynomial potentials and its relation with ABJ/M-type theories

We obtain a general class of polynomials for which the Schrodinger operator has a discrete spectrum. This class includes all the scalar potentials in membrane, 5-brane, p-branes, multiple M2 branes, BLG and ABJM theories. We provide a proof of the discreteness of the spectrum of the associated Schrodinger operators. This a a first step in order to analyze BLG and ABJM supersymmetric theories from a non-perturbative point of view.

Localized ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy in permalloy-cobalt films

We report Ferromagnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (FMRFM) experiments on a justaposed continuous films of permalloy and cobalt. Our studies demonstrate the capability of FMRFM to perform local spectroscopy of different ferromagnetic materials. Theoretical analysis of the uniform resonance mode near the edge of the film agrees quantitatively with experimental data. Our experiments demonstrate the micron scale lateral resolution in determining local magnetic properties in continuous ferromagnetic samples.

Knockout of proton-neutron pairs from $^{16}$O with electromagnetic probes

After recent improvements to the Pavia model of two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}$O with electromagnetic probes the calculated cross sections are compared to experimental data from such reactions. Comparison with data from a measurement of the $^{16}$O(e,e$'$pn) reaction show much better agreement between experiment and theory than was previously observed. In a comparison with recent data from a measurement of the $^{16}$O($γ$,pn) reaction the model over-predicts the measured cross section at low missing momentum.

Observation of localized ferromagnetic resonance in a continuous ferromagnetic film via magnetic resonance force microscopy

We present Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (MRFM) measurements of Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) in a 50 nm thick permalloy film, tilted with respect to the direction of the external magnetic field. At small probe-sample distances the MRFM spectrum breaks up into multiple modes, which we identify as local ferromagnetic resonances confined by the magnetic field of the MRFM tip. Micromagnetic simulations support this identification of the modes and show they are stabilized in the region where the dipolar tip field has a component anti-parallel to the applied field.

Investigation of the Exclusive ^{3}He(e,e'pn)p Reaction

Cross sections for the ^{3}He(e,e'pn)p reaction were measured for the first time at energy transfers of 220 and 270 MeV for several momentum transfers ranging from 300 to 450 MeV/c. Cross sections are presented as a function of the momentum of the recoil proton and the momentum transfer. Continuum Faddeev calculations using the Argonne V18 and Bonn-B nucleon-nucleon potentials overestimate the measured cross sections by a factor 5 at low recoil proton momentum with the discrepancy becoming much smaller at higher recoil momentum.

Noncommutative associative superproduct for general supersymplectic forms

We define a noncommutative and nonanticommutative associative product for general supersymplectic forms, allowing the explicit treatment of non(anti)commutative field theories from general nonconstant string backgrounds like a graviphoton field. We propose a generalization of deformation quantization a la Fedosov to superspace, which considers noncommutativity in the tangent bundle instead of base space, by defining the Weyl super product of elements of Weyl super algebra bundles. Super Poincare symmetry is not broken and chirality seems not to be compromised in our formulation. We show that, for a particular case, the projection of the Weyl super product to the base space gives rise the Moyal product for non(anti)commutative theories.

Spatial characterization of the magnetic field profile of a probe tip used in magnetic resonance force microscopy

We have developed the experimental approach to characterize spatial distribution of the magnetic field produced by cantilever tips used in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). We performed MRFM measurements on a well characterized diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) film and mapped the 3D field profile produced by a Nd2Fe14B probe tip. Using our technique field profiles of arbitrarily shaped probe magnets can be imaged.

Kondo Stripes in an Anderson-Heisenberg Model of Heavy Fermion Systems

We study the interplay between the spin-liquid and Kondo physics, as related to the non-magnetic part of the phase diagram of heavy fermion materials. Within the unrestricted mean-field treatment of the infinite-$U$ 2D Anderson-Heisenberg model, we find that there are two topologically distinct non-degenerate uniform heavy Fermi liquid states that may form as a consequence of the Kondo coupling between spinons and conduction electrons. For certain carrier concentrations the uniform Fermi liquid becomes unstable with respect to formation of a new kind of anharmonic "Kondo stripe" state with inhomogeneous Kondo screening strength and the charge density modulation. These feature are experimentally measurable, and thus may help to establish the relevance of the spin-liquid correlations to heavy fermion materials.

Nonperturbative SL(2,Z) (p,q)-strings manifestly realized on the quantum M2

The SL(2,Z) duality symmetry of IIB superstring is naturally realized on the D=11 supermembrane restricted to have central charges arising from a nontrivial wrapping. This supermembrane is minimally immersed on the target space (MIM2). The hamiltonian of the MIM2 has a discrete quantum spectrum. It is manifestly invariant under the SL(2,Z) symmetry associated to the conformal symmetry on the base manifold and under a SL(2,Z) symmetry on the moduli of the target space. The mass contribution of the string states on the MIM2 is obtained by freezing the remaining degrees of freedom. It exactly agrees with the perturbative spectrum of the (p,q) IIB and IIA superstring compactified on a circle. We also construct a MIM2 in terms of a dual target space, then a (p,q) set of non-perturbative states associated to the IIA superstring is obtained.

Photon pressure induced test mass deformation in gravitational-wave detectors

A widely used assumption within the gravitational-wave community has so far been that a test mass acts like a rigid body for frequencies in the detection band, i.e. for frequencies far below the first internal resonance. In this article we demonstrate that localized forces, applied for example by a photon pressure actuator, can result in a non-negligible elastic deformation of the test masses. For a photon pressure actuator setup used in the gravitational wave detector GEO600 we measured that this effect modifies the standard response function by 10% at 1 kHz and about 100% at 2.5 kHz.

The discrete spectrum of the D=11 bosonic M5-brane

We prove that the spectrum of the regularized M5-brane in D=11 target space is discrete with eigenvalues extending to infinity. The proof includes the same result for the spectra of regularized bosonic p-branes in general.

Commensurate-incommensurate transition and associated collective modes in the stripe state of cuprates near 1/8 hole-doping

We analyze the anomalous behavior in hole-doped cuprates near 1/8 doping in terms of the commensurate-incommensurate transition of a stripe phase. Based on an effective Ginzburg-Landau theory appropriate for weak pinning, we calculate the commensurate-incommensurate transition point and the energies of the phason and amplitudon collective modes. Using experimentally available parameters, we estimate the phason gap (pinning frequency), the conductivity and the contribution of the phason mode to the dielectric function.

Ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy on a thin permalloy film

Ferromagnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (FMRFM) offers a means of performing local ferromagnetic resonance. We have studied the evolution of the FMRFM force spectra in a continuous 50 nm thick permalloy film as a function of probe-film distance and performed numerical simulations of the intensity of the FMRFM probe-film interaction force, accounting for the presence of the localized strongly nonuniform magnetic field of the FMRFM probe magnet. Excellent agreement between the experimental data and the simulation results provides insight into the mechanism of FMR mode excitation in an FMRFM experiment.

Efficiency of thin film photocells

We propose a new concept for the design of high-efficiency photocells based on ultra-thin (submicron) semiconductor films of controlled thickness. Using a microscopic model of a thin dielectric layer interacting with incident electromagnetic radiation we evaluate the efficiency of conversion of solar radiation into the electric power. We determine the optimal range of parameters which maximize the efficiency of such photovoltaic element.

Coherent macroscopic quantum tunneling in boson-fermion mixtures

We show that the cold atom systems of simultaneously trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) and quantum degenerate fermionic atoms provide promising laboratories for the study of macroscopic quantum tunneling. Our theoretical studies reveal that the spatial extent of a small trapped BEC immersed in a Fermi sea can tunnel and coherently oscillate between the values of the separated and mixed configurations (the phases of the phase separation transition of BEC-fermion systems). We evaluate the period, amplitude and dissipation rate for $^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K-atoms and we discuss the experimental prospects for observing this phenomenon.
