Dynamical Ordering of Driven Stripe Phases in Quenched Disorder

We examine the dynamics and stripe formation in a system with competing short and long range interactions in the presence of both an applied dc drive and quenched disorder. Without disorder, the system forms stripes organized in a labyrinth state. We find that, when the disorder strength exceeds a critical value, an applied dc drive can induce a dynamical stripe ordering transition to a state that is more ordered than the originating undriven, unpinned pattern. We show that signatures in the structure factor and transport properties correspond to this dynamical reordering transition, and we present the dynamic phase diagram as a function of strengths of disorder and dc drive.

A scheme for electrical detection of spin resonance signal from a single electron trap

We study a scheme for electrical detection of the spin resonance (ESR) of a single electron trapped near a Field Effect Transistor (FET) conduction channel. In this scheme, the resonant Rabi oscillations of the trapped electron spin cause a modification of the average occupancy of a shallow trap, which can be detected through the change in the FET channel resistivity. We show that the dependence of the channel resistivity on the frequency of the rf field can have either peak or dip at the Larmor frequency of the electron spin in the trap.

Quantum Dynamics in Non-equilibrium Strongly Correlated Environments

We consider a quantum point contact between two Luttinger liquids coupled to a mechanical system (oscillator). For non-vanishing bias, we find an effective oscillator temperature that depends on the Luttinger parameter. A generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation connects the decoherence and dissipation of the oscillator to the current-voltage characteristics of the device. Via a spectral representation, this result is generalized to arbitrary leads in a weak tunneling regime.

Theory of single spin detection with STM

We propose a mechanism for detection of a single spin center on a non-magnetic substrate. In the detection scheme, the STM tunnel current is correlated with the spin orientation. In the presence of magnetic field, the spin precesses and the tunnel current is modulated at the Larmor frequency. The mechanism relies on the effective spin-orbit interaction between the injected unpolarized STM current and the local spin center, which leads to the nodal structure of the spatial signal profile. Based on the proposed mechanism, the strongest spin-related signal can be expected for the systems with large spin-orbit coupling and low carrier concentration.

Gerbes and Duality

We describe a global approach to the study of duality transformations between antisymmetric fields with transitions and argue that the natural geometrical setting for the approach is that of gerbes, these objects are mathematical constructions generalizing U(1) bundles and are similarly classified by quantized charges. We address the duality maps in terms of the potentials rather than on their field strengths and show the quantum equivalence between dual theories which in turn allows a rigorous proof of a generalized Dirac quantization condition on the couplings. Our approach needs the introduction of an auxiliary form satisfying a global constraint which in the case of 1-form potentials coincides with the quantization of the magnetic flux. We apply our global approach to refine the proof of the duality equivalence between d=11 supermembrane and d=10 IIA Dirichlet supermembrane.

Measurement induced quantum-classical transition

A model of an electrical point contact coupled to a mechanical system (oscillator) is studied to simulate the dephasing effect of measurement on a quantum system. The problem is solved at zero temperature under conditions of strong non-equilibrium in the measurement apparatus. For linear coupling between the oscillator and tunneling electrons, it is found that the oscillator dynamics becomes damped, with the effective temperature determined by the voltage drop across the junction. It is demonstrated that both the quantum heating and the quantum damping of the oscillator manifest themselves in the current-voltage characteristic of the point contact.

Impurity states and interlayer tunneling in high temperature superconductors

We argue that the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) images of resonant states generated by doping Zn or Ni impurities into Cu-O planes of BSCCO are the result of quantum interference of the impurity signal coming from several distinct paths. The impurity image seen on the surface is greatly affected by interlayer tunneling matrix elements. We find that the optimal tunneling path between the STM tip and the metal (Cu, Zn, or Ni) $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ orbitals in the Cu-O plane involves intermediate excited states. This tunneling path leads to the four-fold nonlocal filter of the impurity state in Cu-O plane that explains the experimental impurity spectra. Applications of the tunneling filter to the Cu vacancy defects and ``direct'' tunneling into Cu-O planes are also discussed.

Critical magnetic fluctuations induced superconductivity and residual density of states in $CeRhIn_5$ superconductor

We propose the multiband extension of the spin-fermion model to address the superconducting d-wave pairing due to magnetic interaction near critical point. We solve the unrestricted gap equation with a general d-wave symmetry gap and find that divergent magnetic correlation length $ξ$ leads to the very unharmonic shape of the gap function with shallow gap regions near nodes. These regions are extremely sensitive to disorder. Small impurity concentration induces substantial residual density of states. We argue that we can understand the large $N_{res}(0) = \lim_{T\to 0} C_p(T)/T$ value and its pressure dependence of the recently discovered $CeRhIn_5$ superconductor under pressure within this approach.

Depinning and Dynamics of Systems with Competing Interactions in Quenched Disorder

We examine the depinning and driven dynamics of a system in which there is a competition between long range Coulomb repulsive and short range attractive interactions. In the absence of disorder the system forms Wigner crystal, stripe, and clump phases as the attractive interaction is increased. With quenched disorder, these phases are fragmented and there is a finite depinning threshold. The stripe phase is the most strongly pinned and shows hysteretic transport properties. At higher drives beyond depinning, a dynamical reordering transition occurs in all the phases, which is associated with a characteristic transport signature.

On the spectrum of a matrix model for the D=11 supermembrane compactified on a torus with non-trivial winding

The spectrum of the Hamiltonian of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial central charge or equivalently the non-commutative symplectic super Maxwell theory is analyzed. In distinction to what occurs for the D=11 supermembrane in Minkowski target space where the bosonic potential presents string-like spikes which render the spectrum of the supersymmetric model continuous, we prove that the potential of the bosonic compactified membrane with non-trivial central charge is strictly positive definite and becomes infinity in all directions when the norm of the configuration space goes to infinity. This ensures that the resolvent of the bosonic Hamiltonian is compact. We find an upper bound for the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues.

Symplectic connections, Noncommutative Yang Mills theory and Supermembranes

In built noncommutativity of supermembranes with central charges in eleven dimensions is disclosed. This result is used to construct an action for a noncommutative supermembrane where interesting topological terms appear. In order to do so, we first set up a global formulation for noncommutative Yang Mills theory over general symplectic manifolds. We make the above constructions following a pure geometrical procedure using the concept of connections over Weyl algebra bundles on symplectic manifolds. The relation between noncommutative and ordinary supermembrane actions is discussed.

D-branes, Symplectomorphisms and Noncommutative Gauge Theories

It is shown that the dual of the double compactified D=11 Supermembrane and a suitable compactified D=10 Super 4D-brane with nontrivial wrapping on the target space may be formulated as noncommutative gauge theories. The Poisson bracket over the world-volume is intrinsically defined in terms of the minima of the hamiltonian of the theory, which may be expressed in terms of a non degenerate 2-form. A deformation of the Poisson bracket in terms of the Moyal brackets is then performed. A noncommutative gauge theory in terms of the Moyal star bracket is obtained. It is shown that all these theories may be described in terms of symplectic connections on symplectic fibrations. The world volume being its base manifold and the (sub)group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms generate the symplectomorphisms which preserve the (infinite dimensional) Poisson bracket of the fibration.

Compactified D=11 Supermembranes and Symplectic Non-Commutative Gauge Theories

It is shown that a double compactified D=11 supermembrane with non trivial wrapping may be formulated as a symplectic non-commutative gauge theory on the world volume. The symplectic non commutative structure is intrinsically obtained from the symplectic 2-form on the world volume defined by the minimal configuration of its hamiltonian. The gauge transformations on the symplectic fibration are generated by the area preserving diffeomorphisms on the world volume. Geometrically, this gauge theory corresponds to a symplectic fibration over a compact Riemman surface with a symplectic connection.

Impurity induced resonant state in a pseudogap state of a high temperature superconductor

We predict a resonance impurity state generated by the substitution of one Cu atom with a nonmagnetic atom, such as Zn, in the pseudogap state of a high-T_c superconductor. The precise microscopic origin of the pseudogap is not important for this state to be formed, in particular this resonance will be present even in the absence of superconducting fluctuations in the normal state. In the presence of superconducting fluctuations, we predict the existence of a counterpart impurity peak on a symmetric bias. The nature of impurity resonance is similar to the previously studied resonance in the d-wave superconducting state.

Stable Solutions of the Double Compactified D=11 Supermembrane Dual

The hamiltonian formulation of the supersymmetric closed 2-brane dual to the double compactified D=11 closed supermembrane is presented. The formulation is in terms of two U(1) vector fields related by the area preserving constraint of the SUSY 2-brane. Stable solutions of the field equations, which are local minima of the hamiltonian, are found. In the semiclassical approximation around the stable solutions the action becomes the reduction of D=10 Super-Maxwell to the worldvolume. The solutions carry RR charges as a type of magnetic charges associated with the worldvolume vector field. The geometrical interpretation of the solution in terms of U(1) line bundles over the worldvolume is obtained.

On Some Stability Properties of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

We desribe the minimal configurations of the bosonic membrane potential, when the membrane wraps up in an irreducible way over $S^{1}\times S^{1}$. The membrane 2-dimensional spatial world volume is taken as a Riemann Surface of genus $g$ with an arbitrary metric over it. All the minimal solutions are obtained and described in terms of 1-forms over an associated U(1) fiber bundle, extending previous results. It is shown that there are no infinite dimensional valleys at the minima.

On the Geometry on Antisymmetric Fields

The geometry of antisymmetric fields with nontrivial transitions over a base manifold is described in terms of exact sequences of cohomology groups. This formulation leads naturally to the appearance of nontrivial topological charges associated to the periods of the curvature of the antisymmetric fields. The relation between the partition functions of dual theories is carefully studied under the most general assumptions, and new topological factors related to zero modes and the Ray Singer torsion are found.

On the Stability of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

We prove D=11 supermembrane theories wrapping around in an irreducible way over $S^{1} \times S^{1}\times M^{9}$ on the target manifold, have a hamiltonian with strict minima and without infinite dimensional valleys at the minima for the bosonic sector. The minima occur at monopole connections of an associated U(1) bundle over topologically non trivial Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. Explicit expressions for the minimal connections in terms of membrane maps are presented. The minimal maps and corresponding connections satisfy the BPS condition with half SUSY.
