Neutrino Scattering: Connections Across Theory and Experiment

In this document drafted by the Neutrino Scattering Theory Experiment Collaboration (NuSTEC), we provide input on the synergies between theoretical and experimental efforts that can provide critical input to the prediction accuracy needed for the forthcoming high-precision neutrino measurements. These efforts involve a wide range of energies and interaction processes, as well as target nuclei and interaction probes. The challenges discussed will be overcome only through the active support of integrated collaboration across strong and electroweak physics from both the nuclear and high energy physics communities.

New Clues About Light Sterile Neutrinos: Preference for Models with Damping Effects in Global Fits

This article reports global fits of short-baseline neutrino data to oscillation models involving light sterile neutrinos. In the commonly-used 3+1 plane wave model, there is a well-known 4.9$σ$ tension between data sets sensitive to appearance versus disappearance of neutrinos. We find that models that damp the oscillation prediction for the reactor data sets, especially at low energy, substantially improve the fits and reduce the tension. We consider two such scenarios. The first scenario introduces the quantum mechanical wavepacket effect that accounts for the source size in reactor experiments into the 3+1 model. We find that inclusion of the wavepacket effect greatly improves the overall fit compared to a 3$ν$ model by $Δχ^2/$DOF$=61.1/4$ ($7.1σ$ improvement) with best-fit $Δm^2=1.4$ eV$^2$ and wavepacket length of 67fm. The internal tension is reduced to 3.4$σ$. If reactor-data only is fit, then the wavepacket preferred length is 91 fm ($>20$ fm at 99\% CL). The second model introduces oscillations involving sterile flavor and allows the decay of the heaviest, mostly sterile mass state, $ν_4$. This model introduces a damping term similar to the wavepacket effect, but across all experiments. Compared to a three-neutrino fit, this has a $Δχ^2/$DOF$=60.6/4$ ($7σ$ improvement) with preferred $Δm^2=1.4$ eV$^2$ and decay $Γ= 0.35$ eV$^2$. The internal tension is reduced to 3.7$σ$. For many years, the reactor event rates have been observed to have structure that deviates from prediction. Community discussion has focused on an excess compared to prediction observed at 5 MeV; however, other deviations are apparent. This structure has $L$ dependence that is well-fit by the damped models. Before assuming this points to new physics, we urge closer examination of systematic effects that could lead to this $L$ dependence.

MicroBooNE and the $ν_e$ Interpretation of the MiniBooNE Low-Energy Excess

A new generation of neutrino experiments is testing the $4.8σ$ anomalous excess of electron-like events observed in MiniBooNE. This is of huge importance for particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, not only because of the potential discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model, but also because the lessons we will learn about neutrino-nucleus interactions will be crucial for the worldwide neutrino program. MicroBooNE has recently released results that appear to disfavor several explanations of the MiniBooNE anomaly. Here, we show quantitatively that MicroBooNE results, while a promising start, unquestionably do not probe the full parameter space of sterile neutrino models hinted at by MiniBooNE and other data, nor do they probe the $ν_e$ interpretation of the MiniBooNE excess in a model-independent way. Our analysis code is fully available in https://github.com/Harvard-Neutrino/MicroBooNE-analysis-2021.

The physics potential of a reactor neutrino experiment with Skipper-CCDs: Searching for new physics with light mediators

We explore the sensitivity to new physics of the recently proposed vIOLETA experiment: a 10 kg Skipper Charged Coupled Device detector deployed 12 meters away from a commercial nuclear reactor core. We investigate two broad classes of models which benefit from the very low energy recoil threshold of these detectors, namely neutrino magnetic moments and light mediators coupled to neutrinos and quarks or electrons. We find that this experimental setup is very sensitive to light, weakly coupled new physics, and in particular that it could probe potential explanations of the event excess observed in XENON1T. We also provide a detailed study on the dependence of the sensitivity on the experimental setup assumptions and on the neutrino flux systematic uncertainties.

Proceedings of The Magnificent CE$ν$NS Workshop 2018

The Magnificent CE$ν$NS Workshop (2018) was held November 2 & 3 of 2018 on the University of Chicago campus and brought together theorists, phenomenologists, and experimentalists working in numerous areas but sharing a common interest in the process of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS). This is a collection of abstract-like summaries of the talks given at the meeting, including links to the slides presented. This document and the slides from the meeting provide an overview of the field and a snapshot of the robust CE$ν$NS-related efforts both planned and underway.
