Combined tools for Particle-In-Cell simulations performed with transversely asymmetric chirped lasers

We introduce the Asymmetric Chirped Electric field reconstruction (ACE) toolbox, a suite of algorithms enabling the reconstruction of a laser transverse distribution coupled to a chirped temporal profile. This suite includes the implementation of the reconstructed distribution in Particle In-Cell simulations in cylindrical and Cartesian geometry. Under the assumption of negligible spatio-temporal couplings, the ACE toolbox extends a previously established method for realistic simulations of the transverse distribution by adding spectral chirping to the modal decomposition of the electric field. The relevance of the ACE toolbox is demonstrated through the modelling of a Laser Wakefield Acceleration experiment where the produced electron bunch was optimized via spectral chirping of the laser pulse.

Plasma dechirper and lens for electron beams from laser wakefield acceleration in a tailored density profile

Achieving high-quality electron beams from laser wakefield accelerators critically relies on density tailoring to control electron dynamics during injection, acceleration, and extraction. We report on the experimental observation of electron beam acceleration and shaping, in transverse momentum and longitudinal phase space, controlled by plasma density tailoring in a gas cell. Electron beams with a FWHM charge of 40 pC at an energy of 190 MeV, 3.4\% energy spread and an rms divergence of 0.46 mrad, corresponding to a transverse momentum spread of 0.2 $m_e c$, have been measured. These beams have a peak spectral brightness of up to 8 pC/MeV/mrad. Simulations using experimental parameters as input show that acceleration in the plasma plateau leads to chirped electron beams which then undergo transverse momentum spread reduction in a plasma down-ramp followed by dechirping in a 10~mm long plasma tail, leading to the measured peaked spectra. %\textcolor{blue}{A control experiment with and without the LPT confirms these results.} The comparison of experimental results with and without long plasma tail confirms this analysis.

Observation of laser plasma accelerated electrons with transverse momentum spread below the thermal level

Achieving high-quality electron beams from laser-plasma accelerators critically relies on density tailoring to control electron dynamics during injection, acceleration, and extraction. We report on the experimental observation of electron beam acceleration and 3D shaping, in transverse momentum and longitudinal phase space, controlled by plasma density tailoring in a gas cell. It leads to relativistic electron beams with a transverse momentum spread of 0.2 mec, below the thermal level imprinted by the process of ionization injection in a laser-driven wakefield accelerator. These beams have a charge of 40 pC at an energy of 190 MeV with 1.9% energy spread and an rms divergence of 0.54 mrad, resulting in single-peak spectra with a brightness of up to 8 pC/MeV/mrad. Using numerical simulations, we show that the decrease in transverse momentum spread starts in the downramp and continues in a 10 mm long plasma tail at the exit of the gas cell, where it is accompanied by energy dechirping.

Experimental characterisation of a single-shot spectrometer for high-flux, GeV-scale gamma-ray beams

We report on the first experimental characterisation of a gamma-ray spectrometer designed to spectrally resolve high-flux photon beams with energies in the GeV range. The spectrometer has been experimentally characterised using a bremsstrahlung source obtained at the Apollon laser facility during the interaction of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams (maximum energy of 1.7 GeV and overall charge of 207$\pm$62 pC) with a 1 mm thick tantalum target. Experimental data confirms the possibility of performing single-shot measurements, without the need for accumulation, with a high signal to noise ratio. Scaling the results to photons in the multi-GeV range suggests the possibility of achieving percent-level energy resolution, as required, for instance, by the next generation of experiments in strong-field quantum electrodynamics.

Mechanisms to control laser-plasma coupling in laser wakefield electron acceleration

Experimental results, supported by precise modelling, demonstrate optimisation of a plasma-based injector with intermediate laser pulse energy ($<1$ J), corresponding to a normalised vector potential $a_0 = 2.15$, using ionisation injection in a tailored plasma density profile. An increase in electron bunch quality and energy is achieved experimentally with the extension of the density downramp at the plasma exit. Optimisation of the focal position of the laser pulse in the tailored plasma density profile is shown to efficiently reduce electron bunch angular deviation, leading to a better alignment of the electron bunch with the laser axis. Single peak electron spectra are produced in a previously unexplored regime by combining an early focal position and adaptive optic control of the laser wavefront through optimising the symmetry of the pre-focal laser energy distribution. Experimental results have been validated through particle-in-cell simulations using realistic laser energy, phase distribution, and temporal envelope, allowing for accurate predictions of difficult to model parameters, such as total charge and spatial properties of the electron bunches, opening the way for more accurate modelling for the design of plasma-based accelerators.
