Role of Fluctuations in the Linear Sigma Model with Quarks

We study the thermodynamics of the linear sigma model with constituent quarks beyond the mean-field approximation. By integrating out the quark degrees of freedom we derive an effective action for the meson fields which is then linearized around the ground state including field fluctuations. We propose a new method for performing exact averaging of complicated functions over the meson field fluctuations. Both thermal and zero-point fluctuations are considered. The chiral condensate and the effective meson masses are determined self-consistently in a rigorous thermodynamic framework. At zero chemical potential the model predicts a chiral crossover transition which separates two distinct regimes: heavy quarks and light pions at low temperatures, but light quarks and heavy mesons at high temperatures. The crossover becomes a first order phase transition if the vacuum pion mass is reduced from its physical value.

Antibaryons bound in nuclei

We study the possibility of producing a new kind of nuclear systems which in addition to ordinary nucleons contain a few antibaryons (antiproton, antilambda, etc.). The properties of such systems are described within the relativistic mean-field model by employing G-parity transformed interactions for antibaryons. Calculations are first done for infinite systems and then for finite nuclei from He to Pb. It is demonstrated that the presence of a real antibaryon leads to a strong rearrangement of a target nucleus resulting in a significant increase of its binding energy and local compression. Noticeable effects remain even after the antibaryon coupling constants are reduced by factor 3-4 compared to G-parity motivated values. We have performed detailed calculations of the antibaryon annihilation rates in the nuclear environment by applying a kinetic approach. It is shown that due to significant reduction of the reaction Q-values, the in-medium annihilation rates should be strongly suppressed leading to relatively long-lived antibaryon-nucleus systems. Multi-nucleon annihilation channels are analyzed too. We have also estimated formation probabilities of bound antibaryon-nucleus systems in antiproton-nucleus reactions and have found that their observation will be feasible at the future GSI antiproton facility. Several observable signatures are proposed. The possibility of producing multi-quark-antiquark clusters is discussed.

Formation of hot heavy nuclei in supernova explosions

We point out that during the supernova II type explosion the thermodynamical condition of stellar matter between the protoneutron star and the shock front corresponds to the nuclear liquid-gas phase coexistence region, which can be investigated in nuclear multifragmentation reactions. We have demonstrated, that neutron-rich hot heavy nuclei can be produced in this region. The production of these nuclei may influence dynamics of the explosion and contribute to the synthesis of heavy elements.

Clusters of matter and antimatter

In this talk I first give a short overview of antinuclei production in recent experiments at RHIC. Then I discuss the possibility of producing new types of nuclear systems by implanting an antibaryon into ordinary nuclei. The structure of nuclei containing one antiproton or antilambda is investigated within the framework of a relativistic mean-field model. Self-consistent calculations predict an enhanced binding and considerable compression in such systems as compared with normal nuclei. I present arguments that the life time of such nuclei with respect to the antibaryon annihilation might be long enough for their observation. Few experimental signatures are suggested. Possible formation of multi-quark-antiquark clusters is also discussed.

Entropy puzzle in small exploding systems

We use a simple hard-core gas model to study the dynamics of small exploding systems. The system is initially prepared in a thermalized state in a spherical container and then allowed to expand freely into the vacuum. We follow the expansion dynamics by recording the coordinates and velocities of all particles until their last collision points (freeze-out). We have found that the entropy per particle calculated for the ensemble of freeze-out points is very close to the initial value. This is in apparent contradiction with the Joule experiment in which the entropy grows when the gas expands irreversibly into a larger volume.

How far is normal nuclear matter from the chiral symmetry restoration?

Properties of cold nuclear matter are studied within a generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model formulated on the level of constituent nucleons. The model parameters are chosen to reproduce simultaneously the observed nucleon and pion masses in vacuum as well as saturation properties of nuclear matter. The strongest constraints on these parameters are given by the empirical values of the nucleon effective mass and compression modulus at nuclear saturation density. A preferable value of the cut-off momentum, determining density of active quasinucleon states in the Dirac sea, is estimated to about 400 MeV/c. With the most reasonable choice of model parameters we have found a first order phase transition of the liquid-gas type at subsaturation densities and the gradual restoration of chiral symmetry at about 3 times the saturation density. Fluctuations of the scalar condensate around its mean-field value are estimated and shown to be large in the vicinity of chiral transition.

Catastrophic rearrangement of a compact star due to the quark core formation

We study properties of compact stars with the deconfinement phase transition in their interiors. The equation of state of cold baryon-rich matter is constructed by combining a relativistic mean-field model for the hadronic phase and the MIT Bag model for the deconfined phase. In a narrow parameter range two sequences of compact stars (twin stars), which differ by the size of the quark core, have been found. We demonstrate the possibility of a rapid transition between the twin stars with the energy release of about $10^{52}$ ergs. This transition should be accompanied by the prompt neutrino burst and the delayed gamma-ray burst.

Enhanced binding and cold compression of nuclei due to admixture of antibaryons

We discuss the possibility of producing a new kind of nuclear system by putting a few antibaryons inside ordinary nuclei. The structure of such systems is calculated within the relativistic mean--field model assuming that the nucleon and antinucleon potentials are related by the G-parity transformation. The presence of antinucleons leads to decreasing vector potential and increasing scalar potential for the nucleons. As a result, a strongly bound system of high density is formed. Due to the significant reduction of the available phase space the annihilation probability might be strongly suppressed in such systems.

Constraints on possible phase transitions above the nuclear saturation density

We compare different models for hadronic and quark phases of cold baryon-rich matter in an attempt to find a deconfinement phase transition between them. For the hadronic phase we consider Walecka-type mean-field models which describe well the nuclear saturation properties. We also use the variational chain model which takes into account correlation effects. For the quark phase we consider the MIT bag model, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and the massive quasiparticle models. By comparing pressure as a function of baryon chemical potential we find that crossings of hadronic and quark branches are possible only in some exceptional cases while for most realistic parameter sets these branches do not cross at all. Moreover, the chiral phase transition, often discussed within the framework of QCD motivated models, lies in the region where the quark phases are unstable with respect to the hadronic phase. We discuss possible physical consequences of these findings.

On pressure versus density dependence in statistical multifragmentation models

We show that the statistical multifragmentation model with the standard parameterization of the free volume predicts a constant pressure as density approaches the normal nuclear density. This is contrary to the Raduta&Raduta result obtained by disregarding the center of mass constraint. It is demonstrated that in finite nuclear systems the partitions with small number of fragments play an important role.

Collective Deceleration of Ultrarelativistic Nuclei and Creation of Quark-Gluon Plasma

We propose a unified space-time picture of baryon stopping and quark-gluon plasma creation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is assumed that the highly Lorentz contracted nuclei are decelerated by the coherent color field which is formed between them after they pass through each other. This process continues until the field is neutralized by the Schwinger mechanism. Conservation of energy and momentum allow us to calculate the energy losses of the nuclear slabs and the initial energy density of the quark-gluon plasma.

Influence of irradiation on the space-time structure of shock waves

The long-range energy deposition by heavy-ion beams makes new types of shock wave experiments possible in the laboratory. We have investigated a situation that is of relevance to supernova dynamics in astrophysics, where a shock wave is irradiated by a flux of neutrinos depositing energy throughout the shock wave and surrounding matter, thus changing the behaviour of the running shock. We have carried out fluid-dynamical simulations to study generic features of stimulated shock waves. First we consider an idealized case assuming uniform energy deposition into a planar shock wave propagating through an ideal gas. Then we investigate more realistic situations realizable in laboratory experiments with heavy-ion beams. We have found that energy deposition leads to two important effects: acceleration of the shock front and decay of the shock strength. The possibility of laboratory experiments is briefly discussed.

Mutual heavy ion dissociation in peripheral collisions at ultrarelativistic energies

We study mutual dissociation of heavy nuclei in peripheral collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. Earlier this process was proposed for beam luminosity monitoring via simultaneous registration of forward and backward neutrons in zero degree calorimeters at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Electromagnetic dissociation of heavy ions is considered in the framework of the Weizsacker-Williams method and simulated by the RELDIS code. Photoneutron cross sections measured in different experiments and calculated by the GNASH code are used as input for the calculations of dissociation cross sections. The difference in results obtained with different inputs provides a realistic estimation for the systematic uncertainty of the luminosity monitoring method. Contribution to simultaneous neutron emission due to grazing nuclear interactions is calculated within the abrasion model. Good description of CERN SPS experimental data on Au and Pb dissociation gives confidence in predictive power of the model for AuAu and PbPb collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Statistical Multifragmentation in Thermodynamical Limit: An Exact Solution for Phase Transitions

An exact analytical solution of the statistical multifragmentation model is found in thermodynamic limit. Excluded volume effects are taken into account in the thermodynamically self-consistent way. The model exhibits a 1-st order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. An extension of the model including the Fisher's term is also studied. The possibility of the second order phase transition at or above the critical point is discussed. The mixed phase region of the phase diagram, where the gas of nuclear fragments coexists with the infinite liquid condensate, is unambiguously identified. The peculiar thermodynamic properties of the model near the boundary between the mixed phase and the pure gaseous phase are studied. The results for the caloric curve and specific heat are presented and a physical picture of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is clarified.

Strange quark stars within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We investigate the properties of charge-neutral $β$-equilibrium cold quark matter within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The calculations are carried out for different ratios of coupling constants characterizing the vector and scalar 4-fermion interaction, $ξ\equiv G_V/G_S$. It is shown that for $ξ< 0.4$ matter is self-bound and for $ξ< 0.65$ it has a first order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. The Gibbs conditions in the mixed phase are applied for the case of two chemical potentials associated with the baryon number and electric charge. The characteristics of the quark stars are calculated for $ξ= 0, 0.5$ and 1. It is found that the phase transition leads to a strong density variation at the surface of these stars. For $ξ= 1$ the properties of quark stars show behaviors typical for neutron stars. At $ξ\goo 0.4$ the stars near to the maximum mass have a large admixture of strange quarks in their interiors.

Statistical evolution of isotope composition of nuclear fragments

Calculations within the statistical multifragmentation model show that the neutron content of intermediate mass fragments can increase in the region of liquid-gas phase transition in finite nuclei. The model predicts also inhomogeneous distributions of fragments and their isospin in the freeze-out volume caused by an angular momentum and external long-range Coulomb field. These effects can take place in peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies and lead to neutron-rich isotopes produced in the midrapidity kinematic region.
