Exchange constants in molecule-based magnets derived from density functional methods

Cu(pyz)(NO3)2 is a quasi one-dimensional molecular antiferromagnet that exhibits three dimensional long-range magnetic order below TN=110 mK due to the presence of weak inter-chain exchange couplings. Here we compare calculations of the three largest exchange coupling constants in this system using two techniques based on plane-wave basis-set density functional theory: (i) a dimer fragment approach and (ii) an approach using periodic boundary conditions. The calculated values of the large intrachain coupling constant are found to be consistent with experiment, showing the expected level of variation between different techniques and implementations. However, the interchain coupling constants are found to be smaller than the current limits on the resolution of the calculations. This is due to the computational limitations on convergence of absolute energy differences with respect to basis set, which are larger than the inter-chain couplings themselves. Our results imply that errors resulting from such limitations are inherent in the evaluation of small exchange constants in systems of this sort, and that many previously reported results should therefore be treated with caution.

Transverse field muon-spin rotation measurement of the topological anomaly in a thin film of MnSi

We present the results of transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements on an epitaxially grown 40 nm-thick film of MnSi on Si(111) in the region of the field-temperature phase diagram where a skyrmion phase has been observed in the bulk. We identify changes in the quasistatic magnetic field distribution sampled by the muon, along with evidence for magnetic transitions around $T\approx 40$ K and 30 K. Our results suggest that the cone phase is not the only magnetic texture realized in film samples for out-of-plane fields.

Muon-spin relaxation study of the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$)

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

Transverse field muon-spin rotation signature of the skyrmion lattice phase in Cu2OSeO3

We present the results of transverse field (TF) muon-spin rotation (muSR) measurements on Cu2OSeO3, which has a skyrmion lattice (SL) phase. We measure the response of the TF muSR signal in that phase along with the surrounding ones, and suggest how the phases might be distinguished using the results of these measurements. Dipole field simulations support the conclusion that the muon is sensitive to the SL via the TF lineshape and, based on this interpretation, our measurements suggest that the SL is quasistatic on a timescale tau > 100 ns.

Comment on Multiple Quantum Oscillations in the de Haas - van Alphen Spectra of the Underdoped High-Temperature Superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.5 (A. Audouard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 (2009) 157003)

Recent observations of slow magneto-oscillations in some underdoped cuprate superconductors are one of the most striking discoveries in the field of superconductivity since many probes of underdoped cuprates clearly point to a non Fermi-liquid normal state. We show that a large magnitude and strong magnetic-field dependence of the residual resistance invalidate the conventional interpretation of the magneto-oscillations as a normal-state dHvA effect. We propose that the oscillations are most likely caused by a quantum interference of vortex and crystal lattice modulations of the order parameter in the mixed superconducting state.

Zero-temperature phase transitions in dilute bosonic superfluids on a lattice

Kinetic energy driven phase transitions in Bose superfluids occur at low values of the repulsion when the values of the next-to-nearest and next-to-next-to-nearest hopping term attain certain critical values, resulting in alterations in the wave vector of the condensate. We map out the space of possible phases allowed by particular forms of the single-particle energy dispersion in the superfluid state, noting the appearance of a new phase, and examine in more detail the effects of additional repulsive terms on the form of the condensate wavefunction. We also examine the effect of these additional hopping terms on the formation of inhomogeneities in the condensate.

Kinetic quantum phase transition in bosonic superfluids on a lattice

It has been well known that quantum fluctuations induce a macroscopic phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator phase driven by the repulsive potential energy in the ground state of dense bosonic systems on a lattice. We find a quantum phase transition from the homogeneous to an inhomogeneous Bose-condensate strongly affected or sometimes driven by the kinetic energy dispersion in dilute bosonic superfluids, which provides a clear identification of the superfluid state.

The Shubnikov-de Haas effect in multiband quasi-two dimensional metals

We analyze the behavior of the longitudinal conductivity $σ_{zz}$ in a field perpendicular to the highly conducting plane of a quasi-2D {\em multiband} metal in the case of closed system and open systems where $τ$ is fixed, $τ$ oscillates due to intra-band scattering and $τ$ oscillates due to inter-band scattering. In all but one case, we find that there are also mixing frequencies present -- however they exhibit different qualitative behaviors, as befits their different origins, and in the case of inter-band scattering in an opensystem, may in fact be absent in the dHvA oscillations of that system.

Interplay of size and Landau quantizations in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of metallic nanowires

We examine the interplay between size quantization and Landau quantization in the De Haas-Van Alphen oscillations of clean, metallic nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field for `hard' boundary conditions, i.e. those of an infinite round well, as opposed to the `soft' parabolically confined boundary conditions previously treated in Alexandrov and Kabanov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 076601 (2005) (AK)). We find that there exist {\em two} fundamental frequencies as opposed to the one found in bulk systems and the three frequencies found by AK with soft boundary counditions. In addition, we find that the additional `magic resonances' of AK may be also observed in the infinite well case, though they are now damped. We also compare the numerically generated energy spectrum of the infinite well potential with that of our analytic approximation, and compare calculations of the oscillatory portions of the thermodynamic quantities for both models.
