Entropy-production fluctuation theorem for a generalized Langevin particle in crossed electric and magnetic fields

We study fluctuations of entropy production for a charged Brownian particle confined in a harmonic trap and driven out of equilibrium by crossed electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic field is constant and perpendicular to the plane of motion, while the electric field is time dependent and provides the driving. The non-Markovian dynamics is modeled by a generalized Langevin equation with memory and Gaussian noise. This setting represents a charged Brownian degree of freedom in a structured bath, where delayed friction modifies relaxation while the magnetic field couples the transverse coordinates. Using the exact solution of this linear dynamics, we obtain the time-dependent Gaussian phase-space probability density and from it compute the trajectory-dependent total entropy production. For two solvable driving protocols -- direct forcing by a prescribed time-dependent electric force and dragging of the harmonic trap center -- we prove analytically that the total entropy production obeys a detailed fluctuation theorem.

A forced thermal ratchet in a memory heat bath

The present work studies a non-Markovian forced thermal ratchet model on an asymmetric periodic potential. The Brownian dynamics is described by a generalized Langevin equation with an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type friction memory kernel. We show that for the case of a time-dependent driving force, also in the form of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-like process, an exact expression of the probability current can be derived. We also obtain the behavior of the particle's average rate of flow as a function of the external amplitude force and of the bath temperature when the driving force behaves as a square wave modulation. All our results are compared with those obtained in the Markovian case and we find, fairly remarkably, that in some cases a friction memory kernel results in an enhancement of the current

An experimental setup to generate narrowband bi-photons via four-wave mixing in cold atoms

We present our recently-built experimental setup designed to generate near-infrared and narrow-band correlated photon pairs by inducing four-wave mixing in a cold gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap. The experimental setup and its automation and control approach are described in detail. A characterization of the optical density of the atomic ensemble as well as the basic statistical measurements of the generated light are reported. The non-classical nature of the photons pairs is confirmed by observing a violation of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality by a factor of 5.6 $\times 10^5$ in a Hanbury Brown - Twiss interferometer. A $1/e$ coherence time for the heralded, idler photons of $4.4 \pm 0.1$ ns is estimated from our observations. We are able to achieve a value of $10^{4}$ s$^{-1}$ pair-detection-rate, which results in a spectral brightness of 280 (MHz s)$^{-1}$. The combination of high brightness and narrow-band spectrum makes this photon-pair source a viable tool in fundamental studies of quantum states and opens the door to use them in quantum technologies.

The two-spinon transverse structure factor of the gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

We consider the transverse dynamical structure factor of the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain (XXZ model) in the gapped antiferromagnetic regime ($Δ> 1$). Specializing to the case of zero field, we use two independent approaches based on integrability (one valid for finite size, the other for the infinite lattice) to obtain the exact two-spinon part of this correlator. We discuss in particular its asymmetry with respect to the $π/2$ momentum line, its overall anisotropy dependence, and its contribution to sum rules.

Dynamical replica analysis of disordered Ising spin systems on finitely connected random graphs

We study the dynamics of macroscopic observables such as the magnetization and the energy per degree of freedom in Ising spin models on random graphs of finite connectivity, with random bonds and/or heterogeneous degree distributions. To do so we generalize existing implementations of dynamical replica theory and cavity field techniques to systems with strongly disordered and locally tree-like interactions. We illustrate our results via application to the dynamics of e.g. $\pm J$ spin-glasses on random graphs and of the overlap in finite connectivity Sourlas codes. All results are tested against Monte Carlo simulations.

Analytic solution of attractor neural networks on scale-free graphs

We study the influence of network topology on retrieval properties of recurrent neural networks, using replica techniques for diluted systems. The theory is presented for a network with an arbitrary degree distribution $p(k)$ and applied to power law distributions $p(k) \sim k^{-γ}$, i.e. to neural networks on scale-free graphs. A bifurcation analysis identifies phase boundaries between the paramagnetic phase and either a retrieval phase or a spin glass phase. Using a population dynamics algorithm, the retrieval overlap and spin glass order parameters may be calculated throughout the phase diagram. It is shown that there is an enhancement of the retrieval properties compared with a Poissonian random graph. We compare our findings with simulations.

Typical properties of large random economies with linear activities

We study the competitive equilibrium of large random economies with linear activities using methods of statistical mechanics. We focus on economies with $C$ commodities, $N$ firms, each running a randomly drawn linear technology, and one consumer. We derive, in the limit $N,C\to\infty$ with $n=N/C$ fixed, a complete description of the statistical properties of typical equilibria. We find two regimes, which in the limit of efficient technologies are separated by a phase transition, and argue that endogenous technological change drives the economy close to the critical point.

The Little-Hopfield model on a Random Graph

We study the Hopfield model on a random graph in scaling regimes where the average number of connections per neuron is a finite number and where the spin dynamics is governed by a synchronous execution of the microscopic update rule (Little-Hopfield model). We solve this model within replica symmetry and by using bifurcation analysis we prove that the spin-glass/paramagnetic and the retrieval/paramagnetictransition lines of our phase diagram are identical to those of sequential dynamics. The first-order retrieval/spin-glass transition line follows by direct evaluation of our observables using population dynamics. Within the accuracy of numerical precision and for sufficiently small values of the connectivity parameter we find that this line coincides with the corresponding sequential one. Comparison with simulation experiments shows excellent agreement.
