Production of spin-3 mesons in diffractive DIS

Non-trivial spin effects do not die out with energy growth. Here, we discuss one example of such effects -- production of spin-3 mesons in diffractive DIS. Using both explicit k_t-factorization calculations and their vector-dominance-model interpretation, we argue that diffractive production of rho_3(1690) is a unique probe of several novel aspects of diffraction.

Minkowski space structure of the Higgs potential in 2HDM: II. Minima, symmetries, and topology

We continue to explore the consequences of the recently discovered Minkowski space structure of the Higgs potential in the two-Higgs-doublet model. Here, we focus on the vacuum properties. The search for extrema of the Higgs potential is reformulated in terms of 3-quadrics in the 3+1-dimensional Minkowski space. We prove that 2HDM cannot have more than two local minima in the orbit space and that a twice-degenerate minimum can arise only via spontaneous violation of a discrete symmetry of the Higgs potential. Investigating topology of the 3-quadrics, we give concise criteria for existence of non-contractible paths in the Higgs orbit space. We also study explicit symmetries of the Higgs potential/lagrangian and their spontaneous violation from a wider perspective than usual.

Minkowski space structure of the Higgs potential in 2HDM

The Higgs potential of 2HDM keeps its generic form under the group of transformation GL(2,C), which is larger than the usually considered reparametrization group U(2). This reparametrization symmetry induces the Minkowski space structure in the orbit space of 2HDM. Exploiting this property, we present a geometric analysis of the number and properties of stationary points of the most general 2HDM potential. In particular, we prove that charge-breaking and neutral vacua never coexist in 2HDM and establish conditions when the most general explicitly CP-conserving Higgs potential has spontaneously CP-violating minima. Our analysis avoids manipulation with high-order algebraic equations.

Can 2HDM support fermion-stabilized bubbles of false vacuum?

The Higgs potential of the two-Higgs-doublet model can have several minima with different properties. We discuss a possibility that a heavy fermion, if trapped in a microscopic false vacuum bubble, might become light enough to prevent the bubble from the collapse.

Corrections to the generalized vector dominance due to diffractive rho_3 production

The idea of the vector dominance is still in use in various analyses of experimental data of photon-hadron reactions. It makes sense, therefore, to recast results of microscopic calculations of such reactions in this language. Here we present the diffractive DIS $ρ_3$ production as a specific correction to the generalized vector dominance. We perform a coupled channel analysis of spin-orbital excitations in diffractive photoproduction and reiterate the point that rho_3 in diffractive DIS will be sensitive to a novel aspect of diffraction.

Two-Higgs-doublet model from the group-theoretic perspective

In the two-Higgs-doublet model, different Higgs doublets can be viewed as components of a generic "hyperspinor". We decompose the Higgs potential of this model into irreducible representations of the SU(2) group of transformations of this hyperspinor. We discuss invariant combinations of the Higgs potential parameters lambda_i that arise in this decomposition and provide simple and concise sets of conditions for the hidden Z_2-symmetry, Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and explicit CP-conservation in 2HDM. We show that some results obtained previously by brute-force calculations are reduced to simple linear algebraic statements in our approach.

Tree-level unitarity constraints in the most general 2HDM

We obtain tree-level unitarity constraints for the most general Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with explicit CP-violation. We briefly discuss correspondence between possible violation of tree level unitarity limitation and physical content of the theory.

How to measure the Pomeron phase in diffractive dipion photoproduction

The study of charge asymmetry of pions in the high-energy process gamma p -> pi+ pi- p (e p -> e pi+ pi- p) at very small dipion momenta offers a method to measure the phase of the forward hadronic (quasi)elastic amplitude gamma p -> rho p. We estimate potential of such measurements at HERA.

Production of spin-3 mesons in diffractive DIS

We calculate the amplitudes of J^{PC}=3^{--} meson production in diffractive DIS within the k_t-factorization approach, with a particular attention paid to the rho_3(1690) meson. We find that at all Q^2 the rho_3(1690) production cross section is 2-5 times smaller than the rho(1700) production cross section, which is assumed to be a pure D-wave state. Studying sigma_L and sigma_T separately, we observe domination of rho_3 in sigma_L and domination of rho(1700) in sigma_T and offer an explanation of this behavior in simple terms. We also find very strong contributions -- sometimes even domination -- of the s-channel helicity violating amplitudes. The typical color dipole sizes probed in rho_3 production are shown to be larger than those in the ground state rho production, and the energy dependence of rho_3 cross section turns out to be much flatter than the rho production cross section. All the conclusions about the relative behavior of rho_3(1690) and rho(1700) mesons are numerically stable against variations of input parameters.

Production of orbitally excited vector mesons in diffractive DIS

Within the k_t-factorization framework, we study diffractive production of orbitally excited vector mesons and compare it with the production of radial excitations, focusing on the rho(1450)/rho(1700) case. At small Q^2, orbital excitation of light quarkonia is found to dominate over radial excitations in diffractive production. We predict strong suppression of the production of orbital excitations by longitudinal photons, which leads to very small sigma_L/sigma_T ratio. At small Q^2, the s-channel helicity violating transitions contribute \sim 10-15% of the transverse cross section and \sim 50% of the longitudinal cross section. We also study mixing between radial and orbital excitations and determine strategies towards clarification of S-wave/D-wave assignment to rho(1450) and rho(1700) mesons. The results are compared with the experimental data available, and predictions for future experiments are given.

Tree-level unitarity constraints in the 2HDM with CP-violation

We obtain tree-level unitarity constraints for the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with explicit CP-violation. We limit ourselves to the case with soft violation of the discrete Z_2 symmetry of theory. The key role is played by the rephasing invariance of the 2HDM lagrangian. Our simple approach for derivation of these constraints can be easily transferred to other forms of Higgs sector. We briefly discuss correspondence between possible violation of tree level unitarity limitation and physical content of theory.

Impact of saturation on s-channel helicity nonconservation for diffractive vector mesons

As Glauber has shown in 1959, the spin-flip phenomena caused by the conventional spin-orbit interaction do vanish in the scattering off heavy, strongly absorbing nuclei. On the other hand, the origin of the s-channel helicity nonconservation (SCHNC) in diffractive DIS is of the origin different from simple spin-orbit interaction, and here we demonstrate that SCHNC in vector meson production survives strong absorption effects in nuclear targets. The intranuclear absorption often discussed in terms of the saturation effects introduces a new large scale $Q_A^2$ into the calculation of diffractive vector meson production amplitudes. Based on the color dipole approach, we show how the impact of the saturation scale $Q_A^2$ changes from the coherent to incoherent/quasifree diffractive vector mesons.

Ultraperipheral photoproduction of vector mesons in the nuclear Coulomb field and the size of neutral vector mesons

We point out a significance of ultraperipheral photoproduction of vector mesons in the Coulomb field of nuclei as a means of measuring the radius of the neutral vector meson. This new contribution to the production amplitude is very small compared to the conventional diffractive amplitude, but because of large impact parameters inherent to the ultraperipheral Coulomb mechanism its impact on the diffraction slope is substantial. We predict appreciable and strongly energy dependent increase of the diffraction slope towards very small momentum transfer. The magnitude of the effect is proportional to the mean radius squared of the vector meson and is within the reach of high precision photoproduction experiments, which gives a unique experimental handle on the size of vector mesons.

Lectures on Diffraction and Saturation of Nuclear Partons in DIS off Heavy Nuclei

The Lorentz contraction of ultrarelativistic nuclei entails a spatial overlap and fusion (recombination, saturation) of partons belonging to different nucleons at the same impact parameter. In these lectures we present a consistent description of the fusion of partons in terms of nuclear attenuation of color dipole states of the photon and collective Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) gluon structure function of a nucleus. The point that all observables for DIS off nuclei are uniquely calculable in terms of the nuclear WW glue amounts to a new form of factorization in the saturation regime. We start with the theory of multichannel propagation of color dipoles in a nuclear medium including the color-singlet to color-octet to color-octet transitions. We show how the Glauber-Gribov formulas are recovered from the multichannel formalism. Then we derive the two-plateau momentum distribution of final state (FS) quarks produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei in the saturation regime. Then we comment on the signatures of saturation in exclusive diffractive DIS. A large body of these lectures is on the recent theory of jet-jet inclusive cross sections. We show that for hard dijets the decorrelation momentum is of the order of the nuclear saturation momentum $Q_A$. For minijets with the transverse momentum below the saturation scale we predict a complete disappearance of the azimuthal jet-jet correlation. We conclude with comment on a possible relevance of the decorrelation of jets to the experimental data from the STAR-RHIC Collaboration.

Shrinkage vs. anti-shrinkage of the diffraction cone in the exclusive vector mesons production

We investigate the energy behavior of the diffraction cone in the exclusive vector meson production in diffractive DIS within the k_t-factorization approach. In our calculations, we make full use of fits to the unintegrated gluon structure functions extracted recently from experimental data on F_2p. Confirming early predictions, we observe that shrinkage of the diffraction cone due to the slope of the Pomeron trajectory is significantly compensated by the anti-shrinkage behavior of the gamma -> V transition. In order to match recent ZEUS data on the energy behavior of the diffraction slope, alpha^prime_eff(J/psi, exp.) = 0.115 +/- 0.018 (stat.) +0.008-0.015(syst.) GeV^-2, we had to use an input value alpha^\prime_Pomeron = 0.25 GeV^-2. We investigate the compensation effect in detail and give predictions for Q^2-dependence of the rate of cone shrinkage for different vector mesons.

The hard scale in the exclusive rho-meson production in diffractive DIS

We re-examine the issue of the pQCD factorization scale in the exclusive rho production in diffractive DIS from the k_t-factorization point of view. We find that this scale differs significantly from, and possesses much flatter Q^2 behavior than widely used value (Q^2 + m_ρ^2)/4. With these results in mind, we discuss the Q^2 shape of the rho meson production cross section. We introduce rescaled cross sections, which might provide further insight into the dynamics of rho production. We also comment on the recent ZEUS observation of energy-independent ratio sigma(gamma* p --> rho p) / sigma_{tot}(gamma*p).
