HST astrometry: the Galactic constant Theta_0/R_0

From multi-epoch WFPC2/HST observations we present astrometric measurements of the absolute motion of the bulge stars. The presence of an extragalactic point-source candidate allows us to measure the difference between the Oort constants, A-B = Theta_0/R_0. We find: Theta_0/R_0 = 27.4 +/- 1.8 km/s/kpc.

HST color-magnitude diagrams of 74 galactic globular clusters in the HST F439W and F555W bands

We present the complete photometric database and the color-magnitude diagrams for 74 Galactic globular clusters observed with the HST/WFPC2 camera in the F439W and F555W bands. A detailed discussion of the various reduction steps is also presented, and of the procedures to transform instrumental magnitudes into both the HST F439W and F555W flight system and the standard Johnson B and V systems. We also describe the artificial star experiments which have been performed to derive the star count completeness in all the relevant branches of the color magnitude diagram. The entire photometric database and the completeness function will be made available on the Web immediately after the publication of the present paper.

HST Observations of Galactic Globular Cluster Cores. II. NGC 6273 and the Problem of Horizontal-Branch Gaps

We present observations of the center of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6273, obtained with the HST/WFPC2 camera as part of the snapshot program GO-7470. A B, V color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for ~28,000 stars is presented and discussed. The most prominent feature of the CMD, identified for the first time in this paper, is the extended horizontal branch blue tail (EBT) with a clear double-peaked distribution and a significant gap. The EBT of NGC 6273 is compared with the EBTs of seven other globular clusters for which we have a CMD in the same photometric system. From this comparison we conclude that all the globular clusters in our sample with an EBT show at least one gap along the HB, which could have similar origins. A comparison with theoretical models suggests that at least some of these gaps may be occuring at a particular value of the stellar mass, common to a number of different clusters. From the CMD of NGC 6273 we obtain a distance modulus (m-M)_V=16.27+-0.20. We also estimate an average reddening E(B-V)=0.47+-0.03, though the CMD is strongly affected by differential reddening, with the relative reddening spanning a 0.2 magnitude interval in E(B-V) in the WFPC2 field. A luminosity function for the evolved stars in NGC 6273 is also presented and compared with the most recent evolutionary models.

Globular Clusters Color-Magnitude Diagrams with HST

In this paper we present the 13 B and V color-magnitude diagrams discussed by Piotto et al. in the same Procedings. The data have been collected with the WFPC2 camera on HST. We emphasize the discovery of blue horizontal branches in the two metal rich globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, and the four-mode HB of NGC 2808. The significance of the gaps in the HB of NGC 2808 is also assesed.

HST Observations of High-Density Globular Clusters

In this paper we present preliminary results from our HST project aimed at exploring the connection between the stellar dynamics and stellar evolution in the cores of high-density globular clusters. We illustrate the discovery of horizontal branches (HB) with extended blue tails in the very metal rich globular clusters NGC 6388 ([Fe/H]=-0.6) and NGC 6441 ([Fe/H]=-0.5), and of a four-mode horizontal branch in NGC 2808. We briefly summarize the possible causes of these anomalies, which might be a signature of mass-loss processes, subtle composition variations, or dynamical effects. The existence of blue HBs in metal rich clusters and of significant narrow gaps between clumps on the HB are a challenge for the theoretical models. The composite color-magnitude diagram and luminosity function of 878 blue stragglers in our sample of 13 galactic globular clusters are also presented and briefly discussed.

A Comparison of Deep HST Luminosity Functions of Four Globular Clusters

From deep color-magnitude arrays made from V and I images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 camera we have determined luminosity functions (LFs) down to a level that corresponds to about 0.13 solar masses, for the low-metal-abundance globular clusters M15, M30, M92, and NGC 6397. Because of the similarity of the metallicities of these clusters, differences in their luminosity functions directly trace differences in their mass functions. The LFs of M15, M30, and M92 agree closely over the entire observed range, whereas that of NGC 6397 drops away sharply at the faintest magnitudes. We suggest that the deficiency of low-mass stars in NGC 6397 is due to tidal shocks, to ejection through internal relaxation, or to a combination of the two. With the presently available mass-luminosity relations, we find that even in M15, M30, and M92 the mass functions probably do not rise so fast as to make the low-mass end dominant.
