Non-reciprocal coherent all-optical switching between magnetic multi-states

We present experimental and computational findings of the laser-induced non-reciprocal motion of magnetization during ultrafast photo-magnetic switching in garnets. We found distinct coherent magnetization precession trajectories and switching times between four magnetization states, depending on both directions of the light linear polarization and initial magnetic state. As a fingerprint of the topological symmetry, the choice of the switching trajectory is governed by an interplay of the photo-magnetic torque and magnetic anisotropy. Our results open a plethora of possibilities for designing energy-efficient magnetization switching routes at arbitrary energy landscapes.

Phononic Switching of Magnetization by the Ultrafast Barnett Effect

The Barnett effect, discovered more than a century ago, describes how an inertial body with otherwise zero net magnetic moment acquires spontaneous magnetization when mechanically spinning. Breakthrough experiments have recently shown that an ultrashort laser pulse destroys the magnetization of an ordered ferromagnet within hundreds of femtoseconds, with the spins losing angular momentum to circularly-polarized optical phonons as part of the ultrafast Einstein-de Haas effect. However, the prospect of using such high-frequency vibrations of the lattice to reciprocally switch magnetization in a nearby magnetic medium has not yet been experimentally explored. Here we show that the spontaneous magnetization temporarily gained via the ultrafast Barnett effect, through the resonant excitation of circularly-polarized optical phonons in paramagnetic substrates, can be used to permanently reverse the magnetic state of the substrate-mounted heterostructure. With the handedness of the phonons steering the direction of magnetic switching, the ultrafast Barnett effect offers a selective and potentially universal method for exercising ultrafast non-local control over magnetic order.

Nonlinear sub-switching regime of magnetization dynamics in photo-magnetic garnets

We analyze, both experimentally and numerically, the nonlinear regime of the photo-induced coherent magnetization dynamics in cobalt-doped yttrium iron garnet films. Photo-magnetic excitation with femtosecond laser pulses reveals a strongly nonlinear response of the spin subsystem with a significant increase of the effective Gilbert damping. By varying both laser fluence and the external magnetic field, we show that this nonlinearity originates in the anharmonicity of the magnetic energy landscape. We numerically map the parameter workspace for the nonlinear photo-induced spin dynamics below the photo-magnetic switching threshold. Corroborated by numerical simulations of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, our results highlight the key role of the cubic symmetry of the magnetic subsystem in reaching the nonlinear spin precession regime. These findings expand the fundamental understanding of laser-induced nonlinear spin dynamics as well as facilitate the development of applied photo-magnetism.

Spin transport-induced damping of coherent THz spin dynamics in iron

We study the damping of perpendicular standing spin-waves (PSSWs) in ultrathin Fe films at frequencies up to 2.4 THz. The PSSWs are excited by optically generated ultrashort spin current pulses, and probed optically in the time domain. Analyzing the wavenumber and thickness dependence of the damping, we demonstrate that at sufficiently large wave vectors $k$ the damping is dominated by spin transport effects scaling with k^4 and limiting the frequency range of observable PSSWs. Although this contribution is known to originate in the spin diffusion, we argue that at moderate and large k a more general description is necessary and develop a model where the 'transverse spin mean free path' is the a key parameter, and estimate it to be ~0.5 nm.

Magneto-optical properties of Au upon the injection of hot spin-polarized electrons across Fe/Au(001) interfaces

We demonstrate a novel method for the excitation of sizable magneto-optical effects in Au by means of the laser-induced injection of hot spin-polarized electrons in Au/Fe/MgO(001) heterostructures. It is based on the energy- and spin-dependent electron transmittance of Fe/Au interface which acts as a spin filter for non-thermalized electrons optically excited in Fe. We show that after crossing the interface, majority electrons propagate through the Au layer with the velocity on the order of 1 nm/fs (close to the Fermi velocity) and the decay length on the order of 100 nm. Featuring ultrafast functionality and requiring no strong external magnetic fields, spin injection results in a distinct magneto-optical response of Au. We develop a formalism based on the phase of the transient complex MOKE response and demonstrate its robustness in a plethora of experimental and theoretical MOKE studies on Au, including our ab initio calculations. Our work introduces a flexible tool to manipulate magneto-optical properties of metals on the femtosecond timescale that holds high potential for active magneto-photonics, plasmonics, and spintronics.

Femtosecond formation dynamics of the spin Seebeck effect revealed by terahertz spectroscopy

Understanding the transfer of spin angular momentum is essential in modern magnetism research. A model case is the generation of magnons in magnetic insulators by heating an adjacent metal film. Here, we reveal the initial steps of this spin Seebeck effect with <27fs time resolution using terahertz spectroscopy on bilayers of ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet and platinum. Upon exciting the metal with an infrared laser pulse, a spin Seebeck current $j_\textrm{s}$ arises on the same ~100fs time scale on which the metal electrons thermalize. This observation highlights that efficient spin transfer critically relies on carrier multiplication and is driven by conduction electrons scattering off the metal-insulator interface. Analytical modeling shows that the electrons' dynamics are almost instantaneously imprinted onto $j_\textrm{s}$ because their spins have a correlation time of only ~4fs and deflect the ferrimagnetic moments without inertia. Applications in material characterization, interface probing, spin-noise spectroscopy and terahertz spin pumping emerge.

Third-order Self-action Effects in Photonic Microcavities

Third-order nonlinear optical effects in photonic microcavities are studied. Significant light defocusing in the thin nonlinear microcavity spacer was observed. The polarization self-action effect was detected, when the large nonlinear polarization rotation angle arises when exciting the microcavity mode, being proportional to the radiation intensity.

Borrmann Effect in Photonic Crystals: Nonlinear Optical Consequences

Nonlinear-optical manifestations of the Borrmann effect that are consequences of the spectral dependence of the spatial distributions of the electromagnetic field in a structure are observed in one-dimensional photonic crystals. The spectrum of the light self-focusing effect corresponding to the propagation-matrix calculations has been measured near the edge of the photonic gap.
