Generation of continuous-variable cluster states of cylindrically polarized modes

Cluster states are an essential component in one-way quantum computation protocols. We present two schemes to generate addressable continuous-variable cluster states from quadrature squeezed cylindrically polarized modes. By including polarization in addition to the transverse spatial degree of freedom, elementary cluster states can be created in which four cluster nodes co-propagate within one paraxial vector beam. This approach is fundamentally compatible with existing time-multiplexed schemes that have been used to create the largest cluster states to date. We implement a proof-of-principle experiment of one of the proposed schemes and verify its feasibility by measuring the quantum correlations between the different nodes of the cluster state.

Orbital angular momentum from marginals of quadrature distributions

We set forth a method to analyze the orbital angular momentum of a light field. Instead of using the canonical formalism for the conjugate pair angle-angular momentum, we model this latter variable by the superposition of two independent harmonic oscillators along two orthogonal axes. By describing each oscillator by a standard Wigner function, we derive, via a consistent change of variables, a comprehensive picture of the orbital angular momentum. We compare with previous approaches and show how this method works in some relevant examples.

Nonlinear cross-Kerr quasiclassical dynamics

We study the quasiclassical dynamics of the cross-Kerr effect. In this approximation, the typical periodical revivals of the decorrelation between the two polarization modes disappear and they remain entangled. By mapping the dynamics onto the Poincare space, we find simple conditions for polarization squeezing. When dissipation is taken into account, the shape of the states in such a space is not considerably modified, but their size is reduced.

Orbital angular momentum in phase space

A comprehensive theory of the Weyl-Wigner formalism for the canonical pair angle-angular momentum is presented. Special attention is paid to the problems linked to rotational periodicity and angular-momentum discreteness.

Nondiffracting beams for vortex tomography

We propose a reconstruction of vortex beams based on the implementation of quadratic transformations in the orbital angular momentum. The information is encoded in a superposition of Bessel-like nondiffracting beams. The measurement of the angular probability distribution at different positions allows for the reconstruction of the Wigner function.

Angular performance measure for tighter uncertainty relations

The uncertainty principle places a fundamental limit on the accuracy with which we can measure conjugate physical quantities. However, the fluctuations of these variables can be assessed in terms of different estimators. We propose a new angular performance that allows for tighter uncertainty relations for angle and angular momentum. The differences with previous bounds can be significant for particular states and indeed may be amenable to experimental measurement with the present technology.

Non-negative Wigner functions for orbital angular momentum states

The Wigner function of a pure continuous-variable quantum state is non-negative if and only if the state is Gaussian. Here we show that for the canonical pair angle and angular momentum, the only pure states with non-negative Wigner functions are the eigenstates of the angular momentum. Some implications of this surprising result are discussed.

Full tomography from compatible measurements

We put forward a reconstruction scheme prompted by the relation between a von Neumann measurement and the corresponding informationally complete measurement induced in a relevant reconstruction subspace. This method is specially suited for the full tomography of complex quantum systems, where the intricacies of the detection part of the experiment can be greatly reduced provided some prior information is available. In broader terms this shows the importance of \sugg{this often-disregarded} prior information in quantum theory. The proposed technique is illustrated with an experimental tomography of photonic vortices of moderate dimension.

Full quantum reconstruction of vortex states

We propose a complete tomographic reconstruction of any vortex state carrying orbital angular momentum. The scheme determines the angular probability distribution of the state at different times under free evolution. To represent the quantum state we introduce a bona fide Wigner function defined on the discrete cylinder, which is the natural phase space for the pair angle-angular momentum. The feasibility of the proposal is addressed.

Wigner function for twisted photons

A comprehensive theory of the Weyl-Wigner formalism for the canonical pair angle-angular momentum is presented, with special emphasis in the implications of rotational periodicity and angular-momentum discreteness.
