A new path integral representation for the thermal partition function

The boundary conditions corresponding to the Matsubara formalism for the $T > 0$ partition function may be introduced as {\em constraints} in the path integral for the vacuum amplitude. We implement those constraints with time-independent Lagrange multipliers and, by integrating out the original fields, we obtain an alternative representation for the partition function, in terms of the Lagrange multipliers as dynamical fields. The resulting functional integral has the appealing property of involving only $d$-dimensional, {\em time independent} fields, and looks like a nonlocal version of the classical partition function. We develop this formalism within the context of the scalar and Dirac fields.

First-order phase transitions in superconducting films: A Euclidean model

In the context of the Ginzburg--Landau theory for critical phenomena, we consider the Euclidean $λϕ^4+ηϕ^6$ model bounded by two parallel planes, a distance $L$ separating them. This is supposed to describe a sample of a superconducting material undergoing a first-order phase transition. We are able to determine the dependence of the transition temperature $T_{c}$ for the system as a function of $L$. We show that $% T_{c}(L)$ is a concave function of $L$, in qualitative accordance with some experimental results. The form of this function is rather different from the corresponding one for a second-order transition.

Evolution of polymorphism and sympatric speciation through competition in a unimodal distribution of resources

A microscopic agent dynamical model for diploid age-structured populations is used to study evolution of polymorphism and sympatric speciation. The underlying ecology is represented by a unimodal distribution of resources of some width. Competition among individuals is also described by a similar distribution, and its strength is maximum for individuals with the same phenotype and decreases with distance in phenotype space as a gaussian, with some width. These two widths define the model's phase space, in which we identify the regions where an autonomous emergence of stable polymorphism or speciation is more likely.

Gauge fluctuations and transition temperature for superconducting wires

We consider the Ginzburg-Landau model, confined in an infinitely long rectangular wire of cross-section $L_{1}\times L_{2}$. Our approach is based on the Gaussian effective potential in the transverse unitarity gauge, which allows to treat gauge contributions in a compact form. The contributions from the scalar self-interaction and from the gauge fluctuations are clearly identified. Using techniques from dimensional and $zeta$-function regularizations, modified by the confinement conditions, we investigate the critical temperature for a wire of transverse dimensions $L_1$, $L_2$. Taking the mass term in the form $m_{0}^2=a(T/T_0 - 1)$, where $T_0$ is the bulk transition temperature, we obtain equations for the critical temperature as a function of the $L_{i}'s$ and of $T_{0}$, and determine the limiting sizes sustaining the transition. A qualitative comparison with some experimental observations is done.

Sharp gene pool transition in a population affected by phenotype-based selective hunting

We use a microscopic model of population dynamics, a modified version of the well known Penna model, to study some aspects of microevolution. This research is motivated by recent reports on the effect of selective hunting on the gene pool of bighorn sheep living in the Ram Mountain region, in Canada. Our model finds a sharp transition in the structure of the gene pool as some threshold for the number of animals hunted is reached.

Scaling properties of the Penna model

We investigate the scaling properties of the Penna model, which has become a popular tool for the study of population dynamics and evolutionary problems in recent years. We find that the model generates a normalised age distribution for which a simple scaling rule is proposed, that is able to reproduce qualitative features for all genome sizes.

Vacuum polarization in $d+{1/2}$ dimensions

We study the main properties of the one-loop vacuum polarization function ($Π_{αβ}$) for spinor $QED$ in `$d + {1/2}$ dimensions', i.e., with fields defined on ${\mathcal M} \subset {\mathbb R}^{d+1}$ such that ${\mathcal M} = \{(x_0,...,x_d) | x_{d}\geq 0 \}$, with bag-like boundary conditions on the boundary $\partial{\mathcal M} = \{(x_0,...,x_d) | x_{d}= 0 \}$. We obtain an exact expression for the induced current due to an external constant electric field normal to the boundary. We show that, for the particular case of 2+1 dimensions, there is a transverse component for the induced current, which is localized on a region close to $\partial{\mathcal M}$. This current is a parity breaking effect purely due to the boundary.

First-order phase transitions in confined systems

In a field-theoretical context, we consider the Euclidean $(ϕ^4+ϕ^6)_D$ model compactified in one of the spatial dimensions. We are able to determine the dependence of the transition temperature ($T_{c}$)for a system described by this model, confined between two parallel planes, as a function of the distance($L$) separating them. We show that $T_{c}$ is a concave function of $L^{-1}$. We determine a minimal separation below which the transition is suppressed.

A minimal size for granular superconductors

We investigate the minimal size of small superconducting grains by means of a Ginzburg-Landau model confined to a sphere of radius $R$. This model is supposed to describe a material in the form of a ball, whose transition temperature when presented in bulk form, $T_{0}$, is known. We obtain an equation for the critical temperature as a function of $R$ and of $T_{0}$, allowing us to arrive at the minimal radius of the sphere below which no superconducting transition exists.

Gauge Fluctuations in Superconducting Films

In this paper we consider a superconducting film modeled by the Ginzburg-Landau model, confined between two parallel planes a distance $L$ apart from one another. Our approach is based on the Gaussian effective potential in the transverse unitarity gauge, which allows to treat gauge contributions in a compact form. Using techniques from dimensional and $zeta$-function regularizations, modified by the confinement conditions, we investigate the critical temperature as a function of the film thickness $L$. The contributions from the scalar self-interaction and from the gauge fluctuations are clearly identified. The model suggests the existence of a minimal critical thickness below which superconductivity is suppressed.

Integrable open boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled XY spin chains

The integrable open-boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled one-dimensional XY spin chains are studied in the framework of the boundary quantum inverse scattering method. Three kinds of diagonal boundary K-matrices leading to nine classes of possible choices of boundary fields are found and the corresponding integrable boundary terms are presented explicitly. The boundary Hamiltonian is solved by using the coordinate Bethe ansatz technique and the Bethe ansatz equations are derived.

Quantum spin ladder systems associated with su(2|2)

Two integrable quantum spin ladder systems will be introduced associated with the fundamental su(2|2) solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. The first model is a generalized quantum Ising system with Ising rung interactions. In the second model the addition of extra interactions allows us to impose Heisenberg rung interactions without violating integrability. The existence of a Bethe ansatz solution for both models allows us to investigate the elementary excitations for antiferromagnetic rung couplings. We find that the first model does not show a gap whilst in the second case there is a gap for all positive values of the rung coupling.

Exact solution for the Bariev model with boundary fields

The Bariev model with open boundary conditions is introduced and analysed in detail in the framework of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. Two classes of independent boundary reflecting $K$-matrices leading to four different types of boundary fields are obtained by solving the reflection equations. The models are exactly solved by means of the algebraic nested Bethe ansatz method and the four sets of Bethe ansatz equations as well as their corresponding energy expressions are derived.

Integrable open supersymmetric U model with boundary impurity

An integrable version of the supersymmetric U model with open boundary conditions and an impurity situated at one end of the chain is introduced. The model is solved through the algebraic Bethe ansatz method and the Bethe ansatz equations are obtained.

The Quantum Algebraic Structure of the Twisted XXZ Chain

We consider the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method with a new R-matrix depending on two parameters $q$ and $t$. We find that the underlying algebraic structure is the two-parameter deformed algebra $SU_{q,t}(2)$ enlarged by introducing an element belonging to the centre. The corresponding Hamiltonian describes the spin-1/2 XXZ model with twisted periodic boundary conditions.
