Helicity in diffractive vector-meson production

We study the helicity amplitudes describing the quasielastic production of vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering within the context of the model which we previously introduced to describe the ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross sections. We calculate here a full set of spin flip (and non-flip) amplitudes and naturally find a significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation. We present predictions for the 15 spin-density matrix elements which completely define the angular distributions and the helicity properties of the produced meson.

The Transverse Cross Section in Exclusive Vector-Meson Production

We show that the ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal cross sections observed at HERA cannot be reproduced by models which assume that the meson can be described by an on-shell q qbar pair. We explain how a simple model allowing off-shell (anti)quarks can naturally lead to agreement with experiment.

Fermi Motion and Quark Off-Shellness in Elastic Vector-Meson Production

We study ways of implementing Fermi momentum in elastic vector-meson production, and find that the usual on-shell assumption of quark models and quark wave functions cannot reproduce the ratio of the longitudinal cross section to the transverse one. We propose a new approach which allows the quarks to be off-shell, and which naturally reproduces the data. As a consequence, we prove that the asymptotic form of the transverse cross section is different from 1/Q^8. In this new model, we show that the mass, t and Q2 dependence of the cross sections are also reproduced. We also make predictions concerning the production of excited states such as the rho' and the psi'.

A Low-Nussinov Model for gamma* p -> V p

We show that the lowest-order QCD calculation in a simple model of elastic vector-meson production does reproduce correctly the ratios of cross sections for rho, phi and J/psi (measured by H1 and ZEUS), both in photoproduction and in high-Q^2 quasi-elastic scattering. The mass and Q^2 dependence of the cross sections is reproduced as well. We also examine the lower-energy data, and see that the energy dependence of the cross section does not depend on Q^2, and that a comparison with rho and phi data from NMC suggests a soft pomeron intercept.

Vector Meson Production at HERA

We show that the lowest-order QCD calculation in a simple model of elastic vector-meson production does reproduce correctly the ratios of cross sections for rho, phi and J/psi, both in photoproduction and in high-Q2 quasi-elastic scattering. The dependence of the slopes on the mass of the vector meson is reproduced as well. We examine the lower-energy data, and find that the energy dependence of the cross section does not depend on Q2, but may depend on the vector-meson mass.
