Gate-tunable Memristive Phenonmena Mediated by Grain Boundaries in Single Layer MoS2

Continued progress in high speed computing depends on breakthroughs in both materials synthesis and device architectures. The performance of logic and memory can be enhanced significantly by introducing a memristor, a two terminal device with internal resistance that depends on the history of the external bias voltage. State of the art memristors, based on metal insulator metal (MIM) structures with insulating oxides, such as TiO2, are limited by a lack of control over the filament formation and external control of the switching voltage. Here, we report a class of memristors based on grain boundaries (GBs) in single-layer MoS2 devices. Specifically, the resistance of GBs emerging from contacts can be easily and repeatedly modulated, with switching ratios up to 1000 and a dynamic negative differential resistance (NDR). Furthermore, the atomically thin nature of MoS2 enables tuning of the set voltage by a third gate terminal in a field-effect geometry, which provides new functionality that is not observed in other known memristive devices.

Orientation of the linear polarization plane of H-alpha emission in prominences

2D distributions of deviations of the polarization plane from the direction tangential to the solar limb (angle χ) and the sign of χare presented for Hα prominences of March 29, 2006. The obtained values of χare in agreement with non-eclipse coronagraphic measurements and indicate the existence of longitudinal magnetic fields. The 2D distributions of the sign of χshow the existence of both «+» and «-» polarities for each prominence. An interpretation in the frame of the existence of oppositely directed magnetic fields is noted.

K-corona recording in the range < 1.4 Rsun

Two approaches are suggested for recording the continuum corona in the range < 1.4 Rsun. They are different from the classical coronagraphic ones. Current state in the thin film technology allows discussing a new generation coronagraph with a variable transmission of an entrance aperture. The estimated coronagraphic factor is 2 orders of magnitude higher compared to a Lyot-type coronagraph. Another approach is based on the use of total solar eclipses at near-Mercury orbits. The instrumental background is decreased at least 3 orders of magnitude. That allows using a more simplified optical sketch.

Near-Limb Zeeman and Hanle Diagnostics

"Weak" magnetic-field diagnostics in faint objects near the bright solar disk are discussed in terms of the level of non-object signatures, in particular, of the stray light in telescopes. Calculated dependencies of the stray light caused by diffraction at the 0.5-, 1.6-, and 4-meter entrance aperture are presented. The requirements for micro-roughness of refractive and reflective primary optics are compared. Several methods for reducing the stray light (the Lyot coronagraphic technique, multiple stages of apodizing in the focal and exit pupil planes, apodizing in the entrance aperture plane with a special mask), and reducing the random and systematic errors are noted. An acceptable level of stray light in telescopes is estimated for the V-profile recording with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than three. Prospects for the limb chromosphere magnetic measurements are indicated.
