Environment-induced sudden transition in quantum discord dynamics

Non-classical correlations play a crucial role in the development of quantum information science. The recent discovery that non-classical correlations can be present even in separable (unentangled) states has broadened this scenario. This generalized quantum correlation has been increasing relevance in several fields, among them quantum communication, quantum computation, quantum phase transitions, and biological systems. We demonstrate here the occurrence of the sudden-change phenomenon and immunity against some sources of noise for the quantum discord and its classical counterpart, in a room temperature nuclear magnetic resonance setup. The experiment is performed in a decohering environment causing loss of phase relations among the energy eigenstates and exchange of energy between system and environment, resulting in relaxation to a Gibbs ensemble.

Normalization procedure for relaxation studies in NMR quantum information processing

NMR quantum information processing studies rely on the reconstruction of the density matrix representing the so-called pseudo-pure states (PPS). An initially pure part of a PPS state undergoes unitary and non-unitary (relaxation) transformations during a computation process, causing a "loss of purity" until the equilibrium is reached. Besides, upon relaxation, the nuclear polarization varies in time, a fact which must be taken into account when comparing density matrices at different instants. Attempting to use time-fixed normalization procedures when relaxation is present, leads to various anomalies on matrices populations. On this paper we propose a method which takes into account the time-dependence of the normalization factor. From a generic form for the deviation density matrix an expression for the relaxing initial pure state is deduced. The method is exemplified with an experiment of relaxation of the concurrence of a pseudo-entangled state, which exhibits the phenomenon of sudden death, and the relaxation of the Wigner function of a pseudo-cat state.

Finite size analysis of a two-dimensional Ising model within a nonextensive approach

In this work we present a thorough analysis of the phase transitions that occur in a ferromagnetic 2D Ising model, with only nearest-neighbors interactions, in the framework of the Tsallis nonextensive statistics. We performed Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices with linear sizes L ranging from 32 up to 512. The statistical weight of the Metropolis algorithm was changed according to the nonextensive statistics. Discontinuities in the m(T) curve are observed for $q\leq 0.5$. However, we have verified only one peak on the energy histograms at the critical temperatures, indicating the occurrence of continuous phase transitions. For the $0.5<q\leq 1.0$ regime, we have found continuous phase transitions between the ordered and the disordered phases, and determined the critical exponents via finite-size scaling. We verified that the critical exponents $α$, $β$ and $γ$ depend on the entropic index $q$ in the range $0.5<q\leq 1.0$ in the form $α(q)=(10 q^{2}-33 q+23)/20$, $β(q)=(2 q-1)/8$ and $γ(q)=(q^{2}-q+7)/4$. On the other hand, the critical exponent $ν$ does not depend on $q$. This suggests a violation of the scaling relations $2 β+γ=d ν$ and $α+2 β+γ=2$ and a nonuniversality of the critical exponents along the ferro-paramagnetic frontier.

Entanglement temperature in molecular magnets composed of S-spin dimers

In the present work, we investigate the quantum thermal entanglement in molecular magnets composed of dimers of spin $S$, using an Entanglement Witness built from measurements of magnetic susceptibility. An entanglement temperature, $T_{e}$, is then obtained for some values of spin $S$. From this, it is shown that $T_{e}$ is proportional to the intradimer exchange interaction $J$ and that entanglement appears only for antiferromagnetic coupling. The results are compared to experiments carried on three isostructural materials: KNaMSi$_{4}$O$_{10}$ (M$=$Mn, Fe or Cu).

Entanglement and Bell's inequality violation above room temperature in metal carboxylates

In the present work we show that a special family of materials, the metal carboxylates, may have entangled states up to very high temperatures. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, we have estimated the critical temperature below which entanglement exists in the cooper carboxylate \{Cu$_2$(O$_2$CH)$_4$\}\{Cu(O$_2$CH)$_2$(2-methylpyridine)$_2$\}, and we have found this to be above room temperature ($T_e \sim 630$ K). Furthermore, the results show that the system remains maximally entangled until close to $\sim 100$ K and the Bell's inequality is violated up to nearly room temperature ($\sim 290$ K).

Phase diagram of a 2D Ising model within a nonextensive approach

In this work we report Monte Carlo simulations of a 2D Ising model, in which the statistics of the Metropolis algorithm is replaced by the nonextensive one. We compute the magnetization and show that phase transitions are present for $q\neq 1$. A $q -$ phase diagram (critical temperature vs. the entropic parameter $q$) is built and exhibits some interesting features, such as phases which are governed by the value of the entropic index $q$. It is shown that such phases favors some energy levels of magnetization states. It is also showed that the contribution of the Tsallis cutoff is essential to the existence of phase transitions.

On the nonextensive character of some magnetic systems

During the past few years, nonextensive statistics has been successfully applied to explain many different kinds of systems. Through these studies some interpretations of the entropic parameter q, which has major role in this statistics, in terms of physical quantities have been obtained. The aim of the present work is to yield an overview of the applications of nonextensive statistics to complex problems such as inhomogeneous magnetic systems.

NMR Analog of Bell's Inequalities Violation Test

In this paper we present an analog of the Bell's inequalities violation test for $N$ qubits to be performed in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer. This can be used to simulate or predict results for different Bell's inequalities tests, with distinct configurations and larger number of qubits. To demonstrate our scheme, we implemented a simulation of the violation of Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH) inequality using a two qubit NMR system and compared the results to those of a photon experiment. The experimental results are well described by Quantum Mechanics theory and a Local Realistic Hidden Variables model which was specially developed for NMR. That is why we refer to this experiment as a {\it simulation} of the Bell's inequality violation. Our result shows explicitly how both theories can be compatible to each other due the detection loophole. In the last part of this work we discuss the possibility of testing fundamental features of quantum mechanics using NMR with highly polarized spins, where a strong discrepancy between quantum mechanics and hidden variables models can be expected.

Experimental Determination of Thermal Entanglement in Spin Clusters using Magnetic Susceptibility Measurements

The present work reports an experimental observation of thermal entanglement in a clusterized spin chain formed in the compound Na$_2$Cu$_5$Si$_4$O$_{14}$. The presence of entanglement was investigated through two measured quantities, an Entanglement Witness and the Entanglement of Formation, both derived from the magnetic susceptibility. It was found that pairwise entanglement exists below $ \sim 200$ K. Tripartite entanglement was also observed below $ \sim 240$ K. A theoretical study of entanglement evolution as a function of applied field and temperature is also presented.

Spin-waves in a complex magnetic system: nonextensive approach

In this paper we analyze the spin-wave excitations (magnons) of an inhomogeneous spin system within the Boltzmann-Gibbs framework and then connect the results with the nonextensive approach (in the sense of Tsallis statistics). Considering an equivalence between those two frameworks, we could connect the entropic parameter q with moments of the distribution of exchange integrals of the inhomogenous system. It ratifies the idea that the entropic parameter is connected to the microscopic properties of the system.

Physical meaning and measurement of the entropic parameter $q$ in an inhomogeneous magnetic systems

In this paper we present a thorough analysis of two systems magnetically inhomogeneous: the manganite La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/MgO and the amorphous alloy Cu$_{90}$Co$_{10}$. In both cases, the non-extensive statistics yield a faithful description of the magnetic behavior of the systems. In the model proposed here, the inhomogeneous magnetic system is composed by many Maxwell-Boltzmann homogeneous bits and the entropic parameter $q$ is related to the moments of the distribution of the inhomogeneous quantity. From the analysis of Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy (STS) images, the $q$ parameter can be directly measured.

Experimental determination of the non-extensive entropic parameter $q$

We show how to extract the $q$ parameter from experimental data, considering an inhomogeneous magnetic system composed by many Maxwell-Boltzmann homogeneous parts, which after integration over the whole system recover the Tsallis non-extensivity. Analyzing the cluster distribution of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ manganite, obtained through scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, we measure the $q$ parameter and predict the bulk magnetization with good accuracy. The connection between the Griffiths phase and non-extensivity is also considered. We conclude that the entropic parameter embodies information about the dynamics, the key role to describe complex systems.

New considerations on the separability of very noisy mixed states and implications for NMR quantum computing

We revise the problem first addressed by Braunstein and co-workers (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83} (5) (1999) 1054) concerning the separability of very noisy mixed states represented by general density matrices with the form $ρ_ε= (1-ε)M_d+ερ_1$. From a detailed numerical analysis, it is shown that: (1) there exist infinite values in the interval taken for the density matrix expansion coefficients, $-1\le c_{α_1,...,α_N}\le 1$, which give rise to {\em non-physical density matrices}, with trace equal to 1, but at least one {\em negative} eigenvalue; (2) there exist entangled matrices outside the predicted entanglement region, and (3) there exist separable matrices inside the same region. It is also shown that the lower and upper bounds of $ε$ depend on the coefficients of the expansion of $ρ_1$ in the Pauli basis. If $ρ_{1}$ is hermitian with trace equal to 1, but is allowed to have {\em negative} eigenvalues, it is shown that $ρ_ε$ can be entangled, even for two qubits.

Influence of charge ordering on the magnetocaloric effect of (Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$ manganites

In the present work we analyze the influence of the charge-ordering on the magnetocaloric effect of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ manganites. The results for the samples with $x<$0.30 present the usual ferromagnetic behavior, peaking at the Curie temperature T$_C$. In contrast, for the samples above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering ($x\sim$0.30), an anomalous magnetic entropy change was observed below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{CO}$, persisting for lower temperatures. This effect is associated to a positive contribution to the magnetic entropy change due to charge-ordering, which is superimposed to the negative contribution from the spin ordering. We found that the charge-ordering component peaks at $T_N$ and is negligible above $T_{CO}$. Moreover, around T$^\star$ (temperature below which the insulator-metal transition induced by magnetic field becomes completely irreversible, where the system remains in such state even after the external magnetic field has been removed), we found extremely large values for the magnetic entropy change, establishing a `colossal' magnetocaloric effect on CMR manganites.

Magnetic phase diagram for a non-extensive system: Experimental connection with manganites

In the present paper we make a thorough analysis of a classical spin system, within the framework of Tsallis nonextensive statistics. From the analysis of the generalized Gibbs free energy, within the mean-field approximation, a para-ferromagnetic phase diagram, which exhibits first and second order phase transitions, is built. The features of the generalized, and classical, magnetic moment are mainly determined by the values of $q$, the non-extensive parameter. The model is successfully applied to the case of La$_{0.60}$Y$_{0.07}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ manganite. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the experimental magnetization on this manganite are faithfully reproduced. The agreement between rather "exotic" magnetic properties of manganites and the predictions of the $q$-statistics, comes to support our early claim that these materials are magnetically nonextensive objects.

NMR evidence for an inhomogeneous transition between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ground states in Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites

The low temperature behavior of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites are known to undergo a transition at $x\sim$0.3, from an insulating ferromagnetic state, at low Ca concentration, to an insulating antiferromagnetic state. Above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering effect ($x\sim 0.3$), a metal-insulator transition induced by an external magnetic field is also observed and related to the collapse of the charge-ordered state. In this paper we show that the ferro-antiferromagnetic transition takes place in an inhomogeneous way: around the critical concentration the sample is a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions. The zero-field NMR measurements show that a fraction of the ferromagnetic regions is in a fast hopping regime, which suggests that a small fraction of the sample could be metallic, even in zero field. This fraction of fast hopping regions is maximal at $x=$0.3, which is also the concentration for which the insulator-metal transition has been observed in the smallest field.

Magnetic behavior of a non-extensive S-spin system: possible connections to manganites

We analyzed the magnetic behavior of a S-spin system within framework of the Tsallis nonextensive statistics, employing the normalized approach. Unusual properties on magnetization, entropy and susceptibility emerge, as a consequence of nonextensivity. We further show that the nonextensive approach can be relevant to the field of manganites, materials which exhibit long-range interactions and fractality, two basic ingredients for nonextensivity. Our results are in qualitative agreement to experimental data in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ and Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.95}$Ga$_{0.05}$O$_3$ manganites.

Evidences for Tsallis non-extensivity on CMR manganites

We found, from the analysis of $M$ vs. $T$ curves of some manganese oxides (manganites), that these systems do not follow the traditional Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, but the Tsallis statistics, within the \QTR{em}{normalized} formalism. Curves were calculated within the mean field approximation, for various ferromagnetic samples and the results were compared to measurements of our own and to various other authors published data, chosen at random from the literature. The agreement between the experimental data and calculated $M_{q}$ vs. $T^{\ast}$ curve, where $T^{\ast}$ is an effective temperature, is excellent for all the compounds. The entropic parameter, $q$, correlates in a simple way with the experimental value of $T_{c}$, irrespect the chemical composition of the compounds, heat treatment or other details on sample preparation. Examples include $q<1$ (superextensivity), $q=1$ (extensivity) and $q>1$ (subextensivity) cases.
