A new approach to slice analysis via slice topology

In this paper we summarize some known facts on slice topology in the quaternionic case, and we deepen some of them by proving new results and discussing some examples. We then show, following [18], how this setting allows us to generalize slice analysis to the general case of functions with values in a real left alternative algebra, which includes the case of slice monogenic functions with values in Clifford algebra. Moreover, we further extend slice analysis, in one and several variables, to functions with values in a Euclidean space of even dimension. In this framework, we study the domains of slice regularity, we prove some extension properties and the validity of a Taylor expansion for a slice regular function.

Analyticity, superoscillations and supershifts in several variables

Superoscillations have roots in various scientific disciplines, including optics, signal processing, radar theory, and quantum mechanics. This intriguing mathematical phenomenon permits specific functions to oscillate at a rate surpassing their highest Fourier component. A more encompassing concept, supershifts, extends the idea of superoscillations to functions that are not sum of exponential functions. This broader notion is linked to Bernstein and Lagrange approximation of analytic functions in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Recent advancements in the theory of superoscillations and supershifts in one variable have focused on their time evolution. This paper takes a step further by expanding the notion of supershifts to include the case of several variables. We provide specific examples related to harmonic analysis where the variables vary in multi-dimensional frequency (space, or scale) domains.

Analyticity and supershift with irregular sampling

The notion of supershift generalizes that one of superoscillation and expresses the fact that the sampling of a function in an interval allows to compute the values of the function outside the interval. In a previous paper we discussed the case in which the sampling of the function is regular and we are considering supershift in a bounded set, while here we investigate how irregularity in the sampling may affect the answer to the question of whether there is any relation between supershift and real analyticity on the whole real line. We show that the restriction to $\mathbb{R}$ of any entire function displays supershift, whereas the converse is, in general, not true. We conjecture that the converse is true as long as the sampling is regular, we discuss examples in support and we prove that the conjecture is indeed true for periodic functions.

Analyticity and supershift with regular sampling

The notion of supershift (in itself a generalization of the notion of superoscillation arising in quantum mechanics) expresses the fact that the sampling of a function in an interval allows to compute the values of the function far from the interval. In this paper we study the relation between supershift and real analyticity. We use a classical result due to Serge Bernstein to show that real analyticity for a complex valued function implies a strong form of supershift. On the other hand, we use a parametric version of a result by Leonid Kantorovitch to show that the converse is not true. We additionally study the stability of functions that satisfy suitable supershift requirements under multiplication by complex numbers or primitivization.

Entire monogenic functions of given proximate order and continuous homomorphisms

Infinite order differential operators appear in different fields of mathematics and physics. In the past decade they turned out to play a crucial role in the theory of superoscillations and provided new insight in the study of the evolution as initial data for the Schrödinger equation. Inspired by the infinite order differential operators arising in quantum mechanics, in this paper we investigate the continuity of a class of infinite order differential operators acting on spaces of entire hyperholomorphic functions. Precisely, we consider homomorphisms acting on functions in the kernel of the Dirac operator. For this class of functions, often called monogenic functions, we introduce the proximate order and prove some fundamental properties. As important application we are able to characterize infinite order differential operators that act continuously on spaces of monogenic entire functions.

Beurling-Lax type theorems and Cuntz relations

We prove various Beurling-Lax type theorems, when the classical backward-shift operator is replaced by a general resolvent operator associated with a rational function. We also study connections to the Cuntz relations. An important tool is a new representation result for analytic functions, in terms of composition and multiplication operators associated with a given rational function. Applications to the theory of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces, also in the indefinite metric setting, are given.

A new method to generate superoscillating functions and supershifts

Superoscillations are band-limited functions that can oscillate faster than their fastest Fourier component. These functions (or sequences) appear in weak values in quantum mechanics and in many fields of science and technology such as optics, signal processing and antenna theory. In this paper we introduce a new method to generate superoscillatory functions that allows us to construct explicitly a very large class of superoscillatory functions.

Gauss sums, superoscillations and the Talbot carpet

We consider the evolution, for a time-dependent Schrödinger equation, of the so called Dirac comb. We show how this evolution allows us to recover explicitly (indeed optically) the values of the quadratic generalized Gauss sums. Moreover we use the phenomenon of superoscillatory sequences to prove that such Gauss sums can be asymptotically recovered from the values of the spectrum of any sufficiently regular function compactly supported on $\R$. The fundamental tool we use is the so called Galilean transform that was introduced and studied in the context on non-linear time dependent Schrödinger equations. Furthermore, we utilize this tool to understand in detail the evolution of an exponential $e^{iωx}$ in the case of a Schrödinger equation with time-independent periodic potential.

Positive and generalized positive real lemma for slice hyperholomorphic functions

In this paper we prove a quaternionic positive real lemma as well as its generalized version, in case the associated kernel has negative squares for slice hyperholomorphic functions. We consider the case of functions with positive real part in the half space of quaternions with positive real part, as well as the case of (generalized) Schur functions in the open unit ball.

S-Spectrum and the quaternionic Cayley transform of an operator

In this paper we define the quaternionic Cayley transformation of a densely defined, symmetric, quaternionic right linear operator and formulate a general theory of defect number in a right quaternionic Hilbert space. This study investigates the relation between the defect number and S-spectrum, and the properties of the Cayley transform in the quaternionic setting.

A Representation of Weyl-Heisenberg Lie Algebra in the Quaternionic Setting

Using a left multiplication defined on a right quaternionic Hilbert space, linear self-adjoint momentum operators on a right quaternionic Hilbert space are defined in complete analogy with their complex counterpart. With the aid of the so-obtained position and momentum operators, we study the Heisenberg uncertainty principle on the whole set of quaternions and on a quaternionic slice, namely on a copy of the complex plane inside the quaternions. For the quaternionic harmonic oscillator, the uncertainty relation is shown to saturate on a neighborhood of the origin in the case we consider the whole set of quaternions, while it is saturated on the whole slice in the case we take the slice-wise approach. In analogy with the complex Weyl-Heisenberg Lie algebra, Lie algebraic structures are developed for the quaternionic case. Finally, we introduce a quaternionic displacement operator which is square integrable, irreducible and unitary, and we study its properties.

The $H^\infty$ functional calculus based on the $S$-spectrum for quaternionic operators and for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators

In this paper we extend the $H^\infty$ functional calculus to quaternionic operators and to $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the associated functional calculus, called $S$-functional calculus. The $S$-functional calculus has two versions one for quaternionic-valued functions and one for Clifford algebra-valued functions and can be considered the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus based on slice hyperholomorphicity because it shares with it the most important properties. The $S$-functional calculus is based on the notion of $S$-spectrum which, in the case of quaternionic normal operators on a Hilbert space, is also the notion of spectrum that appears in the quaternionic spectral theorem. The main purpose of this paper is to construct the $H^\infty$ functional calculus based on the notion of $S$-spectrum for both quaternionic operators and for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators. We remark that the $H^\infty$ functional calculus for $(n+1)$-tuples of operators applies, in particular, to the Dirac operator.

Adaptive orthonormal systems for matrix-valued functions

In this paper we consider functions in the Hardy space $\mathbf{H}_2^{p\times q}$ defined in the unit disc of matrix-valued. We show that it is possible, as in the scalar case, to decompose those functions as linear combinations of suitably modified matrix-valued Blaschke product, in an adaptive way. The procedure is based on a generalization to the matrix-valued case of the maximum selection principle which involves not only selections of suitable points in the unit disc but also suitable orthogonal projections. We show that the maximum selection principle gives rise to a convergent algorithm. Finally, we discuss the case of real-valued signals.

The mathematics of superoscillations

In the past 50 years, quantum physicists have discovered, and experimentally demonstrated, a phenomenon which they termed superoscillations. Aharonov and his collaborators showed that superoscillations naturally arise when dealing with weak values, a notion that provides a fundamentally different way to regard measurements in quantum physics. From a mathematical point of view, superoscillating functions are a superposition of small Fourier components with a bounded Fourier spectrum, which result, when appropriately summed, in a shift that can be arbitrarily large, and well outside the spectrum. Purpose of this work is twofold: on one hand we provide a self-contained survey of the existing literature, in order to offer a systematic mathematical approach to superoscillations; on the other hand, we obtain some new and unexpected results, by showing that superoscillating sequences can be seen of as solutions to a large class of convolution equations and can therefore be treated within the theory of Analytically Uniform spaces. In particular, we will also discuss the persistence of the superoscillatory behavior when superoscillating sequences are taken as initial values of the Schrödinger equation and other equations.

Quantum harmonic oscillator with superoscillating initial datum

In this paper we study the evolution of superoscillating initial data for the quantum driven harmonic oscillator. Our main result shows that superoscillations are amplified by the harmonic potential and that the analytic solution develops a singularity in finite time. We also show that for a large class of solutions of the Schrödinger equation, superoscillating behavior at any given time implies superoscillating behavior at any other time.

An extension of Herglotz's theorem to the quaternions

A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function $n\mapsto r(n)$ from $\mathbb Z$ into $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$ is positive definite if and only there exists a $\mathbb C^{s\times s}$-valued positive measure $dμ$ on $[0,2π]$ such that $r(n)=\int_0^{2π}e^{int}dμ(t)$for $n\in \mathbb Z$. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We study in great detail the case of positive definite functions.

The quantum pigeonhole principle and the nature of quantum correlations

The pigeonhole principle: "If you put three pigeons in two pigeonholes at least two of the pigeons end up in the same hole" is an obvious yet fundamental principle of Nature as it captures the very essence of counting. Here however we show that in quantum mechanics this is not true! We find instances when three quantum particles are put in two boxes, yet no two particles are in the same box. Furthermore, we show that the above "quantum pigeonhole principle" is only one of a host of related quantum effects, and points to a very interesting structure of quantum mechanics that was hitherto unnoticed. Our results shed new light on the very notions of separability and correlations in quantum mechanics and on the nature of interactions. It also presents a new role for entanglement, complementary to the usual one. Finally, interferometric experiments that illustrate our effects are proposed.

Boundary interpolation for slice hyperholomorphic Schur functions

A boundary Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem is posed and solved in the quaternionic setting. Given nonnegative real numbers $κ_1, \ldots, κ_N$, quaternions $p_1, \ldots, p_N$ all of modulus $1$, so that the $2$-spheres determined by each point do not intersect and $p_u \neq 1$ for $u = 1,\ldots, N$, and quaternions $s_1, \ldots, s_N$, we wish to find a slice hyperholomorphic Schur function $s$ so that $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}} s(r p_u) = s_u\quad {\rm for} \quad u=1,\ldots, N,$$ and $$\lim_{\substack{r\rightarrow 1\\ r\in(0,1)}}\frac{1-s(rp_u)\overline{s_u}}{1-r}\leκ_u,\quad {\rm for} \quad u=1,\ldots, N.$$ Our arguments relies on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
