Study of Chemically Peculiar Stars-I : High-resolution Spectroscopy and K2 Photometry of Am Stars in the Region of M44

We present a study based on the high-resolution spectroscopy and K2 space photometry of five chemically peculiar stars in the region of the open cluster M44. The analysis of the high-precision photometric K2 data reveals that the light variations in HD 73045 and HD 76310 are rotational in nature and caused by spots or cloud-like co-rotating structures, which are non-stationary and short-lived. The time-resolved radial velocity measurements, in combination with the K2 photometry, confirm that HD 73045 does not show any periodic variability on timescales shorter than 1.3 d, contrary to previous reports in the literature. In addition to these new rotational variables, we discovered a new heartbeat system, HD 73619, where no pulsational signatures are seen. The spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric analyses indicate that HD 73619 belongs to the peculiar Am class, with either a weak or no magnetic field considering the 200 G detection limit of our study. The Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) profiles for HD 76310 indicate a complex structure in its spectra suggesting that this star is either part of a binary system or surrounded by a cloud shell. When placed in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, all studied stars are evolved from main-sequence and situated in the $δ$ Scuti instability strip. The present work is relevant for further detailed studies of CP stars, such as inhomogeneities (including spots) in the absence of magnetic fields and the origin of the pulsational variability in heartbeat systems.

The World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO-UV), as a bridge to future UV astronomy

The ultraviolet (UV) astronomy is a very demanded branch of space astronomy. Many dozens of short-term UV-experiments in space, as well as long-term observatories, have brought a very important knowledge on the physics and chemistry of the Universe during the last decades. Unfortunately, no large UV-observatories are planned to be launched by most of space agencies in the coming 10 -- 15 years. Conversely, the large UVOIR observatories of the future will appear not earlier than in 2030s. This paper briefly describes the projects that have been proposed by various groups. We conclude that the World Space Observatory -- Ultraviolet (WSO-UV) will be the only 2-m class UV telescope with capabilities similar to those of the HST for the next decade. The WSO-UV has been described in detail in previous publications, and this paper updates the main characteristics of its instruments and the current state of the whole project. It also addresses the major science topics that have been included in the core program of the WSO-UV, making this core program very relevant to the current state of the UV-astronomy. Finally, we also present here the ground segment architecture that will implement this program.

Chemical surface inhomogeneities in late B-type stars with Hg and Mn peculiarity I Spot evolution in HD 11753 on short and long time scales

Aims: Time series of high-resolution spectra of the late B-type star HD 11753 exhibiting HgMn chemical peculiarity are used to study the surface distribution of different chemical elements and their temporal evolution. Methods: High-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra were obtained using the CORALIE spectrograph at La Silla in 2000, 2009, and 2010. Surface maps of YII, SrII, TiII, and CrII were calculated using the Doppler imaging technique. The results were also compared to equivalent width measurements. The evolution of chemical spots both on short and long time scales were investigated. Results: We determine the binary orbit of HD 11753 and fine-tune the rotation period of the primary. The earlier discovered fast evolution of the chemical spots is confirmed by an analysis using both the chemical spot maps and equivalent width measurements. In addition, a long-term decrease in the overall YII and SrII abundances is discovered. A detailed analysis of the chemical spot configurations reveals some possible evidence that a very weak differential rotation is operating in HD 11753.

Doppler imaging of stellar surface structure - XXIV. The lithium-rich single K-giants DP Canum Venaticorum and DI Piscium

We present the first Doppler imaging study of the two rapidly rotating, single K-giants DP CVn and DI Psc in order to study the surface spot configuration and to pinpoint their stellar evolutionary status. Optical spectroscopy and photometry are used to determine the fundamental astrophysical properties. Doppler imaging is applied to recover the surface temperature distribution for both stars, while photometric light-curve inversions are carried out for studying the long-term changes of the surface activity of DP CVn. Surface differential rotation of DP CVn is estimated from cross-correlating the available subsequent Doppler reconstructions separated by roughly one rotation period. Both stars appear to have higher than normal lithium abundance, LTE log n of 2.28 (DP CVn) and 2.20 (DI Psc), and are supposed to be located at the end of the first Li dredge-up on the RGB. Photometric observations reveal rotational modulation with a period of 14.010 d (DP CVn) and 18.066 d (DI Psc). Doppler reconstructions from the available mapping lines well agree in the revealed spot patterns, recovering rather low latitude spots for both stars with temperature contrasts of Delta T ~ 600-800 K below the unspotted photospheric background. Spots at higher latitudes are also found but either with less contrast (DP CVn) or with smaller extent (DI Psc). A preliminary antisolar-type differential rotation with alpha=-0.035 is found for DP CVn from cross-correlating the subsequent Doppler images. Long-term photometric analysis supports the existence of active longitudes, as well as the differential rotation.

Magnetic fields of HgMn stars

The frequent presence of weak magnetic fields on the surface of spotted late-B stars with HgMn peculiarity in binary systems has been controversial during the two last decades. We re-analyse available spectropolarimetric material by applying the moment technique on spectral lines of inhomogeneously distributed elements separately. Furthermore, we present new determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field for the HgMn star HD65949 and the hotter analog of HgMn stars, the PGa star HD19400, using FORS2 installed at the VLT. We also give new measurements of the eclipsing system AR Aur with a primary star of HgMn peculiarity which were obtained with the SOFIN spectropolarimeter installed at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We downloaded from the ESO archive the publically available HARPS spectra for eight HgMn stars and one normal and one superficially normal B-type star obtained in 2010. The application of the moment technique to the HARPS and SOFIN spectra allowed us to study the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field, the crossover effect, and quadratic magnetic fields. Results for the HgMn star HD65949 and the PGa star HD19400 are based on a linear regression analysis of low-resolution spectra obtained with FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode. Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using spectral lines of several elements separately reveal the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field, a quadratic magnetic field, and the crossover effect on the surface of several HgMn stars as well as normal and superficially normal B-type stars. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the existence of intriguing correlations between the strength of the magnetic field, abundance anomalies, and binary properties.

Abundances in the Herbig Ae star HD 101412: Abundance anomalies; Lambda Boo-Vega characteristics?

Context: Recent attention has been directed to abundance variations among very young stars. Aims: To perform a detailed abundance study of the Herbig Ae star HD 101412, taking advantage of its unusually sharp spectral lines. Methods: High-resolution spectra are measured for accurate wavelengths and equivalent widths. Balmer-line fits and ionization equlibria give a relation between Teff, and log(g). Abundance anomalies and uncertain reddening preclude the use of spectral type or photometry to fix Teff. Excitation temperatures are used to break the degeneracy between Teff and log(g). Results: Strong lines are subject to an anomalous saturation that cannot be removed by assuming a low microturbulence. By restricting the analysis to weak (<= 20 m[A]) lines, we find consistent results for neutral and ionized species, based on a model with Teff = 8300K, and log(g)=3.8. The photosphere is depleted in the most refractory elements, while volatiles are normal or, in the case of nitrogen, overabundant with respect to the sun. The anomalies are unlike those of Ap or Am stars. Conclusions: We suggest the anomalous saturation of strong lines arises from heating of the upper atmospheric layers by infalling material from a disk. The overall abundance pattern may be related to those found for the Lambda Boo stars, though the depletions of the refractory elements are milder, more like those of Vega. However, the intermediate volatile zinc is depleted, precluding a straightforward interpretation of the abundance pattern in terms of gas-grain separation.

The exceptional Herbig Ae star HD101412: The first detection of resolved magnetically split lines and the presence of chemical spots in a Herbig star

We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise UVES and a few lower quality HARPS spectra revealing the presence of resolved magnetically split lines. HD101412 is the first Herbig Ae star for which the rotational Doppler effect was found to be small in comparison to the magnetic splitting. The measured mean magnetic field modulus varies from 2.5 to 3.5kG, while the mean quadratic field was found to vary in the range of 3.5 to 4.8kG. To determine the period of variations, we used radial velocity, equivalent width, line width, and line asymmetry measurements of variable spectral lines of several elements, as well as magnetic field measurements. The most pronounced variability was detected for spectral lines of He I and the iron peak elements, whereas the spectral lines of CNO elements are only slightly variable. From spectral variations and magnetic field measurements we derived a potential rotation period P_rot=13.86d, which has to be proven in future studies with a larger number of observations. It is the first time that the presence of element spots is detected on the surface of a Herbig Ae/Be star. Our previous study of Herbig Ae stars revealed a trend towards stronger magnetic fields for younger Herbig Ae stars, confirmed by statistical tests. This is in contrast to a few other (non-statistical) studies claiming that magnetic Herbig Ae stars are progenitors of the magnetic Ap stars. New developments in MHD theory show that the measured magnetic field strengths are compatible with a current-driven instability of toroidal fields generated by differential rotation in the stellar interior. This explanation for magnetic intermediate-mass stars could be an alternative to a frozen-in fossil field.

Magnetic survey of emission line B-type stars with FORS1 at the VLT

We report the results of our search for magnetic fields in a sample of 16 field Be stars, the binary emission-line B-type star upsilon Sgr, and in a sample of fourteen members of the open young cluster NGC3766 in the Carina spiral arm. The sample of cluster members includes Be stars, normal B-type stars and He-strong/He-weak stars. Nine Be stars have been studied with magnetic field time series obtained over ~1 hour to get an insight into the temporal behaviour and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in Be star atmospheres. The spectropolarimetric data were obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four field Be stars, HD62367, mu Cen, o Aqr, and epsilon Tuc. The strongest longitudinal magnetic field, =117+-38G, was detected in the Be star HD62367. Among the Be stars studied with time series, one Be star, lambda Eri, displays cyclic variability of the magnetic field with a period of 21.12min. The binary star upsilon Sgr, in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components with strong emission lines in the visible spectrum, is a magnetic variable star, probably on a timescale of a few months. The maximum longitudinal magnetic field =-102+-10G at MJD54333.018 was measured using hydrogen lines. The cluster NGC3766 seems to be extremely interesting, where we find evidence for the presence of a magnetic field in seven early B-type stars out of the observed fourteen cluster members.

A 3-D study of the photosphere of HD99563: I. Pulsation analysis

We have used high-speed spectroscopy of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD99563 to study the pulsation amplitude and phase behaviour of elements in its stratified atmosphere over one 2.91-d rotation cycle. We identify spectral features related to patches in the surface distribution of chemical elements and study the pulsation amplitudes and phases as the patches move across the stellar disk. The variations are consistent with a distorted nonradial dipole pulsation mode. We measure a 1.6 km/s rotational variation in the mean radial velocities of H-alpha and argue that this is the first observation of H-alpha abundance spots caused by He settling through suppression of convection by the magnetic field on an oblique rotator, in support of a prime theory for the excitation mechanism of roAp star pulsation. We demonstrate that HD99563 is the second roAp star to show aspect dependence of blue-to-red running wave line profile variations in Nd iii spots.

Magnetic fields in classical Be stars

We report the results of our study of magnetic fields in a sample of Be stars using spectropolarimetric data obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. The detected magnetic fields are rather weak, not stronger than ~150G. A few classical Be stars display cyclic variability of the magnetic field with periods of tens of minutes.

First time-series optical photometry from Antarctica

Beating the Earth's day-night cycle is mandatory for long and continuous time-series photometry and had been achieved with either large ground-based networks of observatories at different geographic longitudes or when conducted from space. A third possibility is offered by a polar location with astronomically-qualified site characteristics. Aims. In this paper, we present the first scientific stellar time-series optical photometry from Dome C in Antarctica and analyze approximately 13,000 CCD frames taken in July 2007. We conclude that high-precision CCD photometry with exceptional time coverage and cadence can be obtained at Dome C in Antarctica and be successfully used for time-series astrophysics.

A search for pulsational line profile variations in the delta Scuti star HD21190 and the Ap Sr star HD218994

We present the results of our recent search for pulsational line profile variations in high time resolution UVES spectra of the most evolved Ap star known, the delta Scuti star HD21190, and of the Ap Sr star HD218994. We found that HD218994 is an roAp star with a pulsation period of 5.1 min, which makes it the 36th star known to be a roAp star. No rapid pulsations have been found in the spectra of the delta Scuti star HD21190. However, we detect moving peaks in the cores of spectral lines, which indicate the presence of non-radial pulsations in this star.

Discovery of pulsational line profile variations in the delta Scuti star HD21190 and in the Ap Sr star HD218994

Asteroseismology has the potential to provide new insights into the physics of stellar interiors. We have obtained UVES high time resolution observations of the delta Scuti star HD21190 and of the Ap Sr star HD218994 to search for pulsational line profile variations. We report the discovery of a new roAp star, HD218994, with a pulsation period of 14.2 min. This is one of the most evolved roAp stars. No rapid pulsations have been found in the spectra of the cool Ap star - delta Scuti star HD21190. However, we detect with unprecedented clarity for a delta Sct star moving peaks in the cores of spectral lines that indicate the presence of high degree non-radial pulsations in this star.

A study of the magnetic helium variable emission-line star HD 125823

The 5.9 M_sun star HD 125823 is a striking helium variable with a period of 8.82 d, ranging in helium spectral type from He-strong B2 to He-weak B8. For the first time we present here observational evidence for the appearance of emission lines of Mn and Fe in a variable magnetic star.

Inhomogeneous surface distribution of chemical elements in the eclipsing binary AR Aur: A new challenge for our understanding of HgMn stars

We present the results of a high spectral resolution study of the eclipsing binary AR Aur. AR Aur is the only known eclipsing binary with a HgMn primary star exactly on the ZAMS and a secondary star still contracting towards the ZAMS. We detect for the first time in the spectra of the primary star that for many elements the line profiles are variable over the rotation period. The strongest profile variations are found for the elements Pt, Hg, Sr, Y, Zr, He and Nd, while the line profiles of O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe show only weak distortions over the rotation period. The slight variability of He and Y is also confirmed by the study of high resolution spectra of another HgMn star: alpha And. A preliminary modelling of the inhomogeneous distribution has been carried out for Sr and Y. Our analysis shows that these elements are very likely concentrated in a fractured ring along the rotational equator. It may be an essential clue for the explanation of the origin of the chemical anomalies in HgMn stars (which are very frequently found in binary and multiple systems) that one large fraction of the ring is missing exactly on the surface area which is permanently facing the secondary, and another small one on the almost opposite side. The results presented about the inhomogeneous distribution of various chemical elements over the stellar surface of the primary suggest new directions for investigations to solve the question of the origin of abundance anomalies in B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity.

Vertical distribution of chromium in the atmospheres of HgMn stars

We use multiplet 30 Cr II lines in the wings of H_beta to test the hypothesis of an anomalous concentration of Cr in the upper layers of the atmospheres of a sample of 10 HgMn stars. These lines are at different distances from the H_beta line center and are therefore formed at different depths in the stellar atmosphere. Except for HD49606, all HgMn stars show an increase of Cr abundance with height in the stellar atmosphere. A similar vertical distribution of Cr, but less pronounced, has been previously found in Am stars. In contrast, no variation of Cr abundance with the depth has been found for the normal late B-type star HD196426 and the weak magnetic late B-type star HD168733. It is possible that in HgMn stars the vertical stratification parameter, a, depends on T_eff, with the strongest vertical gradient being found in the hotter stars. No correlation was found between $a$ and the average stellar abundance log epsilon(Cr/H).

Multi-element Doppler imaging of kappa Psc

kappa Psc (HD 220825) is a typical Chromium Ap star that happens to have optimal parameters for Doppler imaging (DI). Its short rotational period of less then 2 days, rotational velocity of ~40 km/s, and a moderate inclination of the rotational axis put modest requirements on spectroscopic observations. Anomalies of iron peak elements are clearly present, but small enough to cause significant deviations from model atmospheres with scaled solar abundances. We applied DI to kappa Psc once before, determining the distribution of Cr (Ryabchikova et al. 1996, hereafter Paper I). However, due to strong blending of Fe, the image was based on two short (~2 Angstroems) spectral intervals, dominated by Cr lines. Since the first paper we obtained additional spectra and developed a new code that allows to perform multi-element DI and thus to use larger spectral interval(s). We demonstrate the abilities of the new code and present new maps of Cr and Fe. A much larger time base allowed us to improve the rotational period of kappa Psc as well.
