Electron-Scale-Driven Turbulence by Negative-Density-Gradient in NSTX

Gyrokinetic simulations of an NSTX spherical-tokamak plasma reveal novel negative-density-gradient (NDG) drift waves at electron-gyroradius-scale that drive turbulent transport comparable to the experimental power flow. Linear simulations indicate that the dominant instability is a trapped-electron electron-scale tearing-parity mode driven mainly by negative electron density gradient, $a/L_{ne} \equiv - a/n_e \, (dn_e/dr) < 0$. Although thermal transport is mainly carried by transverse magnetic, $δA_{\parallel}$, fluctuations, the growth rate is sensitive to compressional magnetic fluctuations, $δB_{\parallel}$, differentiating these from standard microtearing modes (MTMs). Linear sensitivity analysis also reveals that the modes are most unstable at lower collisionality, consistent with the trapped-electron character. Electron-scale and multi-scale nonlinear simulations show that these modes can account for several megawatts of experimental power, with the latter suggesting that experimental gradients may lie at a bifurcation between distinct turbulence regimes.

Impact of energetic alpha particles on core turbulence in an ARC-class fusion power plant

In this work, we investigate the impact of fusion-born alpha particles on core turbulence and transport in the ARC tokamak fusion power plant using linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic CGYRO simulations. A significant reduction in ion-scale turbulent heat and particle fluxes is observed in the inner core (r/a $\leq$ 0.5), which is associated with multiscale interactions between fast ion-destabilized modes, zonal flows, and the background turbulence. A nonlinear upshift in the ITG critical gradient is observed in the simulations with fast alphas compared to those with artificially thermalized alphas. The turbulence reduction is found to scale beneficially with alpha particle density and plasma $β_e$, and the radial extent of the turbulence suppression is limited to the volume containing a significant density of fast particles. The suitability of local gyrokinetics and potential impacts of fast ion effects on fusion performance are discussed.

Demonstrating a Pre-Exascale, Cost-Effective Multi-Cloud Environment for Scientific Computing

Scientific computing needs are growing dramatically with time and are expanding in science domains that were previously not compute intensive. When compute workflows spike well in excess of the capacity of their local compute resource, capacity should be temporarily provisioned from somewhere else to both meet deadlines and to increase scientific output. Public Clouds have become an attractive option due to their ability to be provisioned with minimal advance notice. The available capacity of cost-effective instances is not well understood. This paper presents expanding the IceCube's production HTCondor pool using cost-effective GPU instances in preemptible mode gathered from the three major Cloud providers, namely Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and the Google Cloud Platform. Using this setup, we sustained for a whole workday about 15k GPUs, corresponding to around 170 PFLOP32s, integrating over one EFLOP32 hour worth of science output for a price tag of about $60k. In this paper, we provide the reasoning behind Cloud instance selection, a description of the setup and an analysis of the provisioned resources, as well as a short description of the actual science output of the exercise.

Study of the process e+e- -> omega p0 with the KLOE detector

Using ~600 pb-1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAPhiNE, we have studied the production cross section of pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 and p0p0 gamma final states in e+e- collisions at center of mass energies between 1000 and 1030 MeV. By fitting the observed interference pattern around Mphi for both final states, we extract a measurement (preliminary) for the ratio Gamma(omega -> pi0 gamma)/Gamma(omega -> pi+ pi- pi0) = 0.0934 +- 0.0022. Since these two final states represent the 98% of the omega decay channels, we use unitarity to derive BR(omega -> pi+pi-pi0)= (89.94 +- 0.23)% and BR(omega -> pi0 gamma) = (8.40 +- 0.19)%. Moreover, the parameters describing the e+e- -> pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 reaction around Mphi are used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating phi -> omega pi0 decay: BR(phi -> omega pi0) = (5.63 +- 0.70) x 10^-5.

Measurement of the slope parameter αfor the η\to 3π^0 decay at KLOE

We report a preliminary measurement of the slope parameter $α$ for the $η\to 3\piz$ decay carried out with KLOE at DA$Φ$NE; where $α$ is the parameter describing the energy dependence of the square of the matrix element for this decay. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot with a collected statistic of 420 pb$^{-1}$ we determine $α= -0.027 \pm 0.004 (stat) ^{+0.004}_{-0.006} (syst)$. This result is consistent with current chiral perturbation theory calculations within the unitary approach.

Determination of the η\toπ^+π^-π^0 Dalitz Plot slopes and asymmetries with the KLOE detector

We have studied, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $Φ$-Factory, the dynamics of the decay $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ using data from the radiative $ϕ\toηγ$ decay for an integrated luminosity $L = 450 \textrm{pb^{-1}}$. From a fit to the Dalitz plot density distribution we obtain a precise measurement of the slope parameters. This should allow to improve the knowledge of the decay amplitude which is sensitive to the u-d quark mass difference. We also present new best results on the C-violating asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay.
