Imaging quantum interference in a monolayer Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate

Single atomic defects are prominent windows to look into host quantum states because collective responses from the host states emerge as localized states around the defects. Friedel oscillations and Kondo clouds in Fermi liquids are quintessential examples. However, the situation is quite different for quantum spin liquid (QSL), an exotic state of matter with fractionalized quasiparticles and topological order arising from a profound impact of quantum entanglement. Elucidating the underlying local electronic property has been challenging due to the charge neutrality of fractionalized quasiparticles and the insulating nature of QSLs. Here, using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we report atomically resolved images of monolayer $\alpha-RuCl_3$, the most promising Kitaev QSL candidate, on metallic substrates. We find quantum interference in the insulator manifesting as incommensurate and decaying spatial oscillations of the local density of states around defects with a characteristic bias dependence. The oscillation differs from any known spatial structures in its nature and does not exist in other Mott insulators, implying it is an exotic oscillation involved with excitations unique to $\alpha-RuCl_3$. Numerical simulations suggest that the observed oscillation can be reproduced by assuming that itinerant Majorana fermions of Kitaev QSL are scattered across the Majorana Fermi surface. The oscillation provides a new approach to exploring Kitaev QSLs through the local response against defects like Friedel oscillations in metals.

A Monomer Mott Insulator (BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$ as a Potential Nodal Line System

We report the band structure calculations and the experimental results of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility in a spin-1/2 (BEDT-TTF)$^{\bullet +}$ monomer Mott insulator (BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$_2$. The band calculations indicate a Dirac semimetal state with nodal lines at the Fermi level. The resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature are well interpreted in terms of the monomer Mott insulating state instead of the expected semimetal state probably owing to strong electron correlation. In addition, we find that an Arrhenius-type steep reduction of the paramagnetic susceptibility appears below approximately 25 K, which indicates a spin-singlet ground state.

Intrinsic suppression of topological thermal Hall effect in an exactly solvable quantum magnet

In contrast to electron (fermion) systems, topological phases of charge neutral bosons have been poorly understood despite recent extensive research on insulating magnets. The most important unresolved issue is how the inevitable inter-bosonic interactions influence the topological properties. It has been proposed that the quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ with an exact ground state serves as an ideal platform for this investigation, as the system is expected to be a magnetic analogue of a Chern insulator with electrons replaced by bosonic magnetic excitations (triplons). Here, in order to examine topologically protected triplon chiral edge modes in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, we measured and calculated the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$. Our calculations show that the sign of $κ_{xy}$ is negative, which is opposite to the previous calculations, and its magnitude is 2$π$ times smaller. No discernible $κ_{xy}$ was observed, which is at most 20-30% of our calculations if present. This implies that even relatively weak inter-particle interactions seriously influence the topological transport properties at finite temperatures. These demonstrate that, in contrast to fermionic cases, the picture of non-interacting topological quasi-particles cannot be naively applied to bosonic systems, calling special attention to the interpretation of the topological bosonic excitations reported for various insulating magnets.

TXS 1206+549: a new $γ$-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy at redshift 1.34?

Radio and $γ$-ray loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are unique objects to study the formation and evolution of relativistic jets, as they are believed to have high accretion rates and powered by low mass black holes contrary to that known for blazars. However, only about a dozen $γ$-ray detected NLS1s ($γ$-NLS1s) are known to date and all of them are at $z\le1$. Here, we report the identification of a new $γ$-ray emitting NLS1 TXS 1206+549 at $z=1.344$. A near-infrared spectrum taken with the Subaru telescope showed H$β$ emission line with FWHM of $1194\pm77$ km s$^{-1}$ and weak [O III] emission line but no optical Fe II lines, due to the limited wavelength coverage and poor signal-to-noise ratio. However, UV Fe II lines are present in the SDSS optical spectrum. The source is very radio-loud, unresolved, and has a flat radio spectrum. The broadband SED of the source has the typical two hump structure shown by blazars and other $γ$-NLS1s. The source exhibits strong variability at all wavelengths such as the optical, infrared, and $γ$-ray bands. All these observed characteristics show that TXS 1206+549 is the most distant $γ$-NLS1 known to date.

Influence of Se doping in recently synthesized NaInS2-xSex solid solutions for potential thermo-mechanical applications studied via first-principles method

In the present work, the structural and hitherto unexplored thermal and mechanical properties of NaInS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) compounds have been studied using the density functional theory. Besides, the elastic anisotropy indices and hardnesses of NaInS2-xSex have been investigated as Se content is varied. The mechanical stability of all the compounds under study has been confirmed. The ratio of shear to bulk modulus (G/B) is low suggesting that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds exhibit damage tolerant (ductility) properties while rest of the compositions are brittle in nature. The predicted hardness (H) values are also influenced with the Se content in the following order: H (NaInSSe) > H (NaInS2) > H (NaInSe2) > H (NaInS1.5Se0.5) > H (NaInS0.5Se1.5). All the anisotropic indices under study indicate that NaInS2-xSex compounds are anisotropic in nature. The Mulliken bond population analysis suggests that the degree of covalency of In-S/Se bonds decreases when S is substituted by Se. The origin of low Debye temperature (ΘD) and low minimum thermal conductivity (Kmin) have been successfully explained by considering the mean atomic weight (M/n) and average bond strength of the compounds. Temperature dependence of heat capacities (Cv, Cp) and linear thermal expansion coefficient (α ) are also estimated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model and discussed. The low values of Kmin, ΘD and α and damage tolerant behavior clearly indicate that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds can be used as promising thermal barrier coating materials for high temperature applications.

NaInX2 (X = S, Se) layered materials for energy harvesting applications: First-principles insights into optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties

In the present study, the structural, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of two isostructural chalcogenide materials, NaInS2 and NaInSe2 with hexagonal symmetry (R-3m) have been studied using the first principles method. A very good agreement has been found between our results with the available experimental and theoretical ones. The studied materials are semiconducting in nature as confirmed from the electronic band structure and optical properties. The strong hybridizations among s orbitals of Na, In and Se atoms push the bottom of the conduction band downward resulting in a narrower band gap of NaInSe2 compared to that of NaInS2 compound. Different optical (dielectric function, photoconductivity, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, refractive index and loss function) and thermoelectric (Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, power factor and thermal conductivity) properties of NaInX2 (X = S, Se) have been studied in detail for the first time. It is found that all these properties are significantly anisotropic due to the strongly layered structure of NaInX2 (X = S, Se). Strong optical absorption with sharp peaks is found in the far visible to mid ultraviolet (UV) regions while the reflectivity is low in the UV region for both the compounds. Such features indicate feasibility of applications in optoelectronic sector. The calculated thermoelectric power factors at 1000 K for NaInS2 and NaInSe2 along a-axis are found to be 151.5 micro Watt /cmK2 and 154 micro Watt/cmK2, respectively and the corresponding ZT values are ~0.70. The obtained thermal conductivity along a-axis for both compounds is high (~22 W/mK).This suggests that the reduction of such high thermal conductivity is important to achieve higher ZT values of the NaInX2(X = S, Se) compounds.

ALMA Twenty-six arcmin$^2$ Survey of GOODS-S at One-millimeter (ASAGAO): X-ray AGN Properties of Millimeter-Selected Galaxies

We investigate the X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) properties of millimeter galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S) field detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), by utilizing the Chandra 7-Ms data, the deepest X-ray survey to date. Our millimeter galaxy sample comes from the ASAGAO survey covering 26 arcmin$^2$ (12 sources at a 1.2-mm flux-density limit of $\approx$0.6 mJy), supplemented by the deeper but narrower 1.3-mm survey of a part of the ASAGAO field by Dunlop et al.\ (2017). Fourteen out of the total 25 millimeter galaxies have Chandra counterparts. The observed AGN fractions at $z=1.5-3$ is found to be 90$^{+8}_{-19}$\% and $57^{+23}_{-25}$\% for the ultra/luminous infrared galaxies with $\log L_{\rm IR}/L_{\odot} = 12-12.8$ and $\log L_{\rm IR}/L_{\odot} = 11.5-12$, respectively. The majority ($\sim$2/3) of the ALMA and/or Herschel detected X-ray AGNs at $z=1.5-3$ appear to be star-formation dominant populations, having $L_{\rm X}$/ $L_{\rm IR}$ ratios smaller than the "simultaneous evolution" value expected from the local black-hole mass to stellar mass ($M_{\rm BH}$-$M_*$) relation. On the basis of the $L_{\rm X}$ and stellar mass relation, we infer that a large fraction of star-forming galaxies at $z=1.5-3$ have black hole masses smaller than those expected from the local $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_*$ relation. This is opposite to previous reports on luminous AGN at same redshifts detected in wider and shallower surveys, which are subject to selection biases against lower luminosity AGN. Our results are consistent with an evolutionary scenario that star formation occurs first, and an AGN-dominant phase follows later, in objects finally evolving into galaxies with classical bulges.

Bimodal morphologies of massive galaxies at the core of a protocluster at z=3.09 and the strong size growth of a brightest cluster galaxy

We present the near-infrared high resolution imaging of an extremely dense group of galaxies at the core of the protocluster at $z=3.09$ in the SSA22 field by using the adaptive optics AO188 and the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS) on Subaru Telescope. Wide morphological variety of them suggests their on-going dramatic evolutions. One of the two quiescent galaxies (QGs), the most massive one in the group, is a compact elliptical with an effective radius $r_{e} = 1.37\pm0.75$ kpc. It supports the two-phase formation scenario of giant ellipticals today that a massive compact elliptical is formed at once and evolves in the size and stellar mass by series of mergers. Since this object is a plausible progenitor of a brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of one of the most massive clusters today, it requires strong size ($\ga10$) and stellar mass ($\sim$ four times by $z=0$) growths. Another QG hosts an AGN(s) and is fitted with a model composed from an nuclear component and Sérsic model. It shows spatially extended [O{\footnotesize III}]$λ$5007 emission line compared to the continuum emission, a plausible evidence of outflows. Massive star forming galaxies (SFGs) in the group are two to three times larger than the field SFGs at similar redshift. Although we obtained the $K$-band image deeper than the previous one, we found no candidate new members. This implies a physical deficiency of low mass galaxies with stellar mass $M_{\star}\la4\times10^{10}~M_{\odot}$ and/or poor detection completeness of them owing to their diffuse morphologies.

[OIII] emission line as a tracer of star-forming galaxies at high redshifts: Comparison between H$α$ and [OIII] emitters at $z$=2.23 in HiZELS

We investigate the properties of $z$=2.23 H$α$ and [OIII]$λ$5007 emitters using the narrow-band-selected samples obtained from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS: Sobral et al. 2013). We construct two samples of the H$α$ and [OIII] emitters and compare their integrated physical properties. We find that the distribution of stellar masses, dust extinction, star formation rates (SFRs), and specific SFRs, is not statistically different between the two samples. When we separate the full galaxy sample into three subsamples according to the detections of the H$α$ and/or [OIII] emission lines, most of the sources detected with both H$α$ and [OIII] show ${\rm log(sSFR_{UV})}$$\gtrsim$-9.5. The comparison of the three subsamples suggests that sources with strong [OIII] line emission tend to have the highest star-forming activity out all galaxies that we study. We argue that the [OIII] emission line can be used as a tracer of star-forming galaxies at high redshift, and that it is especially useful to investigate star-forming galaxies at $z$$>$3, for which H$α$ emission is no longer observable from the ground.

Herschel protocluster survey: A search for dusty star-forming galaxies in protoclusters at z=2-3

We present a Herschel/SPIRE survey of three protoclusters at z=2-3 (2QZCluster, HS1700, SSA22). Based on the SPIRE colours (S350/S250 and S500/S350) of 250 $μ$m sources, we selected high redshift dusty star-forming galaxies potentially associated with the protoclusters. In the 2QZCluster field, we found a 4-sigma overdensity of six SPIRE sources around 4.5' (~2.2 Mpc) from a density peak of H$α$ emitters at z=2.2. In the HS1700 field, we found a 5-sigma overdensity of eight SPIRE sources around 2.1' (~1.0 Mpc) from a density peak of LBGs at z=2.3. We did not find any significant overdensities in SSA22 field, but we found three 500 $μ$m sources are concentrated 3' (~1.4 Mpc) east to the LAEs overdensity. If all the SPIRE sources in these three overdensities are associated with protoclusters, the inferred star-formation rate densities are 10$^3$-10$^4$ times higher than the average value at the same redshifts. This suggests that dusty star-formation activity could be very strongly enhanced in z~2-3 protoclusters. Further observations are needed to confirm the redshifts of the SPIRE sources and to investigate what processes enhance the dusty star-formation activity in z~2-3 protoclusters.

Conventional s-wave superconductivity in BiS2-based NdO0.71F0.29BiS2 revealed by thermal transport measurements

To study the superconducting gap structure of BiS$_2$-based layered compound NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ ($T$$_{\rm c}$ = 5 K), we measured the thermal conductivity $κ$, which is a sensitive probe of the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum. In the absence of a magnetic field, there is only a very small residual linear term in the thermal conductivity $κ_{0}$/$T$ at $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0, indicating the absence of a residual normal fluid, expected for nodal superconductors. Moreover, the applied magnetic field hardly affects the thermal conductivity in the wide range of the vortex state, indicating the absence of Doppler shifted quasiparticles. These results provide evidence that NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ is fully gapped superconductor. The obtained gap structure, along with the robustness of the superconductivity against the impurity, suggest a conventional $s$-wave superconducting state in NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$.

An extremely dense group of massive galaxies at the centre of the protocluster at z = 3.09 in the SSA22 field

We report the discovery of an extremely dense group of massive galaxies at the centre of the protocluster at $z=3.09$ in the SSA22 field from near-infrared spectroscopy conducted with the Multi-Object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) equipped on the Subaru Telecope. The newly discovered group comprises seven galaxies confirmed at $z_{\rm spec}\approx3.09$ within 180 kpc including five massive objects with the stellar masses larger than $10^{10.5}~M_{\odot}$ and is associated with a bright sub-mm source SSA22-AzTEC14. The dynamical mass of the group estimated from the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the members is $M_{\rm dyn}\sim1.6\pm0.3\times10^{13}~M_{\odot}$. Such a dense group is expected to be very rare at high redshift as we found only a few comparable systems in large-volume cosmological simulations. Such rare groups in the simulations are hosted in collapsed halos with $M_{\rm vir}=10^{13.4}-10^{14.0}~M_{\odot}$ and evolve into the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) of the most massive clusters at present. The observed AzTEC14 group at $z=3.09$ is therefore very likely to be a proto-BCG in the multiple merger phase. The observed total stellar mass of the group is $5.8^{+5.1}_{-2.0}\times10^{11}~M_{\odot}$. It suggests that over half the stellar mass of its descendant had been formed by $z=3$. Moreover, we identified over two members for each of the four Ly$α$ blobs (LABs) using our new spectroscopic data. This verifies our previous argument that many of the LABs in the SSA22 protocluster associated with multiple developed stellar components.

Proximity to Fermi-surface topological change in superconducting LaO0.54F0.46BiS2

The electronic structure of nearly optimally-doped novel superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$ (${\it x}$ = 0.46) was investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We clearly observed band dispersions from 2 to 6 eV binding energy and near the Fermi level (${\it E}_{\rm F}$), which are well reproduced by first principles calculations when the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account. The ARPES intensity map near ${\it E}_{\rm F}$ shows a square-like distribution around the $Γ$(Z) point in addition to electronlike Fermi surface (FS) sheets around the X(R) point, indicating that FS of LaO$_{0.54}$F$_{0.46}$BiS$_2$ is in close proximity to the theoretically-predicted topological change.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling and phase diffusion in a La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ intrinsic Josephson junction stack

We performed measurements of switching current distribution in a submicron La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) intrinsic Josephson junction (IJJ) stack in a wide temperature range. The escape rate saturates below approximately 2\,K, indicating that the escape event is dominated by a macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) process with a crossover temperature $T^{*}\approx2\,$K. We applied the theory of MQT for IJJ stacks, taking into account dissipation and the phase re-trapping effect in the LSCO IJJ stack. The theory is in good agreement with the experiment both in the MQT and in the thermal activation regimes.

An H-alpha search for over-dense regions at z=2.23

We present the results of a narrow-band (H2S1, 2.121/0.021um) imaging search with WFCAM/UKIRT for H-alpha emitters around several potential signposts of rare (10^-7-10^-8 Mpc^-3) over-dense regions at z=2.23: an over-density of QSOs (2QZ cluster), a powerful, high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG), and a concentration of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and optically faint radio galaxies (OFRGs). In total, we detect 137 narrow-band emitter candidates down to emission-line fluxes of 0.5-1 x 10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2, across a total area of 0.56 sq. degrees (2.1 x 10^5 comoving Mpc at z=2.23) in these fields. The BzK colours of the emitters suggest that at least 80% of our sample are likely to be H-alpha emitters (HAEs) at z=2.23. This is one of the largest HAE samples known at z>2. We find modest (~3-sigma) local over-densities of emitters associated with all the three targets. In the 2QZ cluster field, the emitters show a striking filamentary structure connecting four of the z=2.23 QSOs extending over 30Mpc (comoving). In the HzRG and SMG/OFRG fields, the structures appear to be smaller and seen only in the vicinities of the targets. The K-band magnitudes and the H-alpha equivalent widths of the emitters are weakly correlated with the over-density of the emitters: emitters in over-dense region are more evolved systems compared to those in under-dense regions at z=2.23. We find several examples of extended HAEs in our target fields, including a striking example with a spatial extent of 7.5 arcsec (60 kpc at z=2.23) in the 2QZ field, suggesting that these are relatively common in high-density regions. We conclude that narrow-band H-alpha surveys are efficient routes to map over-dense regions at high-z and thus to understand the relation between the growth of galaxies and their surrounding large-scale structures.

"Dark" GRB 080325 in a Dusty Massive Galaxy at z ~ 2

We present optical and near infrared observations of GRB 080325 classified as a "Dark GRB". Near-infrared observations with Subaru/MOIRCS provided a clear detection of afterglow in Ks band, although no optical counterpart was reported. The flux ratio of rest-wavelength optical to X-ray bands of the afterglow indicates that the dust extinction along the line of sight to the afterglow is Av = 2.7 - 10 mag. This large extinction is probably the major reason for optical faintness of GRB 080325. The J - Ks color of the host galaxy, (J - Ks = 1.3 in AB magnitude), is significantly redder than those for typical GRB hosts previously identified. In addition to J and Ks bands, optical images in B, Rc, i', and z' bands with Subaru/Suprime-Cam were obtained at about one year after the burst, and a photometric redshift of the host is estimated to be z_{photo} = 1.9. The host luminosity is comparable to L^{*} at z \sim 2 in contrast to the sub-L^{*} property of typical GRB hosts at lower redshifts. The best-fit stellar population synthesis model for the host shows that a large dust extinction (Av = 0.8 mag) attributes to the red nature of the host and that the host galaxy is massive (M_{*} = 7.0 \times 10^{10} Msun) which is one of the most massive GRB hosts previously identified. By assuming that the mass-metallicity relation for star-forming galaxies at z \sim 2 is applicable for the GRB host, this large stellar mass suggests the high metallicity environment around GRB 080325, consistent with inferred large extinction.

A galaxy populations study of a radio-selected protocluster at z~3.1

We present a population study of several types of galaxies within the protocluster surrounding the radio galaxy MRC0316-257 at z~3.1. In addition to the known population of Ly_alpha emitters (LAEs) and [OIII] emitters, we use colour selection techniques to identify protocluster candidates that are Lyman break galaxies (LBG) and Balmer break galaxies (BBGs). The radio galaxy field contains an excess of LBG candidates, with a surface density 1.6\pm0.3 times larger than found for comparable blank fields. This surface overdensity corresponds to an LBG volume overdensity of ~8\pm4. The BBG photometric redshift distribution peaks at the protocluster's redshift, but we detect no significant surface overdensity of BBG. This is not surprising because a volume overdensity similar to the LBGs would have resulted in a surface density of ~1.2 that found in the blank field. This could not have been detected in our sample. Masses and star formation rates of the candidate protocluster galaxies are determined using SED fitting. These properties are not significantly different from those of field galaxies. The galaxies with the highest masses and star formation rates are located near the radio galaxy, indicating that the protocluster environment influences galaxy evolution at z~3. We conclude that the protocluster around MRC0316-257 is still in the early stages of formation.

Lyman-alpha Blobs Like Company : The Discovery of A Candidate 100 kpc Lyman-alpha Blob Near to A Radio Galaxy with A Giant Lyman-alpha halo, B3 J2330+3927 at z=3.1

We present the discovery of a candidate of giant radio-quiet Lyman-alpha (Lya) blob (RQLAB) in a large-scale structure around a high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) lying in a giant Lya halo, B3 J2330+3927 at redshift z=3.087. We obtained Lya imaging around B3 J2330+3927 with Subaru/Suprime-Cam to search for Lya emitters (LAEs) and absorbers (LAAs) at redshift z=3.09+-0.03. We detected candidate 127 LAEs and 26 LAAs in the field of view of 31' x 24'. We found that B3 J2330+3927 is surrounded by a 130 kpc Lya halo and a large-scale (60 x 20 comoving Mpc) filamentary structure. The large-scale structure contains one prominent local density peak with an overdensity of greater than 5, which is 8' (15 comoving Mpc) away from B3 J2330+3927. In this peak, we discovered a candidate 100 kpc RQLAB. The existence of both types of Lya nebulae in the same large-scale structure suggests that giant Lya nebulae need special large-scale environments to form. On smaller scales, however, the location of B3 J2330+3927 is not a significant local density peak in this structure, in contrast to the RQLAB. There are two possible interpretations of the difference of the local environments of these two Lya nebulae. Firstly, RQLAB may need a prominent (delta ~ 5) density peak of galaxies to form through intense star-bursts due to frequent galaxy interactions/mergers and/or continuous gas accretion in an overdense environment. On the other hand, Lya halo around HzRG may not always need a prominent density peak to form if the surrounding Lya halo is mainly powered by its radio and AGN activities. Alternatively, both RQLAB and Lya halo around HzRG may need prominent density peaks to form but we could not completely trace the density of galaxies because we missed evolved and dusty galaxies in this survey.
