Thermoelectric properties of LaRh$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_3$

We report measurements and analyses of resistivity, thermopower, and thermal conductivity of polycrystalline samples of perovskite LaRh$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_3$. The thermopower is found to be large at 800 K (185 $μ$V/K for $x=$0.3), which is ascribed to the high-temperature stability of the low-spin state of Rh$^{3+}$/Rh$^{4+}$ ions. This clearly contrasts with the thermopower of the isostructural oxide LaCoO$_3$, which rapidly decreases above 500 K owing to the spin-state transition. The spin state of the transition-metal ions is one of the most important parameters in oxide thermoelectrics.

Two-Staged Magnetoresistance Driven by Ising-like Spin Sublattice in SrCo6O11

A two-staged, uniaxial magnetoresistive effect has been discovered in SrCo6O11 having a layered hexagonal structure. Conduction electrons and localized Ising spins are in different sublattices but their interpenetration makes the conduction electrons sensitively pick up the stepwise field-dependence of magnetization. The stepwise field-dependence suggests two competitive interlayer interactions between ferromagnetic Ising-spin layers, i.e., a ferromagnetic nearest-layer interaction and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-layer interaction. This oxide offers a unique opportunity to study nontrivial interplay between conduction electrons and Ising spins, the coupling of which can be finely controlled by a magnetic field of a few Tesla.

Distinct Fermi-Momentum Dependent Energy Gaps in Deeply Underdoped Bi2212

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy applied to deeply underdoped cuprate superconductors Bi2Sr2(Ca,Y)Cu2O8 (Bi2212) to reveal the presence of two distinct energy gaps exhibiting different doping dependence. One gap, associated with the antinodal region where no coherent peak is observed, increases with underdoping - a behavior known for more than a decade and considered as the general gap behavior in the underdoped regime. The other gap, associated with the near nodal regime where a coherent peak in the spectrum can be observed, does not increase with less doping - a behavior not observed in the single particle spectra before. We propose a two-gap scenario in momentum space that is consistent with other experiments and may contain important information on the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in Sr_(1-x)Y_xCoO_(3-delta) (0.2 < x < 0.25)

We have measured magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of Sr$_{1-x}$Y$_x$CoO$_{3-δ}$ ($x=$ 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.215, 0.225, 0.25, 0.3, and 0.4), and have found that Sr$_{1-x}$Y$_x$CoO$_{3-δ}$ is a room temperature ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of 335 K in a narrow compositional range of 0.2 $\leq x\leq$ 0.25. This is the highest transition temperature among perovskite Co oxides. The saturation magnetization for $x=$ 0.225 is 0.25 $μ_B$/Co at 10 K, which implies that the observed ferromagnetism is a bulk effect. We attribute this ferromagnetism to a peculiar Sr/Y ordering.

Thermoelectric properties of the layered Pd oxide R_2PdO_4 (R = La, Nd, Sm and Gd)

We prepared polycrystalline samples of R$_2$PdO$_4$ (R = La, Nd, Sm and Gd) using a NaCl-flux technique. The measured resistivity is of the order of 10$^3-10^4$ $Ω$cm at room temperature, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the values reported so far. We further studied the substitution effects of Ce for Nd in Nd$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$PdO$_4$, where the substituted Ce decreases the resistivity and the magnitude of the thermopower. The activation energy gap of 70-80 meV and the effective mass of 15 evaluated from the measured data are suitable for thermoelectric materials, but the mobility of 10$^{-6}$ cm$^2$/Vs is much lower than a typical value of 1-10 cm$^2$/Vs for other thermoelectric oxides.

CaCu_3Ti_4O_12/CaTiO_3 Composite Dielectrics: A Ba/Pb-free Ceramics with High Dielectric Constants

We have measured dielectric properties of Ca$_{1+x}$Cu$_{3-x}$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.9 and 3), and have found that Ca$_2$Cu$_2$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (a composite of CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ and CaTiO$_3$) exhibits a high dielectric constant of 1800 with a low dissipation factor of 0.02 below 100 kHz from 220 to 300 K. These are comparable to (or even better than) those of the Pb/Ba-based ceramics, which could be attributed to a barrier layer of CaTiO$_3$ on the surface of the CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ grains. The composite dielectric ceramics reported here are environmentally benign as they do not contain Ba/Pb.

Pressure/temperature/substitution-induced melting of A-site charge disproportionation in Bi_(1-x)La_(x)NiO_3 (0 =< x =< 0.5)

Metal-insulator transitions strongly coupled with lattice were found in Bi1-xLaxNiO3. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction revealed that pressure (P ~ 3 GPa, T = 300 K), temperature (T ~ 340 K, x = 0.05), and La-substitution (x ~ 0.075, T = 300 K) caused the similar structural change from a triclinic (insulating) to an orthorhombic (metallic) symmetry, suggesting melting of the A-site charge disproportionation. Comparing crystal structure and physical properties with the other ANiO3 series, an electronic state of the metallic phase can be described as [A3+Ld, Ni2+L1-d], where a ligand-hole L contributes to a conductivity. We depicted a schematic P-T phase diagram of BiNiO3 including a critical point (3 GPa, 300 K) and an inhomogeneous region, which implies universality of ligand-hole dynamics in ANiO3 (A = Bi, Pr, Nd,...).

Large dielectric constant and giant nonlinear conduction in the organic conductor theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2CsZn(SCN)_4

The dielectric constant and ac conductivity have been measured for the layered organic conductor theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2CsZn(SCN)_4 along the out-of-plane direction, which show a relaxation behavior similar to those in the charge-density-wave conductor. Most unexpectedly, they exhibit a large bias dependence with a hysteresis, and changes in magnitude by 100-1000 times at a threshold. These findings are very similar to the collective excitation of the charge density wave. theta-$(BEDT-TTF)_2CsZn(SCN)_4 has collective excitations associated with charge ordering, though it shows no clear indication of long range order.

Thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides measured by the Harman method

In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO$_2$ block) dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure.

A novel heavy-fermion state in CaCu_3Ru_4O12

We have measured susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and thermopower of CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$ and CaCu$_{3-y}$Mn$_y$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$, and have found that CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ can be regarded as a heavy-fermion oxide in d-electron systems. The Kondo temperature is near 200 K, and the susceptibility (1.4$\times10^{-3}$ emu/Cu mol) and the electron specific heat coefficient (28 mJ/Cu molK$^2$) are moderately enhanced. The resistivity is proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures, and satisfies the Kadowaki-Woods relation. The heavy-fermion state comes from the interaction between the localized moment of Cu 3d and the conduction electron of Ru 4d. An insulator-metal transition occurs between $x=1.5$ and 4 in CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$, which can be regarded as a transition from magnetic insulator to heavy-fermion metal.

Universal charge transport of the Mn oxides in the high temperature limit

We have found that various Mn oxides have the universal resistivity and thermopower in the high temperature limit. The resistivities and thermopowers of all the samples go toward constant values of 7$\pm$1 m$Ω$cm and $-79\pm$3 $μ$V/K, which are independent of carrier density and crystal structures. We propose that the electric conduction occurs in a highly localized way in the high temperature limit, where the exchange of entropy and charge occurs in the neighboring Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions.

Dielectric responses of the layered cobalt oxysulfide Sr_2Cu_2CoO_2S_2 with CoO_2 square-planes

We have studied the dielectric responses of the layered cobalt oxysulfide Sr$_2$Cu$_2$CoO$_2$S$_2$ with the CoO$_2$ square-planes. With decreasing temperature below the Néel temperature, the resistivity increases like a semiconductor, and the thermopower decreases like a metal. The dielectric constant is highly dependent on temperature, and the dielectric relaxation is systematically changed with temperature, which is strongly correlated to the magnetic states. These behaviors suggest that carriers distributed homogeneously in the paramagnetic state at high temperatures are expelled from the antiferromagnetically ordered spin domain below the Néel temperature.

Effects of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t^{\prime}$ on the electronic structure of cuprates

Photoemission spectra of underdoped and lightly-doped Bi$_{2-z}$Pb$_z$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}${\it R}$_{x}$Cu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ ($R=$ Pr, Er) (BSCCO) have been measured and compared with those of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). The lower-Hubbard band of the insulating BSCCO, like Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, shows a stronger dispersion than La$_2$CuO$_4$ from ${\bf k}\sim$($π/2,π/2$) to $\sim$($π,0$). The flat band at ${\bf k}\sim$($π,0$) is found generally deeper in BSCCO. These observations together with the Fermi-surface shapes and the chemical potential shifts indicate that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $|t^{\prime}|$ of the single-band model is larger in BSCCO than in LSCO and that $|t^{\prime}|$ rather than the super-exchange $J$ influences the pseudogap energy scale.

Metal-insulator transition in Ca_{1-x}Li_xPd_3O_4

Metal-insulator transition in Ca_{1-x}Li_xPd_3O_4 has been studied through charge transport measurements. The resistivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and the Hall coefficient are consistently explained in terms of a simple one-band picture, where a hole with a moderately enhanced mass is itinerant three-dimensionally. Contrary to the theoretical prediction [Phys. Rev. B62, 13426 (2000)], CaPd_3O_4 is unlikely to be an excitonic insulator, and holds a finite carrier concentration down to 4.2 K. Thus the metal-insulator transition in this system is basically driven by localization effects.

Unconventional magnetic transition and transport behavior in Na0.75CoO2

Here we report an unconventional magnetic and transport phenomenon in a layered cobalt oxide, NaxCoO2. Only for x = 0.75, a magnetic transition of the second order was clearly detected at Tm ~ 22 K where an apparent specific-heat jump, an onset of extremely small spontaneous magnetization, and a kink in resistivity came in. Moreover large positive magnetoresistance effect was observed below Tm. These features of the transition strongly indicate the appearance of an unusual electronic state that may be attributed to the strongly-correlated electrons in Na0.75CoO2.

Anomalous Pd substitution effects in the thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Pd_xO_4

We prepared a set of polycrystalline samples of the thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Pd_xO_4 (x= 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2), and investigated the Pd substitution effects on transport phenomena. The effects are so drastic that only 5-10% Pd ions reduce the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient to one-third of the values for x=0, and increase the magnitude of the Hall coefficient by three times. A semi-quantitative analysis has revealed that the x=0.2 sample has much smaller effective mass and carrier concentration than the x=0.05 sample. This is difficult to explain within a rigid-band picture, and is qualitatively consistent with a strong-correlation picture applied to the Ce-based heavy fermion systems.

Universality of the Electronic Structure from a Half Filled CuO_2 Plane

We present angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from insulating A_2CuO_2X_2 (A=Sr, Ca; X=Cl, Br), Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2, and Bi_2Sr_2MCu_2O_8 (M=Er, Dy) single crystals which illustrate that the low energy electronic structure of the half-filled cuprates are independent of the apical atom. By performing a photon energy dependent study on Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2 we are able to distinguish between features which are intrinsic and those which are a result of the photoemission matrix elements. We find that the dispersion is independent of photon energy, while an asymmetry in the electron occupation probability across the antiferromagnetic zone boundary is robust to variations in photon energy. Finally, we show that the d-wave-like dispersion which exists in the insulator along the antiferromagnetic zone boundary does not precisely fit the simple d-wave functional form near the nodal direction.
