Hopf bifurcation and stochastic spiking in an antiferromagnetic FitzHugh--Nagumo normal form

Antiferromagnets offer ultrafast, stray-field-free dynamics that are attractive for neuromorphic spintronic devices. Here we analyze an antiferromagnetic spin-Hall nano-oscillator in the overdamped regime and derive a reduced set of equations for the N\'eel-vector dynamics constrained to the unit sphere. For spin polarization along the easy axis, the model reduces to an asymmetric rotator, for which analytic solutions and the associated spin-pumping signal are obtained in selected limits. We further show that near a suitable operating point, the projected dynamics can be transformed into a local FitzHugh-Nagumo normal form. The resulting mapping identifies the effective fast variable, recovery variable, bias current, and Hopf condition in terms of magnetic material parameters. We finally extend the reduced model to an It\^o stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo equation driven by spin-pumping input and additive thermal or electronic fluctuations. The stochastic phase portrait shows that the deterministic nullcline geometry organizes noisy spike cycles and produces controlled spike-time variability. These results provide a minimal analytic framework for AFM-based spiking-neuron elements and suggest design criteria for future neuromorphic spintronic devices.

Hybrid quantum-classical chaotic NEMS

We present an exactly solvable model of a hybrid quantum-classical system of a Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center spin (quantum spin) coupled to a nanocantilever (classical) and analyze the enforcement of the regular or chaotic classical dynamics onto the quantum spin dynamics. The main problem we focus in this paper is whether the classical dynamical chaos may induce chaotic effects in the quantum spin dynamics or not. We explore several characteristic criteria of the quantum chaos, such as quantum Poincaré recurrences, generation of coherence and energy level distribution and observe interesting chaotic effects in the spin dynamics. Dynamical chaos imposed in the cantilever dynamics through the kicking pulses induces the stochastic dynamics on the quantum subsystem. We consider a quantum system of two and three levels and show that in a two-level case, type of stochasticity is not conforming all the characteristic features of the quantum chaos and is distinct from it. We also explore the effect of quantum feedback on dynamics of the cantilever and the entire system.

Generation of coherence in an exactly solvable nonlinear nanomechanical system

This study is focused on the quantum dynamics of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center coupled to a nonlinear, periodically driven mechanical oscillator. For a continuous periodic driving that depends on the position of the oscillator, the mechanical motion is described by Mathieu elliptic functions. This solution is employed to study the dynamics of the quantum spin system including environmental effects and to evaluate the purity and the von Neumann entropy of the NV-spin. The unitary generation of coherence is addressed. We observe that the production of coherence through a unitary transformation depends on whether the system is prepared initially in mixed state. Production of coherence is efficient when the system initially is prepared in the region of the separatrix (i.e., the region where classical systems exhibit dynamical chaos). From the theory of dynamical chaos, we know that phase trajectories of the system passing through the homoclinic tangle have limited memory, and therefore the information about the initial conditions is lost. We proved that quantum chaos and diminishing of information about the mixed initial state favors the generation of quantum coherence through the unitary evolution. We introduced quantum distance from the homoclinic tangle and proved that for the initial states permitting efficient generation of coherence, this distance is minimal.

Magnetic field tuning of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity

We detail the influence of a magnetic field on exciton-polaritons inside a semiconductor microcavity. Magnetic field can be used as a tuning parameter for exciton and photon resonances. We discuss the change of the exciton energy, the oscillator strength and redistribution of the polariton density along the dispersion curves due to the magnetically-induced detuning. We have observed that field-induced shrinkage of the exciton wave function has a direct influence not only on the exciton oscillator strength, which is observed to increase with the magnetic field, but also on the polariton linewidth. We discuss the effect of the Zeeman splitting on polaritons which magnitude changes with the exciton Hopfield coefficient and can be modelled by independent coupling of the two spin components of excitons with cavity photons.

Magnetospectroscopy of symmetric and anti-symmetric states in double quantum wells

The experimental results obtained for the magneto-transport in the InGaAs/InAlAs double quantum wells (DQW) structures of two different shapes of wells are reported. The beating-effect occurred in the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations was observed for both types of the structures at low temperatures in the parallel transport when magnetic field was perpendicular to the layers. An approach to the calculation of the Landau levels energies for DQW structures was developed and then applied to the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data related to the beating-effect. We also argue that in order to account for the observed magneto-transport phenomena (SdH and Integer Quantum Hall effect), one should introduce two different quasi-Fermi levels characterizing two electron sub-systems regarding symmetry properties of their states, symmetric and anti-symmetric ones which are not mixed by electron-electron interaction.

On the environmental decoherence and spin interference in mesoscopic loop structures

Mechanisms of 'environmental decoherence' such as surface scattering, Elliot-Yafet process and precession mechanisms, as well as their influence on the spin phase relaxation are considered and compared. It is shown that the 'spin ballistic' regime is possible, when the phase relaxation length for the spin part of the wave function (WF)is much greater than the phase relaxation length for the 'orbital part'. In the presence of an additional magnetic field, the spin part of the electron's WF acquires a phase shift due to additional spin precession about that field. If the structure length is chosen to be greater than the phase relaxation length for the 'orbital part' and less than the phase relaxation length for the spin part of WF, it is possible to 'wash out' the quantum interference related to the phase coherence of the 'orbital part' of the WF, retaining at the same time that related to the phase coherence of the spin part and, hence, to reveal corresponding conductance oscillations.

Reconstruction of Quantum Well Potentials via the Intertwining Operator Technique

One of the most important issues of quantum engineering is the construction of low-dimensional structures possessing desirable properties. For example, in different areas of possible applications of the structures containing quantum wells (QW), there is need to have QW energy spectrum, which is predetermined. Then the following question arises: can one reconstruct the shape of QW which supports this spectrum? We outline the possible strategy of the QW potential shape reconstruction, if the spectrum of QW is given in advance. The proposed approach is based on the combination of different techniques such as Inverse Scattering Problem Method, Darboux and Liouville transformation. It enables to take into account the space-variable dependent effective mass of charge carriers and allows the kinetic energy operator to be of non-Hermitian as well as Hermitian form. The proposed technique allows to construct phase-equivalent potentials, to add the new bounded states to (or remove some of them from) the spectrum supported by an initial potential and provides a systematic procedure for generating new exactly solvable models.
