Multi-scale semi-Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann method

We present a multi-scale lattice Boltzmann scheme, which adaptively refines particles' velocity space. Different velocity sets, i.e., higher- and lower-order lattices, are consistently and efficiently coupled, allowing us to use the higher-order lattice only when and where needed. This includes regions of either high Mach number or high Knudsen number. The coupling procedure of different lattices consists of either projection of the moments of the higher-order lattice onto the lower-order lattice or lifting of the lower-order lattice to the higher-order velocity space. Both lifting and projection are local operations, which enable a flexible adaptive velocity set. The proposed scheme can be formulated both in a static and an optimal, co-moving reference frame, in the spirit of the recently introduced Particles on Demand method. The multi-scale scheme is first validated through a convected athermal vortex and also studied in a jet flow setup. The performance of the proposed scheme is further investigated through the shock structure problem and a high Knudsen Couette flow, typical examples of highly non-equilibrium flows in which the order of the velocity set plays a decisive role. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-scale scheme can operate accurately, with flexibility in terms of the underlying models and with reduced computational requirements.

Extended Lattice Boltzmann Model for Gas Dynamics

We propose a two-population lattice Boltzmann model on standard lattices for the simulation of compressible flows. The model is fully on-lattice and uses the single relaxation time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equations along with appropriate correction terms to recover the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. The accuracy and performance of the model are analyzed through simulations of compressible benchmark cases including Sod shock tube, sound generation in shock-vortex interaction and compressible decaying turbulence in a box with eddy shocklets. It is demonstrated that the present model provides an accurate representation of compressible flows, even in the presence of turbulence and shock waves.

Extended Lattice Boltzmann Model

Conventional lattice Boltzmann models for the simulation of fluid dynamics are restricted by an error in the stress tensor that is negligible only for vanishing flow velocity and at a singular value of the temperature. To that end, we propose a unified formulation that restores Galilean invariance and isotropy of the stress tensor by introducing an extended equilibrium. This modification extends lattice Boltzmann models to simulations with higher values of the flow velocity and can be used at temperatures that are higher than the lattice reference temperature, which enhances computational efficiency by decreasing the number of required time steps. Furthermore, the extended model remains valid also for stretched lattices, which are useful when flow gradients are predominant in one direction. The model is validated by simulations of two- and three-dimensional benchmark problems, including the double shear layer flow, the decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence, the laminar boundary layer over a flat plate and the turbulent channel flow.

Reactive mixtures with the lattice Boltzmann model

A new lattice Boltzmann model for reactive ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model is an extension to reactive flows of the recently proposed multi-component lattice Boltzmann model for compressible ideal gas mixtures with Stefan-Maxwell diffusion for species interaction. First, the kinetic model for the Stefan--Maxwell diffusion is enhanced to accommodate a source term accounting the change of the mixture composition due to chemical reaction. Second, by including the heat of formation in the energy equation, the thermodynamic consistency of the underlying compressible lattice Boltzmann model for momentum and energy allows a realization of the energy and temperature change due to chemical reactions. This obviates the need for ad-hoc modelling with source terms for temperature or heat. Both parts remain consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy. The proposed model uses the standard three-dimensional lattices and is validated with a set of benchmarks including laminar burning speed in the hydrogen-air mixture and circular expanding premixed flame.

Consistent lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent mixtures

A new lattice Boltzmann model for multicomponent ideal gas mixtures is presented. The model development consists of two parts. First, a new kinetic model for Stefan- Maxwell diffusion amongst the species is proposed and realized as a lattice Boltzmann equation on the standard discrete velocity set. Second, a compressible lattice Boltzmann model for the momentum and energy of the mixture is established. Both parts are consistently coupled through mixture composition, momentum, pressure, energy and enthalpy whereby a passive scalar advection-diffusion coupling is obviated, unlike in previous approaches. The proposed model is realized on the standard three-dimensional lattices and is validated with a set of benchmarks highlighting various physical aspects of compressible mixtures. Stefan-Maxwell diffusion is tested against experiment and theory of uphill diffusion of argon and methane in a ternary mixture with hydrogen. The speed of sound is measured in various binary and ternary compositions. We further validate the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coupling with hydrodynamics by simulating diffusion in opposed jets and the three-dimensional Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of shear layers in a two-component mixture. Apart from the multicomponent compressible mixture, the proposed lattice Boltzmann model also provides an extension of the lattice Boltzmann equation to the compressible flow regime on the standard three-dimensional lattice.

Particles-on-Demand for Kinetic Theory

A novel formulation of fluid dynamics as a kinetic theory with tailored, on-demand constructed particles removes any restrictions on Mach number and temperature as compared to its predecessors, the lattice Boltzmann methods and their modifications. In the new kinetic theory, discrete particles are determined by a rigorous limit process which avoids ad hoc assumptions about their velocities. Classical benchmarks for incompressible and compressible flows demonstrate that the proposed discrete-particles kinetic theory opens up an unprecedented wide domain of applications for computational fluid dynamics.

Beyond Navier--Stokes equations: Capillarity of ideal gas

The system of Navier--Stokes--Fourier equations is one of the most celebrated systems of equations in modern science. It describes dynamics of fluids in the limit when gradients of density, velocity and temperature are sufficiently small, and loses its applicability when the flux becomes so non-equilibrium that the changes of velocity, density or temperature on the length compatible with the mean free path are non-negligible. The question is: how to model such fluxes? This problem is still open. (Despite the fact that the first `final equations of motion' modified for analysis of thermal creep in rarefied gas were proposed by Maxwell in 1879.) There are, at least, three possible answers: (i) use molecular dynamics with individual particles, (ii) use kinetic equations, like Boltzmann's equation, or (iii) find a new system of equations for description of fluid dynamics with better accounting of non-equilibrium effects. These three approaches work at different scales. We explore the third possibility using the recent findings of capillarity of internal layers in ideal gases and of saturation effect in dissipation (there is a limiting attenuation rate for very short waves in ideal gas and it cannot increase infinitely). One candidate equation is discussed in more detail, the Korteweg system proposed in 1901. The main ideas and approaches are illustrated by a kinetic system for which the problem of reduction of kinetics to fluid dynamics is analytically solvable.

Grid refinement for entropic lattice Boltzmann models

We propose a novel multi-domain grid refinement technique with extensions to entropic incompressible, thermal and compressible lattice Boltzmann models. Its validity and accuracy are accessed by comparison to available direct numerical simulation and experiment for the simulation of isothermal, thermal and viscous supersonic flow. In particular, we investigate the advantages of grid refinement for the set-ups of turbulent channel flow, flow past a sphere, Rayleigh-Benard convection as well as the supersonic flow around an airfoil. Special attention is payed to analyzing the adaptive features of entropic lattice Boltzmann models for multi-grid simulations.

Entropic Lattice Boltzmann Method for Moving and Deforming Geometries in Three Dimensions

Entropic lattice Boltzmann methods have been developed to alleviate intrinsic stability issues of lattice Boltzmann models for under-resolved simulations. Its reliability in combination with moving objects was established for various laminar benchmark flows in two dimensions in our previous work Dorschner et al. [11] as well as for three dimensional one-way coupled simulations of engine-type geometries in Dorschner et al. [12] for flat moving walls. The present contribution aims to fully exploit the advantages of entropic lattice Boltzmann models in terms of stability and accuracy and extends the methodology to three-dimensional cases including two-way coupling between fluid and structure, turbulence and deformable meshes. To cover this wide range of applications, the classical benchmark of a sedimenting sphere is chosen first to validate the general two-way coupling algorithm. Increasing the complexity, we subsequently consider the simulation of a plunging SD7003 airfoil at a Reynolds number of Re = 40000 and finally, to access the model's performance for deforming meshes, we conduct a two-way coupled simulation of a self-propelled anguilliform swimmer. These simulations confirm the viability of the new fluid-structure interaction lattice Boltzmann algorithm to simulate flows of engineering relevance.

Non-Perturbative Hydrodynamic Limits

We introduce non-perturbative analytical techniques for the derivation of the hydrodynamic manifolds from kinetic equations. The new approach is analogous to the Schwinger-Dyson equation of quantum field theories, and its derivation is demonstrated with the construction of the exact diffusion manifold for a model kinetic equation. The novel approach is superior to the classical Chapman-Enskog method.

Enhanced lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook method for fluid dynamics simulation

A generalization of the lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (LBGK) model for the simulation of hydrodynamics is presented, which takes into account the difference and the frame-independence of the relaxation of non-hydrodynamic modes. The present model retains the computationally efficient standard LBGK form with the generalized equilibrium explicitly derived. The two-dimensional realization on the standard lattice is discussed in detail. Performance of the model is assessed through a shear layer simulation and enhanced stability and accuracy with respect to the standard LBGK are reported. The results demonstrate that the present model is a useful upgrade of the standard LBGK without compromising its computational efficiency and accuracy.

Comment on the paper Li-Shi Luo, Wei Liao, Xingwang Chen, Yan Peng and Wei Zhang, Numerics of the lattice Boltzmann method: Effects of collision models on the lattice Boltzmann simulations, Physical Review E 83, 056710 (2011)

Critical comments on the entropic lattice Boltzmann equation (ELBE), by Li-Shi Luo, Wei Liao, Xingwang Chen, Yan Peng and Wei Zhang, Physical Review E 83, 056710 (2011), are based on simulations which make use of a model that, despite being called ELBE by the authors, is in fact fully equivalent to the standard lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation. As a result, the conclusion of Luo et al on ELBE is circular, hence devoid of scientific bearing.

Exact linear hydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation

Exact (to all orders in Knudsen number) equations of linear hydrodynamics are derived from the Boltzmann kinetic equation with the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision integral. The exact hydrodynamic equations are cast in a form which allows us to immediately prove their hyperbolicity, stability, and existence of an H-theorem.

Method of invariant grid for model reduction of hydrogen combustion

The Method of Invariant Grid (MIG) is a model reduction technique based on the concept of slow invariant manifold (SIM), which approximates the SIM by a set of nodes in the concentration space (invariant grid). In the present work, the MIG is applied to a realistic combustion system: An adiabatic constant volume reactor with H2-air at stoichiometric proportions. By considering the thermodynamic Lyapunov function of the detailed kinetic system, the notion of the quasi-equilibrium manifold (QEM) is adopted as an initial approximation to the SIM. One- and two-dimensional discrete approximations of the QEM (quasi-equilibrium grids) are constructed and refined via the MIG to obtain the corresponding invariant grids. The invariant grids are tabulated and used to integrate the reduced system. Excellent agreements between the reduced and detailed kinetics is demonstrated.

Lattice Boltzmann method for thermal flow simulation on standard lattices

The recently introduced consistent lattice Boltzmann model with energy conservation [S. Ansumali, I.V. Karlin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 260605 (2005)] is extended to the simulation of thermal flows on standard lattices. The two-dimensional thermal model on the standard square lattice with nine velocities is developed and validated in the thermal Couette and Rayleigh-Bénard natural convection problems.

Quasi Equilibrium Grid Algorithm: geometric construction for model reduction

The Method of Invariant Grid (MIG) is an iterative procedure for model reduction in chemical kinetics which is based on the notion of Slow Invariant Manifold (SIM) [1-4]. Important role, in that method, is played by the initial grid which, once refined, gives a description of the invariant manifold: the invariant grid. A convenient way to get a first approximation of the SIM is given by the Spectral Quasi Equilibrium Manifold (SQEM) [1-2]. In the present paper, a flexible numerical method to construct the discrete analog of a Quasi Equilibrium Manifold, in any dimension, is presented. That object is named Quasi Equilibrium Grid (QEG), while the procedure Quasi Equilibrium Grid Algorithm. Extensions of the QEM notion are also suggested. The QEG is a numerical tool which can be used to find a grid-based approximation for the locus of minima of a convex function under some linear constraints. The method is validated by construction of one and two-dimensional grids for model hydrogen oxidation reaction.
