Search for neutrinoless double beta decay with enriched 76Ge in Gran Sasso 1990-2003

The results of the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment which searches with 11 kg of enriched 76Ge for double beta decay in the GRAN Sasso underground laboratory are presented for the full running period August 1990 - May 2003. The duty cycle of the experiment was ~80%, the collected statistics is 71.7 kg y. The background achieved in the energy region of the Q value for double beta decay is 0.11 events/ kg y keV. The two-neutrino accompanied half-life is determined on the basis of more than 100 000 events. The confidence level for the neutrinoless signal has been improved to 4.2 sigma.

Search For Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay With Enriched 76Ge 1990-2003 -- HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW-Experiment

The HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment, which is the most sensitive double beta decay experiment since ten years has been regularly continued until end of November 2003. An analysis of the data has been performed already until May 20, 2003. The experiment yields now, on a 4.2 sigma level, evidence for lepton number violation and proves that the neutrino is a Majorana particle. It further shows that neutrino masses are degenerate. In addition it puts several stringent constraints on other physics beyond the Standard Model. Among others it opens the door to test various supersymmetric theory scenarios, for example it gives the sharpest limit on the parameter lambda'_{111} in the R-parity violating part of the superpotential, and gives information on the splitting of the sneutrino-antisneutrino system. The result from the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment is consistent with recent results from CMB investigations, with high energy cosmic rays, with the result from the g-2 experiment and with recent theoretical work. It is indirectly supported by the analysis of other Ge double beta experiments. Recent criticism of various kind has been shown to be wrong, among others by measurements performed in 2003 with a 214Bi source (226Ra), by simulation of the background in the range of Q_(beta-beta) by GEANT4, and by deeper investigation of statistical features such as sensitivity of peak search, and relevance of width of window of analysis.

Data Acquisition and Analysis of the 76Ge Double Beta Experiment in Gran Sasso 1990-2003

Data acquisition in a long running underground experiment has its specific experimental challenges, concerning data acquisition, stability of the experiment and background reduction. These problems are addressed here for the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment, which collected data in the period August 1990 - May 2003. The measurement and the analysis of the data is presented. The duty cycle of the experiment was ~80%, the collected statistics is 71.7 kgy. The background achieved in the energy region of the Q value for double beta decay is 0.11 events/kg y keV. The two-neutrino accompanied half-life is determined on the basis of more than 100 000 events. The confidence level for the neutrinoless signal has been improved to a 4 sigma level.

Critical View to "The IGEX neutrinoless double beta decay experiment...." published in Phys. Rev. D, Volume 65 (2002) 092007

Recently a paper entitled ``The Igex 76Ge Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Experiment: Prospects for Next Generation Experiments'' has been published in Phys. Rev. D 65 (2002) 092007. In view of the recently reported evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay (KK-Evid01,KK02-Found,KK02-PN) it is particularly unfortunate that the IGEX paper is rather incomplete in its presentation. We would like to point out in this Comment that and why it would be highly desirable to make more details about the experimental conditions and the analysis of IGEX available. We list some of the main points, which require further explanation. We also point to an arithmetic mistake in the analysis of the IGEX data, the consequence of which are too high half life limits given in that paper.

Support of Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Indirect support for the evidence of neutrinoless double beta decay reported recently, is obtained by analysis of other Ge double beta experiments, which yield independent information on the background in the region of Q_(beta-beta). Some statistical features as well as background simulations with GEANT 4 of the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment are discussed which disprove recent criticism.

First 10 kg of Naked Germanium Detectors in Liquid Nitrogen installed in the GENIUS-Test-Facility

The first four naked high purity Germanium detectors were installed successfully in liquid nitrogen in the GENIUS-Test-Facility (GENIUS-TF) in the GRAN SASSO Underground Laboratory on May 5, 2003. This is the first time ever that this novel technique aiming at extreme background reduction in search for rare decays is going to be tested underground. First operational parameters are presented.

Measurement of the 214Bi spectrum in the energy region around the Q-value of 76Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay

In this work we present the results obtained measuring the 214Bi spectrum from a 226Ra source with a high purity germanium detector. Our attention was mostly focused on the energy region around the Q-value of 76Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay (2039.006 keV). The results of this measurement are strongly related to the first indication for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge, given by a recent analysis \cite{Evidence,KK02-PN,KK02-Found,KK-BigArt02} of the data collected during ten years of measurements from the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment.

Status of Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

The present experimental status in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay is reviewed, with emphasis on the first indication for neutrinoless double beta decay found in the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment, giving first evidence for lepton number violation and a Majorana nature of the neutrinos. Future perspectives of the field are briefly outlined.

First Results from the HDMS experiment in the Final Setup

The Heidelberg Dark Matter Search (HDMS) is an experiment designed for the search for WIMP dark matter. It is using a special configuration of Ge detectors, to efficiently reduce the background in the low-energy region below 100 keV. After one year of running the HDMS detector prototype in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, the inner crystal of the detector has been replaced with a HPGe crystal of enriched $^{73}$Ge. The final setup started data taking in Gran Sasso in August 2000. The performance and the first results of the measurement with the final setup are discussed.

Search for Cold Dark Matter and Solar Neutrinos with GENIUS and GENIUS-TF

The new project GENIUS will cover a wide range of the parameter space of predictions of SUSY for neutralinos as cold dark matter. Further it has the potential to be a real-time detector for low-energy (pp and 7Be) solar neutrinos. A GENIUS Test Facility has just been funded and will come into operation by end of 2002.

Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

The data of the Heidelberg-Moscow double beta decay experiment for the measuring period August 1990 - May 2000 (54.9813 kg y or 723.44 molyears), published recently, are analyzed using the potential of the Bayesian method for low counting rates. First evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is observed giving first evidence for lepton number violation. The evidence for this decay mode is 97% (2.2σ) with the Bayesian method, and 99.8% c.l. (3.1σ) with the method recommended by the Particle Data Group. The half-life of the process is found with the Bayesian method to be T_{1/2}^{0ν} = (0.8 - 18.3) x 10^{25} y (95% c.l.) with a best value of 1.5 x 10^{25} y. The deduced value of the effective neutrino mass is, with the nuclear matrix elements from [Sta90,Tom91] < m >= (0.11 - 0.56) eV (95% c.l.), with a best value of 0.39 eV. Uncertainties in the nuclear matrix elements may widen the range given for the effective neutrino mass by at most a factor 2. Our observation which at the same time means evidence that the neutrino is a Majorana particle, will be of fundamental importance for neutrino physics. Latest Results from the Heidelberg-Moscow Double Beta Decay Experiment

New results for the double beta decay of 76Ge are presented. They are extracted from Data obtained with the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW, which operates five enriched 76Ge detectors in an extreme low-level environment in the GRAN SASSO. The two neutrino accompanied double beta decay is evaluated for the first time for all five detectors with a statistical significance of 47.7 kg y resulting in a half life of (T_(1/2))^(2nu) = [1.55 +- 0.01 (stat) (+0.19) (-0.15) (syst)] x 10^(21) years. The lower limit on the half-life of the 0nu beta-beta decay obtained with pulse shape analysis is (T_(1/2))^(0_nu) > 1.9 x 10^(25) [3.1 x 10^(25)] years with 90% C.L. (68% C.L.) (with 35.5 kg y). This results in an upper limit of the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 0.35 eV (0.27 eV). No evidence for a Majoron emitting decay mode or for the neutrinoless mode is observed.

Limits on the Majorana neutrino mass in the 0.1 eV range

The Heidelberg-Moscow experiment gives the most stringent limit on the Majorana neutrino mass. After 24 kg yr of data with pulse shape measurements, we set a lower limit on the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay in 76Ge of T_1/2 > 5.7 * 10^{25} yr at 90% C.L., thus excluding an effective Majorana neutrino mass greater than 0.2 eV. This allows to set strong constraints on degenerate neutrino mass models.
