Frequency spectrum of toroidal Alfvén mode in a neutron star with Ferraro's form of nonhomogeneous poloidal magnetic field

Using the energy variational method of magneto-solid-mechanical theory of a perfectly conducting elastic medium threaded by magnetic field, the frequency spectrum of Lorentz-force-driven global torsional nodeless vibrations of a neutron star with Ferraro's form of axisymmetric poloidal nonhomogeneous internal and dipole-like external magnetic field is obtained and compared with that for this toroidal Alfvén mode in a neutron star with homogeneous internal and dipolar external magnetic field. The relevance of considered asteroseismic models to quasi-periodic oscillations of the X-ray flux during the ultra powerful outbursts of SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 is discussed.

Surface response of spherical core-shell structured nanoparticle by optically induced elastic oscillations of soft shell against hard core

The optically induced oscillatory response of a spherical two-component, shell-core structured, nanoparticle by nodeless elastic vibrations of soft peripheral shell against hard and dynamically immobile inner core is considered. The eigenfrequencies of the even-parity, spheroidal and odd-parity torsional vibrational modes trapped in the finite-depth shell are obtained which are of practical interest for modal specification of individual resonances in spectra of resonant scattering of long wavelength electromagnetic waves by ultrafine particles.

Fundamental vibrational mode in a highly inhomogeneous star

The eigenfrequency problem of fundamental vibrational mode in a highly inhomogeneous star, modeled by self-gravitating mass of viscous liquid with singular density at the center, is considered in juxtaposition with that for Kelvin fundamental mode in the liquid star model with uniform density. Particular attention is given to the difference between spectral equations for the frequency and lifetime of f-mode in the singular and homogeneous star models. The newly obtained results are discussed in the context of theoretical asteroseismology of pre-white dwarf stars and stellar cocoons -- spherical gas-dust clouds with dense star-forming core at the center.

Nodeless differentially rotational Alfvén oscillations of crustal solid-state plasma in quaking neutron star

The two-component, core-crust, model of a neutron star with homogenous internal and dipolar external magnetic field is studied responding to quake-induced perturbation by substantially nodeless differentially rotational Alfvén oscillations of the perfectly conducting crustal matter about axis of fossil magnetic field frozen in the immobile core. The energy variational method of the magneto-solid-mechanical theory of a viscoelastic perfectly conducting medium pervaded by magnetic field is utilized to compute the frequency and lifetime of nodeless torsional vibrations of crustal solid-state plasma about the dipole magnetic-moment axis of the star. It is found that obtained two-parametric spectral formula for the frequency of this toroidal Alfven mode provides fairly accurate account of rapid oscillations of the X-ray flux during the flare of SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14, supporting the investigated conjecture that these quasi-periodic oscillations owe its origin to axisymmetric torsional oscillations predominately driven by Lorentz force of magnetic field stresses in the finite-depth crustal region of the above magnetars.

Torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking neutron star restored by combined forces of shear elastic and magnetic field stresses

Within the framework of Newtonian magneto-solid-mechanics, relying on equations appropriate for a perfectly conducting elastic continuous medium threaded by a uniform magnetic field, the asteroseismic model of a neutron star undergoing axisymmetric global torsional nodeless vibrations under the combined action of Hooke's elastic and Lorentz magnetic forces is considered with emphasis on a toroidal Alfvén mode of differentially rotational vibrations about the dipole magnetic moment axis of the star. The obtained spectral equation for frequency is applied to $\ell$-pole identification of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux during the giant flares of SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14. Our calculations suggest that detected QPOs can be consistently interpreted, within the framework of this model, as produced by global torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking magnetar if they are considered to be restored by the joint action of bulk forces of shear elastic and magnetic field stresses.

Elasticity of nuclear medium as a principal macrodynamical promoter of electric dipole pygmy resonance

Motivated by arguments of the nuclear core-layer model formulated in [S.I. Bastrukov, J.A. Maruhn, Z.Phys. A 335 (1990) 139], the macroscopic excitation mechanism of electric pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) is considered as owing its origin to perturbation-induced effective decomposition of nucleus into two spherical domains - undisturbed inner region treated as static core and dynamical layer undergoing elastic shear vibrations. The focus is placed on the imprinted in the core-layer model mechanism of emergence of the low-energy dipole electric resonant excitation as Goldstone soft mode of translation layer-against-core oscillations. To accentuate this attitude we regain the obtained in the above paper spectral equation for the frequency of spheroidal elastic vibrations trapped in the finite-depth layer, but by working from canonical equation of elastic dynamics of continuous medium. The obtained analytic equations for the frequency of dipole vibrational state in question and its excitation strength exhibit fundamental character of this soft dipole mode of nuclear resonant response.

Torsional shear oscillations in the neutron star crust driven by restoring force of elastic stresses

We present several exact solutions of the eigenfrequency problem for torsional shear vibrations in homogeneous and non-homogeneous models of the neutron star crust governed by canonical equation of solid mechanics with a restoring force of Hookean elasticity. Particular attention is given to regime of large lengthscale nodeless axisymmetric differentially rotational oscillations which are treated in spherical polar coordinates reflecting real geometry of the neutron star crust. Highlighted is the distinction between analytic forms and numerical estimates of the frequency, computed as a function of multipole degree of nodeless torsional oscillations and fractional depth of the crust, caused by different boundary conditions imposed on the toroidal field of material displacements. The relevance of considered models to quasiperiodic oscillations, recently detected during the flare of SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14, is discussed.
