Correlations in non-equilibrium Luttinger liquid and singular Fredholm determinants

We study interaction-induced correlations in Luttinger liquid with multiple Fermi edges. Many-particle correlation functions are expressed in terms of Fredholm determinants ${\rm det}(1+\hat{A}\hat{B})$, where $A(ε)$ and $B(t)$ have multiple discontinuities in energy and time spaces. Such determinants are a generalization of Toeplitz determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. We propose a general asymptotic formula for this class of determinants and provide analytical and numerical support to this conjecture. This allows us to establish non-equilibrium power-law singularities of many-particle correlation functions. As an example, we calculate a two-particle distribution function characterizing correlations between left- and right-moving fermions that have left the interaction region.

Dynamics of waves in 1D electron systems: Density oscillations driven by population inversion

We explore dynamics of a density pulse induced by a local quench in a one-dimensional electron system. The spectral curvature leads to an "overturn" (population inversion) of the wave. We show that beyond this time the density profile develops strong oscillations with a period much larger than the Fermi wave length. The effect is studied first for the case of free fermions by means of direct quantum simulations and via semiclassical analysis of the evolution of Wigner function. We demonstrate then that the period of oscillations is correctly reproduced by a hydrodynamic theory with an appropriate dispersive term. Finally, we explore the effect of different types of electron-electron interaction on the phenomenon. We show that sufficiently strong interaction [$U(r)\gg 1/mr^2$ where $m$ is the fermionic mass and $r$ the relevant spatial scale] determines the dominant dispersive term in the hydrodynamic equations. Hydrodynamic theory reveals crucial dependence of the density evolution on the relative sign of the interaction and the density perturbation.

Metal-insulator transition in 2D random fermion systems of chiral symmetry classes

Field-theoretical approach to Anderson localization in 2D disordered fermionic systems of chiral symmetry classes (BDI, AIII, CII) is developed. Important representatives of these symmetry classes are random hopping models on bipartite lattices at the band center. As was found by Gade and Wegner two decades ago within the sigma-model formalism, quantum interference effects in these classes are absent to all orders of perturbation theory. We demonstrate that the quantum localization effects emerge when the theory is treated non-perturbatively. Specifically, they are controlled by topological vortex-like excitations of the sigma models. We derive renormalization group equations including these non-perturbative contributions. Analyzing them, we find that the 2D disordered systems of chiral classes undergo a metal-insulator transition driven by topologically induced Anderson localization. We also show that the Wess-Zumino and Z_2 theta terms on surfaces of 3D topological insulators (in classes AIII and CII, respectively) overpower the vortex-induced localization.

Luttinger liquids with multiple Fermi edges: Generalized Fisher-Hartwig conjecture and numerical analysis of Toeplitz determinants

It has been shown that solutions of a number of many-body problems out of equilibrium can be expressed in terms of Toeplitz determinants with Fisher-Hartwig (FH) singularities. In the present paper, such Toeplitz determinants are studied numerically. Results of our numerical calculations fully agree with the FH conjecture in an extended form that includes a summation over all FH representations (corresponding to different branches of the logarithms). As specific applications, we consider problems of Fermi edge singularity and tunneling spectroscopy of Luttinger liquid with multiple-step energy distribution functions, including the case of population inversion. In the energy representation, a sum over FH branches produces power-law singularities at multiple edges.

Many-particle correlations in non-equilibrium Luttinger liquid

We develop an operator-based approach to the problem of Luttinger liquid conductor in a non-equilibrium stationary state. We show that the coherent-state many-body fermionic density matrix as well as all fermionic correlation functions out of equilibrium are given by one-dimensional functional determinants of the Fredholm type. Thus, the model constitutes a remarkable example of a many-body problem where all the correlation functions can be evaluated exactly. On the basis of the general formalism we investigate four-point correlation functions of the fermions coming out of the Luttinger liquid wire. Obtained correlations in the fermionic distribution functions represent the combined effect of interaction and non-equilibrium conditions.

Superconductor-insulator duality for the array of Josephson wires

We propose novel model system for the studies of superconductor-insulator transitions, which is a regular lattice, whose each link consists of Josephson-junction chain of $N \gg 1$ junctions in sequence. The theory of such an array is developed for the case of semiclassical junctions with the Josephson energy $E_J$ large compared to the junctions's Coulomb energy $E_C$. Exact duality transformation is derived, which transforms the Hamiltonian of the proposed model into a standard Hamiltonian of JJ array. The nature of the ground state is controlled (in the absence of random offset charges) by the parameter $q \approx N^2 \exp(-\sqrt{8E_J/E_C})$, with superconductive state corresponding to small $q < q_c $. The values of $q_c$ are calculated for magnetic frustrations $f= 0$ and $f= \frac12$. Temperature of superconductive transition $T_c(q)$ and $q < q_c$ is estimated for the same values of $f$. In presence of strong random offset charges, the T=0 phase diagram is controlled by the parameter $\bar{q} = q/\sqrt{N}$; we estimated critical value $\bar{q}_c$.
