Screening of Coulomb interactions in transition metals

We discuss different methods of calculation of the screened Coulomb interaction $U$ in transition metals and compare the constraint local-density approximation (LDA) with the GW approach. We clarify that they offer complementary methods of treating the screening and should serve for different purposes. In the GW method, the renormalization of bare on-site Coulomb interactions between 3d electrons occurs mainly through the screening by the same 3d electrons, treated in the random phase approximation (RPA). The basic difference of the constraint-LDA method is that it deals with the neutral processes, where the Coulomb interactions are additionally screened by the ``excited'' electron, since it continues to stay in the system. This is the main channel of screening by the itinerant ($4sp$) electrons, which is especially strong in the case of transition metals and missing in the GW approach, although the details of this screening may be affected by additional approximations, which typically supplement these two methods. The major drawback of the conventional constraint-LDA method is that it does not allow to treat the energy-dependence of $U$. We propose a promising approximation based on the combination of these two methods. First, we take into account the screening of Coulomb interactions in the 3d-electron-line bands located near the Fermi level by the states from the subspace being orthogonal to these bands, using the constraint-LDA methods. The obtained interactions are further renormalized within the bands near the Fermi level in RPA. This allows the energy-dependent screening by electrons near the Fermi level including the same 3d electrons.

Noncollinear magnetism in distorted perovskite compounds

Using results of the band structure calculations in the local-spin-density approximation we demonstrate how the crystal distortions affect the magnetic structure of orthorhombically distorted perovskites leading to a non-collinear spin arrangement. Our results suggest that the non-collinearity of the spin magnetic moments, being generally small in La$M$O$_3$ series with $M$=Cr-Fe, is large in SrRuO$_3$.

Lattice Distortion and Magnetic Ground State of YTiO$_3$ and LaTiO$_3$

Effects of lattice distortion on the magnetic ground state of YTiO$_3$ and LaiO$_3$ are investigated on the basis accurate tight-binding parametrization of the $t_{2g}$ electronic structure extracted from the local-density approximation. The complexity of these compounds is related with the fact that the $t_{2g}$-level splitting, caused by lattice distortions, is comparable with the energies of superexchange and spin-orbit interactions. Therefore, all these interactions are equally important and should be treated on an equal footing. The Hartree-Fock approximation fails to provide a coherent description simultaneously for YTiO$_3$ and LaTiO$_3$, and it is essential to go beyond.

Optimized Effective Potential for Extended Hubbard Model

Antiferromagnetic and charge ordered Hartree-Fock solutions of the one-band Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsions are exactly mapped onto an auxiliary local Kohn-Sham (KS) problem within a density-functional theory. The mapping provides a new insight into the interpretation of the KS equations. (i) With an appropriate choice of the basic variable, there is a universal form of the KS potential, which is applicable both for the antiferromagnetic and the charge ordered solutions. (ii) The Kohn-Sham and Hartree-Fock eigenvalues are interconnected by a scaling transformation. (iii) The band-gap problem is attributed to the derivative discontinuity of the basic variable as the function of the electron number, rather than a finite discontinuity of the KS potential. (iv) It is argued that the conductivity gap and the energies of spin-wave excitations can be entirely defined by the parameters of the ground state and the KS eigenvalues.

Ferromagnetic zigzag chains and properties of the charge ordered perovskite manganites

The low-temperature properties of the so-called ''charge ordered'' state in 50% doped perovskite manganites are described from the viewpoint of the magnetic spin ordering. In these systems, the zigzag antiferromagnetic ordering, combined with the double-exchange physics, effectively divides the whole sample into the one-dimensional ferromagnetic zigzag chains and results in the anisotropy of electronic properties. The electronic structure of one such chain is described by an effective 3$\times$3 Hamiltonian in the basis of Mn($3de_g$) orbitals. We treat this problem analytically and consider the following properties: (i) the nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions; (ii) the distribution of the Mn($3de_g$) and Mn($4p$) states near the Fermi level, and their contribution to the optical conductivity and the resonant x-ray scattering near the Mn $K$-absorption edge. We argue that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions in the double-exchange limit, combined with the isotropic superexchange interactions, readily explains both the local and the global stability of the zigzag antiferromagnetic state. The two-fold degeneracy of $e_g$ levels plays a very important role in the problem and explains the insulating behavior of the zigzag chain, as well as the appearance of the orbital ordering in the double-exchange model. Importantly, however, the charge ordering itself is expected to play only a minor role and is incompatible with the ferromagnetic coupling within the chain. We also discuss possible effects of the Jahn-Teller distortion and compare the tight-binding picture with results of band structure calculations in the local-spin-density approximation.

Charge Ordering Due to Magnetic Symmetry Breaking

It is argued that both transitions observed in 50%-doped manganites, at the Néel temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) and the so-called charge ordering temperature ($T_{\rm CO}$), are magnetic. $T_{\rm N}$ corresponds to the order-disorder transition, which takes place between ferromagnetic zigzag chains, while the coherent motion of spins within the chains is destroyed only around $T_{\rm CO}$. The magnetic structure realized below $T_{\rm CO}$ is highly anisotropic. It is dressed by the lattice distortion and leads to huge anisotropy of the electronic structure, which explains stability of this state as well as the form of charge-orbital pattern above $T_{\rm N}$. The type of phase transition at $T_{\rm N}$ depends on lattice interactions.

Magnetic Interactions in Transition-Metal Oxides

This a review article, which presents a general framework for the analysis of interatomic magnetic interactions in the spin-density-functional theory, which is based on the magnetic force theorem, make a link with the models for transition-metal oxides, and gives several examples of how this strategy can be used for the analysis of magnetic properties of colossal-magnetoresistive perovskite manganites, double perovskite and pyrochlore compounds.

Paramagnetic State of Degenerate Double Exchange Model: a Non-Local CPA Approach

The off-diagonal disorder caused by random spin orientations in the paramagnetic (PM) state of the double exchange (DE) model is described by using the coherent-potential-approximation (CPA), which is combined with the variational mean-field approach for the Curie temperature (T_C). Our CPA approach is essentially non-local and based on the perturbation theory expansion for the T-matrix with respect to the fluctuations of hoppings from the ''mean values'' specified by matrix elements of the self energy, so that in the first order it becomes identical to the DE theory by de Gennes. The second-order effects, considered in the present work, can be viewed as an extension of this theory. They are not negligible, and lead to a substantial reduction of T_C in the one-orbital case. Even more dramatic changes are expected in the case of orbital degeneracy, when each site of the cubic lattice is represented by two e_g orbitals, which also specify the form of interatomic transfer integrals. Particularly, the existence of two Van Hove singularities in the spectrum of degenerate DE model may lead to the branching of CPA solutions, when the Green function and the self energy become double-valued functions in certain region of the complex plane. Such a behavior can be interpreted as an intrinsic inhomogeneity of the PM state, which consists of two phases characterized by different electronic densities. The phase separation occurs below certain transition temperature, T_P, and naturally explains the appearance of several magnetic transition points, which are frequently seen in manganites.

Effects of Crystal Structure and the On-Site Coulomb Interactions on the Electronic and Magnetic Structure of Pyrochlores $A_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ (A= Y, Gd, and Nd)

Being motivated by recent experimental studies, we investigate magnetic structures of the Mo pyrochlores $A_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ ($A$= Y, Nd, and Gd) and their impact on the electronic properties. The latter are closely related with the behavior of twelve Mo($t_{2g}$) bands, located near the Fermi level and well separated from the rest of the spectrum. We use a mean-field Hartree-Fock approach, which combines fine details of the electronic structure for these bands, extracted from the conventional calculations in the local-density approximation, the spin-orbit interaction, and the on-site Coulomb interactions amongst the Mo(4d) electrons, treated in the most general rotationally invariant form. The Coulomb repulsion U plays a very important role in the problem, and the semi-empirical value U$\sim$1.5-2.5 eV accounts simultaneously for the metal-insulator (M-I) transition, the ferromagnetic (FM) - spin-glass (SG) transition, and for the observed enhancement of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The M-I transition is mainly controlled by $U$. The magnetic structure at the metallic side is nearly collinear FM, due to the double exchange mechanism. The transition into the insulating state is accompanied by the large canting of spin and orbital magnetic moments. The sign of exchange interactions in the insulating state is controlled by the Mo-Mo distances. Smaller distances favor the antiferromagnetic coupling, which preludes the SG behavior in the frustrated pyrochlore lattice. Large AHE is expected in the nearly collinear FM state, near the point of M-I transition, and is related with the unquenched orbital magnetization at the Mo sites. We also predict large magneto-optical effect in the same FM compounds.

The interplay between the half-metallic character of the Mn 3d electronic structure in connection with the local magnetic moment $μ_{Mn}$ and Mn $2p\to 3d$ x-ray emission spectra is discussed.

Magnetic frustrations in the face centered cubic antiferromagnet NiS2

Neutron scattering experiment on NiS2 single crystal revealed a honeycomb pattern of the intensity distribution in reciprocal lattice space (continuous-line structure along the fcc zone boundary) providing the first direct evidence for nearly frustrated antiferromagnetism (AF) on the face centered cubic (fcc) lattice. A small but finite lattice distortion below 30.9 K lifts the degeneracy of the magnetic ground state due to the frustration and eventually result in the coexistence of the type I and the type II AF long range orderings, which are mutually incompatible in the fcc symmetry at higher temperatures.

Low-Temperature Spin Dynamics of Doped Manganites: roles of Mn-t2g and eg and O-2p states

The low-temperature spin dynamics of doped manganites have been analyzed within a tight-binding model, the parameters of which are estimated by mapping the results of ab initio density functional calculations onto the model. This approach is found to provide a good description of the spin dynamics of the doped manganites, observed earlier within the ab initio calculations. Our analysis not only provides some insight into the roles of the eg and the t2g states but also indicates that the oxygen p states play an important role in the spin dynamics. This may cast doubt on the adaptability of the conventional model Hamiltonian approaches to the analysis of spin dynamics of doped manganites.

Intermediate-spin state and properties of LaCoO_3

The electronic structure of the perovskite LaCoO$_3$ for different spin states of Co ions was calculated in the LDA+U approach. The ground state was found to be a nonmagnetic insulator with Co ions in a low-spin state. Somewhat higher in energy we found two intermediate-spin states followed by a high-spin state at significantly higher energy. The calculation results show that Co 3$d$ states of $t_{2g}$ symmetry form narrow bands which could easily localize whilst $e_g$ orbitals, due to their strong hybridization with the oxygen 2$p$ states, form a broad $σ^*$ band. With the increase of temperature which is simulated by the corresponding increase of the lattice parameter, the transition from the low- to intermediate-spin states occurs. This intermediate-spin (occupation $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$) can develop an orbital ordering which can account for the nonmetallic nature of LaCoO$_3$ at 90 K$<$T$<$500 K. Possible explanations of the magnetic behavior and gradual insulating-metal transition are suggested.
