Metastable MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ enabled by magnetic-field-assisted synthesis

Magnetic topological insulators provide a unique platform to explore the interplay between magnetism and topology. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, known for its A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, undergoes a striking transformation when single crystals are grown in an applied magnetic field. Despite retaining the same crystal structure, field-grown MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state with a Curie temperature of $\sim$ 12.5 K, confirmed by magnetization, magnetic torque, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. First-principles calculations support these findings, revealing that magnetic-field-assisted synthesis can effectively reconfigure the ground-state spin order and thereby modify the material's electronic properties, as reflected in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation seen in the magnetic torque.

Pseudo Point Nodal Superconducting Gap in Spin-Triplet UTe$_2$

The unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ represents a rare example of spin-triplet pairing with potentially topologically protected quantum states. However, conflicting reports on its gap structure, particularly regarding point nodes, have hindered understanding of the order parameter symmetry and topological properties. Here we report high-resolution thermal conductivity measurements on high-quality UTe$_2$ single crystals down to ~50 mK that resolve the gap anisotropy through bulk directional transport. The $b$-axis thermal conductivity $κ_b/T$ exhibits negligible residual conductivity as $T \to 0$, and its temperature dependence is consistent with a small superconducting energy gap along the $b$-axis. Under magnetic fields, the residual $κ_b/T$ shows only weak field-induced enhancement. Remarkably, a threshold field emerges at low fields for $H \parallel a$, characterized by a kink that signals a change in quasiparticle transport normal to the field. Below the threshold, $κ_b/T$ remains isotropic for all field orientations, whereas strong anisotropy between transport along and normal to the field develops above it. These signatures strongly suggest that UTe$_2$ exhibits a fully gapped state with a pseudo point-nodal structure, where gap minima approach but never reach zero. We estimate the minimal gap $Δ_{min}/Δ_0 \sim 0.1$ along the $b$-axis, where $Δ_0$ is the characteristic superconducting gap. This unusual gap structure provides crucial insights into the pairing mechanism and topology of this spin-triplet superconductor and excludes non-unitary mixing of pairing symmetries.

Hydrogen and Deuterium Tunneling in Niobium

We use density functional methods to identify the atomic configurations of H and D atoms trapped by O impurities and embedded in bulk Nb. We calculate the double-well potential for O-H and O-D impurities, wave functions, and tunnel splittings for H and D atoms. Our results are in agreement with those obtained from analysis of heat capacity and neutron scattering measurements on Nb with low concentrations of O-H and O-D.

Importance of van der Waals interactions for ab initio studies of topological insulators

We investigate the lattice and electronic structures of the bulk and surface of the prototypical layered topological insulators Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ using ab initio density functional methods, and systematically compare the results of different methods of including van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We show that the methods utilizing semi-empirical energy corrections yield accurate descriptions of these materials, with the most precise results obtained by properly accounting for the long-range tail of the vdW interactions. The bulk lattice constants, distances between quintuple layers and the Dirac velocity of the topological surface states (TSS) are all in excellent agreement with experiment. In Bi$_2$Te$_3$, hexagonal warping of the energy dispersion leads to complex spin textures of the TSS at moderate energies, while in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ these states remain almost perfectly helical away from the Dirac point, showing appreciable signs of hexagonal warping at much higher energies, above the minimum of the bulk conduction band. Our results establish a framework for unified and systematic self-consistent first principles calculations of topological insulators in bulk, slab and interface geometries, and provides the necessary first step towards ab initio modeling of topological heterostructures.

Helical magnetic order and Fermi surface nesting in non-centrosymmetric ScFeGe

An investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of non-centrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below $T_N = 36$ K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wavevector \textbf{\textit{k}} = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 $μ_{B}$ per formula unit confined to the {\it ab}-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the {\it c}-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the $c$-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wavevector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the {\it c}-axis conductivity at $T_N$, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the {\it ab}-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of $\approx$ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent, discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on an easy-plane magnetic system, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure.

Quantum oscillations and a non-trivial Berry phase in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

We report the measurements of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd. Several pieces of a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface are identified, including a small pocket (frequency 40 T) which is three dimensional and anisotropic. From the temperature dependence of the amplitude of the oscillations, the cyclotron effective mass is ($0.18$ $\pm$ 0.1) $m_e$. Further analysis showed a non-trivial $π$-Berry phase is associated with the 40 T pocket, which strongly supports the presence of topological states in bulk BiPd and may result in topological superconductivity due to the proximity coupling to other bands.

Interface currents and magnetization in singlet-triplet superconducting heterostructures: Role of chiral and helical domains

Chiral and helical domain walls are generic defects of topological spin-triplet superconductors. We study theoretically the magnetic and transport properties of superconducting singlet-triplet-singlet heterostructure as a function of the phase difference between the singlet leads in the presence of chiral and helical domains inside the spin-triplet region. The local inversion symmetry breaking at the singlet-triplet interface allows the emergence of a static phase-controlled magnetization, and generally yields both spin and charge currents flowing along the edges. The parity of the domain wall number affects the relative orientation of the interface moments and currents, while in some cases the domain walls themselves contribute to spin and charge transport. We demonstrate that singlet-triplet heterostructures are a generic prototype to generate and control non-dissipative spin and charge effects, putting them in a broader class of systems exhibiting spin-Hall, anomalous Hall effects and similar phenomena. Features of the electron transport and magnetic effects at the interfaces can be employed to assess the presence of domains in chiral/helical superconductors.

Complex superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr

We report the electronic structure, synthesis, and measurements of the magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of the polycrystalline noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr. We observed a bulk superconducting transition at temperature $T_{c}$ $\sim$ 6.7 K, and measured the resistivity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and the London penetration depth below the transition, as well as performed doping and pressure studies. From these measurements we extracted the critical field, and the superconducting parameters of Re$_{6}$Zr. Our measurements indicate a relatively weak to moderate contribution from a triplet component to the order parameter, and favor a full superconducting gap, although we cannot exclude the existence of point nodes based on our data.

Tunable unconventional Kondo effect on topological insulator surfaces

We study Kondo physics of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity in electronic matter with strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be realized by depositing magnetic adatoms on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that magnetic properties of topological surface states and the very existence of Kondo screening strongly depend on details of the bulk material, and specifics of surface preparation encoded in time-reversal preserving boundary conditions for electronic wavefunctions. When this tunable Kondo effect occurs, the impurity spin is screened by purely orbital motion of surface electrons. This mechanism gives rise to a transverse magnetic response of the surface metal, and spin textures that can be used to experimentally probe signatures of a Kondo resonance. Our predictions are particularly relevant for STM measurements in ${\rm Pb Te}$-class crystalline topological insulators, but we also discuss implications for other classes of topological materials.

Impurity-induced antiferromagnetic order in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors: application to heavy fermion CeCoIn5

We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field, dilute magnetic impurities cooperate via RKKY-like exchange interactions to generate a long-range ordered coexistence state identical to the Q-phase. This result is in agreement with recent neutron scattering measurements [S. Raymond et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 83}, 013707 (2014)].

Control of magnetism in singlet-triplet superconducting heterostructures

We analyze the magnetization at the interface between singlet and triplet superconductors and show that its direction and dependence on the phase difference across the junction are strongly tied to the structure of the triplet order parameter as well as to the pairing interactions. We consider equal spin helical, opposite spin chiral, and mixed symmetry pairing on the triplet side and show that the magnetization vanishes at $ϕ=0$ only in the first case, follows approximately a $\cosϕ$ behavior for the second, and shows higher harmonics for the last configuration. We trace the origin of the magnetization to the magnetic structure of the Andreev bound states near the interface, and provide a symmetry-based explanation of the results. Our findings can be used to control the magnetization in superconducting heterostructures and to test symmetries of spin-triplet superconductors.

Orbital order and Hund's rule frustration in Kondo lattices

We analyze a microscopic origin of the Kondo effect-assisted orbital order in heavy-fermion materials. By studying the periodic two-orbital Anderson model with two local electrons, we show that frustration of Hund's rule coupling due to the Kondo effect leads to an incommensurate spiral orbital and magnetic order, which exists only inside the Kondo screened (heavy-electron) phase. This spiral state can be observed in neutron and resonant X-ray scattering measurements in ${\rm U}$- and ${\rm Pr}$-based heavy-fermion compounds, and realized in cold atomic gases, e.g. fermionic ${}^{173}{\rm Yb}$.

Inhomogeneous Superconducting States of Mesoscopic Thin-Walled Cylinders in External Magnetic Fields

We theoretically investigate the appearance of spatially modulated superconducting states in mesoscopic superconducting thin-wall cylinders in a magnetic field at low temperatures. Quantization of the electron motion around the circumference of the cylinder leads to a discontinuous evolution of the spatial modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the transition line T_c(H). We show that this discontinuity leads to the non-monotonic behavior of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconductivity as a function of temperature and field. We argue that this geometry provides an excellent opportunity to directly and unambiguously detect distinctive signatures of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov modulation of the superconducting order.

Heavy antiferromagnetic phases in Kondo lattices

We propose a microscopic physical mechanism that stabilizes coexistence of the Kondo effect and antiferromagnetism in heavy-fermion systems. We consider a two-dimensional quantum Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model and show that long-range electron hopping leads to a robust antiferromagnetic Kondo state. By using a modified slave-boson mean-field approach we analyze the stability of the heavy antiferromagnetic phase across a range or parameters, and discuss transitions between different phases. We also address connection to experiments on heavy fermion compounds.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point in FeGa3 Tuned by Mixed-Valence Fe Dimers

The magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of single crystals of the series Fe(Ga1-xGex)3 are reported. Pure FeGa3 is a nonmagnetic semiconductor, that when doped with small concentrations of Ge (extrinsic electrons), passes through an insulator-to-metal transition and displays non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior. Moreover, we observer clear signatures of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (FM-QCP) in this system at x = 0.052. The mechanism of the local moment formation is consistent with a one-electron reduction of Fe dimer singlets, a unique structural feature in FeGa3, where the density of these mixed valence (Fe(III)-Fe(II)) dimers provides a unique tuning parameter of quantum criticality.

Field-angle-resolved anisotropy in superconducting CeCoIn5 using realistic Fermi surfaces

We compute the field-angle-resolved specific heat and thermal conductivity using realistic model band structure for the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 to identify the gap structure and location of nodes. We use a two-band tight-binding parametrization of the band dispersion as input for the self-consistent calculations in the quasiclassical formulation of the superconductivity. Systematic analysis shows that modest in-plane anisotropy in the density of states and Fermi velocity in tetragonal crystals significantly affects the fourfold oscillations in thermal quantities, when the magnetic field is rotated in the basal plane. The Fermi surface anisotropy substantially shifts the location of the lines in the H-T plane, where the oscillations change sign compared to quasicylindrical model calculations. In particular, at high fields, the anisotropy and sign reversal are found even for isotropic gaps. Our findings imply that a simultaneous analysis of the specific heat and thermal conductivity, with an emphasis on the low energy sector, is needed to restrict potential pairing scenarios in multiband superconductors. We discuss the impact of our results on recent measurements of the Ce-115 family, namely CeTIn5 with T=Co,Rh,Ir.

Physical Properties of $Ba_2 Mn_2 Sb_2 O$ Single Crystals

We report both experimental and theoretical investigations of the physical properties of Ba$_\mathrm{2}$Mn$_\mathrm{2}$Sb$_\mathrm{2}$O single crystals. This material exhibits a hexagonal structure with lattice constants: a = 4.7029(15) Å and c = 19.9401(27) Å, as obtained from powder X-ray diffraction measurements, and in agreement with structural optimization through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat show anomalies at T$_\mathrm{N}$ = 60 K, consistent with antiferromagnetic ordering. However, the magnitude of T$_\mathrm{N}$ is significantly smaller than the Curie-Weiss temperature ($\mid$$\mathrm{Θ_{CW}}$$\mid$ $\approx$ 560 K), suggesting a magnetic system of reduced dimensionality. The temperature dependence of both the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity changes from an activated at $T$ $>$ T$_\mathrm{x}$ $\sim$ 200 K to a logarithmic at $T$ $<$ T$_\mathrm{x}$. Correspondingly, the magnetic susceptibility displays a bump at T$_\mathrm{x}$. DFT calculations at the DFT + U level support the experimental observation of an antiferromagnetic ground state.

Impurity states in multiband s-wave superconductors: analysis of iron pnictides

We examine the effect of a single, non-magnetic impurity in a multiband, extended s-wave superconductor allowing for anisotropy of the gaps on the Fermi surfaces. We derive analytic expressions for the Green's functions in the continuum and analyse the conditions for the existence of sharp impurity-induced resonant states. Underlying band structure is more relevant for the multiband than for single band case, and mismatch between the bands generically makes the formation of the impurity states less likely in the physical regime of parameters. We confirm these conclusions by numerically solving the impurity problem in a tight-binding parameterization of the bands relevant to pnictide superconductors.
