Transfer of spectral weight across the gap of Sr2IrO4 induced by La doping

We study with Angle Resolved PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (ARPES) the evolution of the electronic structure of Sr2IrO4, when holes or electrons are introduced, through Rh or La substitutions. At low dopings, the added carriers occupy the first available states, at bottom or top of the gap, revealing an anisotropic gap of 0.7eV in good agreement with STM measurements. At further doping, we observe a reduction of the gap and a transfer of spectral weight across the gap, although the quasiparticle weight remains very small. We discuss the origin of the in-gap spectral weight as a local distribution of gap values.

Ferroelectricity and Rashba effect in GeTe

GeTe has been proposed as the father compound of a new class of functional materials displaying bulk Rashba effects coupled to ferroelectricity: ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors. In nice agreement with first principle calculations, we show by angular resolved photoemission and piezo-force microscopy that GeTe displays surface and bulk Rashba bands arising from the intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking provided by the remanent ferroelectric polarization. This work points to the possibility to control the spin chirality of bands in GeTe by acting on its ferroelectric polarization.

The momentum and photon energy dependence of the circular dichroic photoemission in the bulk Rashba semiconductors BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl)

Bulk Rashba systems BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl) are emerging as important candidates for developing spintronics devices, because of the coexistence of spin-split bulk and surface states, along with the ambipolar character of the surface charge carriers. The need of studying the spin texture of strongly spin-orbit coupled materials has recently promoted circular dichroic Angular Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (cd-ARPES) as an indirect tool to measure the spin and the angular degrees of freedom. Here we report a detailed photon energy dependent study of the cd-ARPES spectra in BiTeX (X = I, Br and Cl). Our work reveals a large variation of the magnitude and sign of the dichroism. Interestingly, we find that the dichroic signal modulates differently for the three compounds and for the different spin-split states. These findings show a momentum and photon energy dependence for the cd-ARPES signals in the bulk Rashba semiconductor BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl). Finally, the outcome of our experiment indicates the important relation between the modulation of the dichroism and the phase differences between the wave-functions involved in the photoemission process. This phase difference can be due to initial or final state effects. In the former case the phase difference results in possible interference effects among the photo-electrons emitted from different atomic layers and characterized by entangled spin-orbital polarized bands. In the latter case the phase difference results from the relative phases of the expansion of the final state in different outgoing partial waves.

Evidence of momentum dependent hybridization in Ce2Co0.8Si3.2

We studied the electronic structure of the Kondo lattice system Ce2Co0.8Si3.2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The spectra obtained below the coherence temperature consist of a Kondo resonance, its spin-orbit partner and a number of dispersing bands. The quasiparticle weight related to the Kondo peak depends strongly on Fermi vectors associated with bulk bands. This indicates a highly anisotropic hybridization between conduction band and 4f electrons - V_{cf} in Ce2Co0.8Si3.2.

Estimate of the Coulomb Correlation Energy in CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ from Inverse Photoemission and High Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopy

The occupied and the unoccupied electronic structure of CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been studied using high resolution photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy respectively. High resolution photoemission reveals the clear signature of Ce $4f$ states in the occupied electronic structure which was not observed earlier due to the poor resolution. The coulomb correlation energy in this system has been determined experimentally from the position of the $4f$ states above and below the Fermi level. Theoretically the correlation energy has been determined by using the first principles density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximations taking into account the strong intra-atomic (on-site) interaction Hubbard $U_{eff}$ term. Although the valence band calculated with different $U_{eff}$ does not show significant difference, but the substantial changes are observed in the conduction band. The estimated value of correlation energy from both the theory and the experiment is $\approx$4.2~eV for CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$.

A flat band at the chemical potential of a Fe1.03Te0.94S0.06 superconductor observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of superconducting Fe1.03Te0.94S0.06 has been studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Experimental band topography is compared to the calculations using the methods of Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) with coherent potential approximation (CPA) and linearized augmented plane wave with local orbitals (LAPW+LO). The region of the Gamma point exhibits two hole pockets and a quasiparticle peak close to the chemical potential with undetectable dispersion. This flat band with mainly dz2 orbital character is formed most likely by the top of the outer hole pocket or is an evidence of the third hole band. It may cover up to 3 % of the Brillouin zone volume and should give rise to a Van Hove singularity. Studies performed for various photon energies indicate that at least one of the hole pockets has a two-dimensional character. The apparently nondispersing peak at the chemical potential is clearly visible for 40 eV and higher photon energies, due to an effect of photoionisation cross section rather than band dimensionality. Orbital characters calculated by LAPW+LO for stoichiometric FeTe do not reveal the flat dz2 band but are in agreement with the experiment for the other dispersions around Gamma in Fe1.03Te0.94S0.06.

Graphene on Ir(111) characterized by angle-resolved photoemission

Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is extensively used to characterize the dependence of the electronic structure of graphene on Ir(111) on the preparation process. ARPES findings reveal that temperature programmed growth alone or in combination with chemical vapor deposition leads to graphene displaying sharp electronic bands. The photoemission intensity of the Dirac cone is monitored as a function of the increasing graphene area. Electronic features of the moiré superstructure present in the system, namely minigaps and replica bands are examined and used as robust features to evaluate graphene uniformity. The overall dispersion of the pi-band is analyzed. Finally, by the variation of photon energy, relative changes of the pi- and sigma-band intensities are demonstrated.

Surface and bulk electronic structures of LaOFeAs studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of LaOFeAs, a parent compound of iron-arsenic superconductors, is studied by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. By examining its dependence on photon energy, polarization, sodium dosing and the counting of Fermi surface volume, both the bulk and the surface contributions are identified. We find that a bulk band moves toward high binding energies below structural transition, and shifts smoothly across the spin density wave transition by about 25 meV. Our data suggest the band reconstruction may play a crucial role in the spin density wave transition, and the structural transition is driven by the short range magnetic order. For the surface states, both the LaO-terminated and FeAs-terminated components are revealed. Certain small band shifts are verified for the FeAs-terminated surface states in the spin density wave state, which is a reflection of the bulk electronic structure reconstruction. Moreover, sharp quasiparticle peaks quickly rise at low temperatures, indicating of drastic reduction of the scattering rate. A kink structure in one of the surface band is shown to be possibly related to the electron-phonon interactions.

Experimental study of the incoherent spectral weight in the photoemission spectra of the misfit cobaltate [Bi2Ba2O4][CoO2]2

Previous ARPES experiments in NaxCoO2 reported both a strongly renormalized bandwidth near the Fermi level and moderately renormalized Fermi velocities, leaving it unclear whether the correlations are weak or strong and how they could be quantified. We explain why this situation occurs and solve the problem by extracting clearly the coherent and incoherent parts of the band crossing the Fermi level. We show that one can use their relative weight to estimate self-consistently the quasiparticle weight Z, which turns out to be very small Z=0.15 +/- 0.05. We suggest this method could be a reliable way to study the evolution of correlations in cobaltates and for comparison with other strongly correlated systems.

New electronic orderings observed in cobaltates under the influence of misfit periodicities

We study with ARPES the electronic structure of CoO2 slabs, stacked with rock-salt (RS) layers exhibiting a different (misfit) periodicity. Fermi Surfaces (FS) in phases with different doping and/or periodicities reveal the influence of the RS potential on the electronic structure. We show that these RS potentials are well ordered, even in incommensurate phases, where STM images reveal broad stripes with width as large as 80Å. The anomalous evolution of the FS area at low dopings is consistent with the localization of a fraction of the electrons. We propose that this is a new form of electronic ordering, induced by the potential of the stacked layers (RS or Na in NaxCoO2) when the FS becomes smaller than the Brillouin Zone of the stacked structure.

Evidence for Three-Dimensionality in the Fermi Surface Topology of Layered Electron Doped Ba(Fe1-XCox)2As2 Iron Superconductors

The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the cuprates high temperature superconductors.

Valence band electronic structure of V2O3: identification of V and O bands

We present a comprehensive study of the photon energy dependence of the valence band photoemission yield in the prototype Mott-Hubbard oxide V2O3. The analysis of our experimental results, covering an extended photon energy range (20-6000 eV) and combined with GW calculations, allow us to identify the nature of the orbitals contributing to the total spectral weight at different binding energies, and in particular to locate the V 4s at about 8 eV binding energy. From this comparative analysis we can conclude that the intensity of the quasiparticle photoemission peak, observed close to the Fermi level in the paramagnetic metallic phase upon increasing photon energy, does not have a significant correlation with the intensity variation of the O 2p and V 3d yield, thus confirming that bulk sensitivity is an essential requirement for the detection of this coherent low energy excitation.

Two-dimensional electron gas formation in undoped In[0.75]Ga[0.25]As/In[0.75]Al[0.25]As quantum wells

We report on the achievement of a two-dimensional electron gas in completely undoped In[0.75]Al[0.25]As/In[0.75]Ga[0.25]As metamorphic quantum wells. Using these structures we were able to reduce the carrier density, with respect to reported values in similar modulation-doped structures. We found experimentally that the electronic charge in the quantum well is likely due to a deep-level donor state in the In[0.75]Al[0.25]As barrier band gap, whose energy lies within the In[0.75]Ga[0.25]As/In[0.75]Al[0.25]As conduction band discontinuity. This result is further confirmed through a Poisson-Schroedinger simulation of the two-dimensional electron gas structure.

Superconducting Gap vs. Wave Vector: Evidence for Hot Regions on the Fermi Surface

We have used angular resolved photoemission to measure the angular dependence of the superconducting gap in highly overdoped Bi2212 (Tc=65K). While the node at 45 degrees is conserved, we find substantial deviation from a first order d-wave dependence away from the node. The pairing susceptibility is peaked at special regions on the Fermi surface. Comparing these results with a detailed mapping of the Fermi surface we performed, we could measure the extension and location of these hot regions. We find the hot regions to be evenly spread about the nominal locations of hot spots. The decrease of the gap amplitude away from these hot regions follows very closely theoretical calculations within the spin fluctuation approach. These results strongly suggest that the pairing susceptibility is peaked at Q=(Pi,Pi).

Evolution of the quasiparticle spectral function in cuprates

We analyzed photoemssion data for several doping levels of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} compounds, ranging from overdoped to underdoped. We show that the high frequency part of the spectra near (0,π) can be described by Fermi liquid theory in the overdoped regime, but exhibits a non-Fermi liquid behavior in the underdoped regime. We further demonstrate that this novel behavior fits reasonably well to a 1/\sqrtω behavior suggested for systems with strong spin fluctuations.
