Domain engineering of the metastable domains in the 4f-uniaxial-ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B

In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.

Zero-Bias Anomalies in Narrow Tunnel Junctions in the Quantum Hall Regime

We report on the study of cleaved-edge-overgrown line junctions with a serendipitously created narrow opening in an otherwise thin, precise line barrier. Two sets of zero-bias anomalies are observed with an enhanced conductance for filling factors $ν> 1$ and a strongly suppressed conductance for $ν< 1$. A transition between the two behaviors is found near $ν\approx 1$. The zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) line shapes find explanation in Luttinger liquid models of tunneling between quantum Hall edge states. The ZBA for $ν< 1$ occurs from strong backscattering induced by suppression of quasiparticle tunneling between the edge channels for the $n = 0$ Landau levels. The ZBA for $ν> 1$ arises from weak tunneling of quasiparticles between the $n = 1$ edge channels.

Network analysis of online bidding activity

With the advent of digital media, people are increasingly resorting to online channels for commercial transactions. Online auction is a prototypical example. In such online transactions, the pattern of bidding activity is more complex than traditional online transactions; this is because the number of bidders participating in a given transaction is not bounded and the bidders can also easily respond to the bidding instantaneously. By using the recently developed network theory, we study the interaction patterns between bidders (items) who (that) are connected when they bid for the same item (if the item is bid by the same bidder). The resulting network is analyzed by using the hierarchical clustering algorithm, which is used for clustering analysis for expression data from DNA microarrays. A dendrogram is constructed for the item subcategories; this dendrogram is compared with a traditional classification scheme. The implication of the difference between the two is discussed.

Interaction Effects and Pseudogap in Two-Dimensional Lateral Tunnel Junctions

Tunneling characteristics of a two-dimensional lateral tunnel junction (2DLTJ) are reported. A pseudogap on the order of Coulomb energy is detected in the tunneling density of states (TDOS) when two identical two-dimensional electron systems are laterally separated by a thin energy barrier. The Coulombic pseudogap remains robust well into the quantum Hall regime until it is overshadowed by the cyclotron gap in the TDOS. The pseudogap is modified by in-plane magnetic field, demonstrating a non-trivial effect of in-plane magnetic field on the electron-electron interaction.

Bidding process in online auctions and winning strategy:rate equation approach

Online auctions have expanded rapidly over the last decade and have become a fascinating new type of business or commercial transaction in this digital era. Here we introduce a master equation for the bidding process that takes place in online auctions. We find that the number of distinct bidders who bid $k$ times, called the $k$-frequent bidder, up to the $t$-th bidding progresses as $n_k(t)\sim tk^{-2.4}$. The successfully transmitted bidding rate by the $k$-frequent bidder is obtained as $q_k(t) \sim k^{-1.4}$, independent of $t$ for large $t$. This theoretical prediction is in agreement with empirical data. These results imply that bidding at the last moment is a rational and effective strategy to win in an eBay auction.

Quantum Hall line junction with impurities as a multi-slit Luttinger liquid interferometer

We report on quantum interference between a pair of counterpropagating quantum Hall edge states that are separated by a high quality tunnel barrier. Observed Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are analyzed in terms of resonant tunneling between coupled Luttinger liquids that creates bound electronic states between pairs of tunnel centers that act like interference slits. We place a lower bound in the range of 20-40 $μ$m for the phase coherence length and directly confirm the extended phase coherence of quantum Hall edge states.

Cascade of Quantum Phase Transitions in Tunnel-Coupled Edge States

We report on the cascade of quantum phase transitions exhibited by tunnel-coupled edge states across a quantum Hall line junction. We identify a series of quantum critical points between successive strong and weak tunneling regimes in the zero-bias conductance. Scaling analysis shows that the conductance near the critical magnetic fields $B_{c}$ is a function of a single scaling argument $|B-B_{c}|T^{-κ}$, where the exponent $κ= 0.42$. This puzzling resemblance to a quantum Hall-insulator transition points to importance of interedge correlation between the coupled edge states.

Vertical Confinement and Evolution of Reentrant Insulating Transition in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

We have observed an anomalous shift of the high field reentrant insulating phases in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) tightly confined within a narrow GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. Instead of the well-known transitions into the high field insulating states centered around $ν= 1/5$, the 2DES confined within an 80Å-wide quantum well exhibits the transition at $ν= 1/3$. Comparably large quantum lifetime of the 2DES in narrow well discounts the effect of disorder and points to confinement as the primary driving force behind the evolution of the reentrant transition.

Emerging behavior in electronic bidding

We characterize the statistical properties of a large number of agents on two major online auction sites. The measurements indicate that the total number of bids placed in a single category and the number of distinct auctions frequented by a given agent follow power-law distributions, implying that a few agents are responsible for a significant fraction of the total bidding activity on the online market. We find that these agents exert an un-proportional influence on the final price of the auctioned items. This domination of online auctions by an unusually active minority may be a generic feature of all online mercantile processes.

Correlation Effects on Magnetic Anisotropy in Fe and Ni

We calculate magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe and Ni by taking into account the effects of strong electronic correlations, spin-orbit coupling, and non-collinearity of intra-atomic magnetization. The LDA+U method is used and its equivalence to dynamical mean-field theory in the static limit is derived. The effects of strong correlations are studied along several paths in $(U,J)$ parameter space. Both experimental magnitude of MAE and direction of magnetization are predicted correctly near $U=1.9 eV$, $J=1.2 eV$ for Ni and $U=1.2 eV$, $J=0.8 eV$ for Fe. The modified one-electron spectra by strong correlations are emphasized in conjunction with magnetic anisotropy.
