Weibel instability in hot plasma flows with production of gamma-rays and electron-positron pairs

We present the results of theoretical analysis and numerical simulations of the Weibel instability in two counter-streaming hot relativistic plasma flows, e.g. flows of electron-proton plasma having rest-mass density $ρ\sim 10^{-4}\; \text{g}\, \text{cm}^{-3}$, Lorentz factors $Γ\sim 10$ and proper temperature $T \sim 10^{13}\; \text{K}$. The instability growth rate and the filament size at the linear stage are found analytically, and are in qualitative agreement with results of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. In the simulations, incoherent synchrotron emission and pair photoproduction in electromagnetic fields are taken into account. If the plasma flows are dense, fast and/or hot enough, the overall energy of synchrotron photons can be much larger than the energy of generated electromagnetic fields. Furthermore, a sizable number of positrons can be produced due to the pair photoproduction in the generated magnetic field. We propose a rough criterion for judging copious pair production and synchrotron losses. By means of this criterion we conclude that incoherent synchrotron emission and pair production during the Weibel instability can have implications for the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts.

Near-surface electron acceleration during intense laser-solid interaction in the grazing incidence regime

When a relativistically intense p-polarized laser pulse is grazingly incident onto a planar solid-state target, a slightly superluminal field structure is formed near the target surface due to the incident and reflected waves superposition. This field structure can both extract the electrons from the target and accelerate them. It is theoretically shown that the acceleration is possible and stable for a wide range of electron initial conditions. PIC simulations confirm that this mechanism can actually take place for realistic parameters. As a result, the electron bunches with charge of tens of nC and GeV-level energy can be produced using a laser intensity $10^{21}-10^{22}$ W/cm${}^2$. It is also shown that the presence of a preplasma can increase the acceleration rate, which becomes possible because of more efficient electron injection into the accelerating field structure.

Ionization-induced laser-driven QED cascade in noble gases

A formula for the ionization rate in extremely intense electromagnetic field is proposed and used for numerical study of QED (quantum-electrodynamical) cascades in noble gases in the field of two counter-propagating laser pulses. It is shown that the number of the electron-positron pairs produced in the cascade increases with the atomic number of the gas where the gas density is taken to be reversely proportional to the atomic number. While the most electrons produced in the laser pulse front are expelled by the ponderomotive force from region occupied by the strong laser field there is a small portion of the electrons staying in the laser field for a long time until the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. This mechanism is relevant for all gases. For high-$Z$ gases there is an additional mechanism associated with the ionization of inner shells at the the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. The role of both mechanisms for cascade initiation is revealed.

Analytic model for electromagnetic fields in the bubble regime of plasma wakefield in non-uniform plasmas

Based on a model of plasma wakefield in the strongly nonlinear (bubble) regime, we develop a lowest-order perturbation theory for the components of electromagnetic fields inside and outside the bubble using the assumption of small thickness of the electron sheath on the boundary of the bubble. Unlike previous models, we derive simple explicit expressions for the components of electromagnetic fields not only in the vicinity of the center of the bubble, but in the whole volume of the bubble (including areas of driving or accelerated bunches) as well as outside it. Moreover, we apply the results to the case of radially non-uniform plasma and, in particular, to plasma with a hollow channel. The obtained results are verified with 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations which show good correspondence to our model.

Production and dynamics of positrons in ultrahigh intensity laser-foil interactions

The electron-positron pair production accompanying interaction of a circularly polarized laser pulse with a foil is studied for laser intensities higher than $10^{24}$W cm$^{-2}$. The laser energy penetrates into the foil due to the effect of the relativistic hole-boring. It is demonstrated that the electron-positron plasma is produced as a result of quantum-electrodynamical cascading in the field of the incident and reflected laser light in front of the foil. The incident and reflected laser light makes up the circularly polarized standing wave in the reference frame of the hole-boring front and the pair density peaks near the nodes and antinodes of the wave. A model based on the particle dynamics with radiation reaction effect near the magnetic nodes is developed. The model predictions are verified by 3D PIC-MC simulations.

Beam loading in the bubble regime in plasmas with hollow channels

Based on the already existing analytical theory of the strongly-nonlinear wakefield (which is called "bubble") in transversely inhomogeneous plasmas, we study particular behavior of non-loaded (empty) bubbles and bubbles with accelerated bunches. We obtain an analytical expression for the shape of a non-loaded bubble in a general case and verify it with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. We derive a method of calculation of the acceleration efficiency for arbitrary accelerated bunches. The influence of flat-top electron bunches on the shape of a bubble is studied. It is also shown that it is possible to achieve acceleration in a homogeneous longitudinal electric field by the adjustment of the longitudinal density profile of the accelerated electron bunch. The predictions of the model are verified by 3D PIC simulations and are in a good agreement with them.

Incoherent synchrotron emission of laser-driven plasma edge

When a relativistically intense linearly polarized laser pulse is incident on an overdense plasma, a dense electron layer is formed on the plasma edge which relativistic motion results in high harmonic generation, ion acceleration and incoherent synchrotron emission of gamma-photons. Here we present a self-consistent analytical model that describes the edge motion and apply it to the problem of incoherent synchrotron emission by ultrarelativistic plasma electrons. The model takes into account both coherent radiation reaction from high harmonics and incoherent radiation reaction in the Landau-Lifshitz form. The analytical results are in agreement with 3D particle-in-cell simulations in a certain parameter region that corresponds to the relativistic electronic spring interaction regime.

Field-reversed bubble in deep plasma channels for high quality electron acceleration

We study hollow plasma channels with smooth boundaries for laser-driven electron acceleration in the bubble regime. Contrary to the uniform plasma case, the laser forms no optical shock and no etching at the front. This increases the effective bubble phase velocity and energy gain. The longitudinal field has a plateau that allows for mono-energetic acceleration. We observe as low as 10^{-3} r.m.s. relative witness beam energy uncertainty in each cross-section and 0.3% total energy spread. By varying plasma density profile inside a deep channel, the bubble fields can be adjusted to balance the laser depletion and dephasing lengths. Bubble scaling laws for the deep channel are derived. Ultra-short pancake-like laser pulses lead to the highest energies of accelerated electrons per Joule of laser pulse energy.

Gamma-ray generation in ultrahigh-intensity laser-foil interactions

Incoherent photon emission by ultrarelativistic electrons in the normal incidence of a laser pulse on a foil is investigated by means of three-dimensional numerical simulations in the range of intensities $2 \times 10^{21} \text{--} 2 \times 10^{25} \text{W} \, \text{cm}^{-2}$ and electron densities $2 \times 10^{22} \text{--} 1 \times 10^{24} \text{cm}^{-3}$. We focus on properties of the resulting synchrotron radiation, such as its overall energy, directivity of the radiation pattern and slope of the energy spectrum. Regimes of laser-foil interactions are studied in the framework of a simple analytical model. The laser-plasma parameters for efficient gamma-ray generation are found and revealed to be close to the parameters for relativistic foil motion. It is shown that in the case of oblique incidence of a $3 \text{PW}$, $10 \text{fs}$ laser pulse on a thin foil about $10^{8} \text{photons}/0.1\% \text{bandwidth}$ are produced at the energy level of $1 \text{MeV}$ that significantly exceeds performance of the modern Compton gamma-ray sources. Various applications of the gamma-ray bunches are discussed.

Effect of laser polarization on QED cascading

Development of QED cascades in a standing electromagnetic wave for circular and linear polarizations is simulated numerically with a 3D PIC-MC code. It is demonstrated that for the same laser energy the number of particles produced in a circularly polarized field is greater than in a linearly polarized field, though the acquiring mean energy per particle is larger in the latter case. The qualitative model of laser-assisted QED cascades is extended by including the effect of polarization of the field. It turns out that cascade dynamics is notably more complicated in the case of linearly polarized field, where separation into the qualitatively different "electric" and "magnetic" regions (where the electric field is stronger than the magnetic field and vice versa) becomes essential. In the "electric" regions acceleration is suppressed and moreover the high-energy electrons are even getting cooled by photon emission. The volumes of the "electric" and "magnetic" regions evolve periodically in time, and so does the cascade growth rate. In contrast to the linear polarization the charged particles can be accelerated by circularly polarized wave even in "magnetic" region. The "electric" and "magnetic" regions do not evolve in time and cascade growth rate almost does not depend on time for circular polarization.

On radiative damping in plasma-based accelerators

Radiative damping in plasma-based electron accelerators is analyzed. The electron dynamics under combined influence of the constant accelerating force and the classical radiation reaction force is studied. It is shown that electron acceleration cannot be limited by radiation reaction. If initially the accelerating force was stronger than the radiation reaction force then the electron acceleration is unlimited. Otherwise the electron is decelerated by radiative damping up to a certain instant of time and then accelerated without limits. Regardless of the initial conditions the infinite-time asymptotic behavior of an electron is governed by self-similar solution providing unlimited acceleration. The relative energy spread induced by the radiative damping decreases with time in the infinite-time limit.

Analytical model for electromagnetic cascades in rotating electric field

Electromagnetic cascades attract a lot of attention as an important QED effect that will reveal itself in various electromagnetic field configurations at ultrahigh intensities. We study cascade dynamics in rotating electric field analytically and numerically. The kinetic equations for the electron-positron plasma and gamma-quanta are formulated. The scaling laws are derived and analyzed. For the cascades arising far above the threshold the dependence of the cascade parameters on the field frequency is derived. The spectra of high-energy cascade particles are calculated. The analytical results are verified by numerical simulations.

Laser field absorption in self-generated electron-positron pair plasma

Recently much attention has being attracted to the problem of limitations on the attainable intensity of high power lasers [A.M. Fedotov {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 080402 (2010)]. The laser energy can be absorbed by electron-positron pair plasma produced from a seed by strong laser field via development of the electromagnetic cascades. The numerical model for self-consistent study of electron-positron pair plasma dynamics is developed. Strong absorption of the laser energy in self-generated overdense electron-positron pair plasma is demonstrated. It is shown that the absorption becomes important for not extremely high laser intensity $I \sim 10^{24}$ W/cm$^2$ achievable in the nearest future.

QED cascades induced by circularly polarized laser fields

The results of Monte-Carlo simulations of electron-positron-photon cascades initiated by slow electrons in circularly polarized fields of ultra-high strength are presented and discussed. Our results confirm previous qualitative estimations [A.M. Fedotov, et al., PRL 105, 080402 (2010)] of the formation of cascades. This sort of cascades has revealed the new property of the restoration of energy and dynamical quantum parameter due to the acceleration of electrons and positrons by the field and may become a dominating feature of laser-matter interactions at ultra-high intensities. Our approach incorporates radiation friction acting on individual electrons and positrons.

Magneto Inertial Fusion Based on a Cusp Field Configuration

We study the cusp configuration of pre-seeded magnetic field for laser-driven flux-compression. The proposed configuration provides better particle confinement than that in Ref. [O.V. Gotchev et al., Journal of Fusion Energy 27 (2008) 25-31.] thereby leading to better magnetic insulation of hot fusion plasma. We develop the model that takes into account (i) magnetized target implosion, (ii) magnetic flux compression; (iii) particle losses from magnetic trap. The key parameter governing the process is the ratio of the implosion time to the particle loss time.
