Real Time Correlators in Hot (2+1)d QCD

We use dimensional reduction techniques to relate real time finite T correlation functions in (2+1) dimensional QCD to bound state parameters in a generalized 't Hooft model with an infinite number of heavy quark and adjoint scalar fields. While static susceptibilities and correlation functions of the DeTar type can be calculated using only the light (static) gluonic modes, the dynamical correlators require the inclusion of the heavy modes. In particular we demonstrate that the leading T perturbative result can be understood in terms of the bound states of the 2d model and that consistency requires bound state trajectories composed of both quarks and adjoint scalars. We also propose a non-perturbative expression for the dynamical DeTar correlators at small spatial momenta.

Nucleons at Finite Temperature

The nucleon mass shift is calculated using chiral counting arguments and a virial expansion, without and with the $Δ$. At all temperatures, the mass shift and damping rate are dominated by the $Δ$. Our results are compared with the empirical analysis of Leutwyler and Smilga, as well as results from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large $N_{c}$ (number of color) limit. We show that unitarity implies that the concepts of thermal shifts are process dependent.

Two-Dimensional Solitons at Finite Temperature

The partition function of two-dimensional solitons in a heat bath of mesons is worked out to one-loop. For temperatures large compared to the meson mass, the free energy is dominated by the meson-soliton bound states and the zero modes, a consequence of Levinson's theorem. Using the Bethe-Uhlenbeck formula we compare the soliton energy-shift to the shift expected in the pole mass using a virial expansion. We construct the partition function associated to a fast moving soliton at finite temperature, and found that the soliton thermal inertial mass is no longer constrained by Poincare's symmetry. At finite temperature, the concept of quasiparticles is process dependent.

Hadrons and QCD Instantons: a Bosonized View

In a dilute system of instantons and antiinstantons, the U$_{\rm A}$(1) and scale anomalies are shown to be directly related to the bulk susceptibility and compressibility of the system. Using $1/N_c$ (where $N_c$ is the number of colors) as a book-keeping argument, mesonic, baryonic and gluonic correlators are worked out in p-space and Fourier transformed to x-space for a comparison with recently simulated correlators. The results are in overall agreement with simulations and lattice calculations, for distances up to 1.5 fm, despite the fact that some channels lack the necessary physical singularities. We analyze various space-like form factors of the nucleon and show that they are amenable to constituent quark form factors to leading order in $1/N_c$. Issues related to the lack of confinement in the model and its consequence on the various correlation functions and form factors are also discussed.

Master Formula Approach to $γγ\to ππ$ processes

We analyze the $γγ\to π^0π^0$ and $γγ\to π^+π^-$ reactions using the master formula approach to chiral symmetry breaking. The pertinent vacuum correlators are estimated at tree level, and the results are compared with one- and two-loop chiral perturbation theory. The Compton scattering amplitude and the pion polarizabilities are also discussed.

Heavy Hadrons and QCD Instantons

Heavy hadrons are analyzed in a random and dilute gas of instantons. We derive the instanton-induced interactions between heavy and light quarks at next to leading order in the heavy quark mass and in the planar approximation, and discuss their effects on the hadronic spectrum. The role of these interactions in the formation of exotic hadrons is also discussed.

Heavy Mesons in a Random Instanton Gas

We analyze the correlation function of a meson with one heavy and one light quark in inverse powers of the heavy quark mass $m_Q$ using a succession of Foldy-Wouthuysen-type transformations prior to radiative corrections. We evaluate the correlator to order $m_Q^0$ in a random and dilute gas of instantons, using the planar approximation. We show, in leading order in the density, that the heavy quark mass is shifted to the order $m_Q^0$ and that the induced interaction between the heavy and light quarks is attractive. We also find it to be an order of magnitude smaller than the 't Hooft interaction between two light quarks. The shift in the heavy quark mass is related to the perimeter law of large Wilson loops. The relevance of these results for general hadronic correlators with heavy quarks is discussed.

QED With Unequal Charges: A study of spontaneous Zn symmetry breaking

We study two-dimensional QED with unequal charges at finite temperature, and show that there is a phase with a spontaneously broken $Z_n$ symmetry. In spite of this, we were not able to establish the presence of domain walls. The relevance for QCD in higher dimensions is discussed.

Random matrix theory and $QCD_3$

We suggest that the spectral properties near zero virtuality of three dimensional QCD, follow from a Hermitean random matrix model. The exact spectral density is derived for this family of random matrix models both for even and odd number of fermions. New sum rules for the inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator are obtained. The issue of anomalies in random matrix theories is discussed.

QCD Instantons in Vacuum and Matter

The singlet coupling to the topological charge density in the instanton vacuum, causes the instantons and antiinstantons to be screened over distances of the order of 1/2 fm. Dilute instanton systems behave as a free gas, while dense instanton systems behave as a plasma. The free gas behaviour is favored by a density of 1 fm$^{-4}$. Owing to the Higgs mechanism, the $η$' mass is heavy (1100 MeV). The vacuum topological susceptibility is small (0.07 fm$^{-4}$) and consistent with the QCD Ward identity. In the chiral limit, the singlet screening vanishes, leading to a four dimensional plasma state with a temperature given by the nonet decay constant $f$ (90 MeV). The phase is Debye screened. In the presence of matter, the screening is quenched, and a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition may occur signaling the restoration of the $U_A(1)$ symmetry. We suggest to use the spatial asymptotics of the static topological charge correlator together with the topological susceptibility to probe the interplay between the $U_A(1)$ restoration and the chiral restoration in finite temperature QCD. The relevance of these results to the bulk thermodynamics in the instanton vacuum is discussed.

Baryonic and Gluonic Correlators in Hot QCD

We extend our earlier work on static color singlet correlators in high T QCD (DeTar correlators) to baryonic and gluonic sources, and estimate the corresponding screening masses using the dimensionally reduced theory. We discuss spin and polarization dependence of meson and baryon masses in the $T \rightarrow \infty$ limit, and possible nonperturbative effects at non-asymptotic temperatures.

Finite Temperature Correlators in the Schwinger Model

We discuss the correlation function of hadronic currents in the Schwinger model at finite temperature $T$. We explicitly construct the retarded correlator in real time and obtain analytical results for the Euclidean correlator on a torus. Both constructions lead to the same finite temperature spectral function. The spatial screening lengths in the mesonic channels are related to the dynamical meson mass $m=e/\sqrtπ$ and not $2πT$ even in the infinite temperature limit. The relevance of our results for the finite temperature problem in four dimensions is discussed.

Hot QCD

I discuss a comprehensive approach to the spacelike physics in high temperature QCD in three dimensions. The approach makes use of dimensional reduction. I suggest that this approach is useful for high temperature QCD in four dimensions.

Spectral Density of the QCD Dirac Operator near Zero Virtuality

We investigate the spectral properties of a random matrix model, which in the large $N$ limit, embodies the essentials of the QCD partition function at low energy. The exact spectral density and its pair correlation function are derived for an arbitrary number of flavors and zero topological charge. Their microscopic limit provide the master formulae for sum rules for the inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator as recently discussed by Leutwyler and Smilga.

Nonabelian Berry Phases in Baryons

We show how generic nonabelian gauge fields can be induced in baryons when a hierarchy of fast degrees of freedom is integrated out. We identify them with nonabelian Berry potentials and discuss their role in transmuting quantum numbers in bag and soliton models of baryons. The resulting baryonic spectra for both light and heavy quark systems are generic and resemble closely the excitation spectrum of diatomic molecules. The symmetry restoration in the system, i.e., the electronic rotational invariance in diatomic molecules, the heavy-quark symmetry in heavy baryons etc. is interpreted in terms of the vanishing of nonabelian Berry potentials that otherwise govern the hyperfine splitting.

Chiral effective action with heavy quark symmetry

We derive an effective action combining chiral and heavy quark symmetry, using approximate bosonization techniques of QCD. We explicitly show that the heavy-quark limit is compatible with the large $N_c$ (number of color) limit in the meson sector, and derive specific couplings between the light and heavy mesons ($D$, $D^*$, ...) and their chiral partners. The relevance of this effective action to solitons with heavy quarks describing heavy baryons is discussed.
