Novel magnetic phase in a weakly ordered spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet Sr$_2$CuO$_3$

We present the magnetic phase diagram of a spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ studied by ultrasound phase-sensitive detection technique. We observe an enhanced effect of external magnetic field on the ordering temperature of the system, which is in the extreme proximity to the quantum critical point. Inside the Néel ordered phase, we detect an additional field-induced continuous phase transition, which is unexpected for a collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This transition is accompanied by softening of magnetic excitation mode observed by electron-spin resonance, which can be associated with a longitudinal (amplitude) mode of the order parameter in a weakly-coupled system of spin-1/2 chains. These results suggest transition from a transverse collinear antiferromagnet to an amplitude-modulated spin density wave phase induced by magnetic field.

Two-dimensional Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 antiferromagnet

We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in YbMnBi2 single crystals. YbMnBi2 is a layered material with anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase and small cyclotron mass indicate the presence of quasi two dimensional Dirac fermions. Quantum oscillations in Hall resistivity suggest the presence of both electron and hole parts of the Fermi surface whereas the Berry phase suggests spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetic structure of Yb2Pt2Pb: Ising moments on the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

Neutron diffraction measurements were carried out on single crystals and powders of Yb2Pt2Pb, where Yb moments form planes of orthogonal dimers in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Yb2Pt2Pb orders antiferromagnetically at TN=2.07 K, and the magnetic structure determined from these measurements features the interleaving of two orthogonal sublattices into a 5*5*1 magnetic supercell that is based on stripes with moments perpendicular to the dimer bonds, which are along (110) and (-110). Magnetic fields applied along (110) or (-110) suppress the antiferromagnetic peaks from an individual sublattice, but leave the orthogonal sublattice unaffected, evidence for the Ising character of the Yb moments in Yb2Pt2Pb. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements concur with neutron elastic scattering results that the longitudinal critical fluctuations are gapped with E about 0.07 meV.

Incoherent Soliton Excitations and Spin-Charge Separation in Blue Bronze

We present new high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data for K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$ (blue bronze) and propose a novel theoretical description of these results. The observed Fermi surface, with two quasi-one-dimensional sheets, is consistent with a ladder material with a weak inter-ladder coupling. Hence, we base our description on spectral properties of one-dimensional ladders. The marked broadening of the ARPES lineshape, a significant fraction of an eV, is interpreted in terms of spin-charge separation. A high energy feature, which is revealed for the first time in the spectra near the Fermi momentum thanks to improved energy resolution, is seen as a signature of a higher energy bound state of soliton excitations on a ladder.

Spin pseudogap in Ni-doped SrCuO2

The S=1/2 spin chain material SrCuO2 doped with 1% S=1 Ni-impurities is studied by inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, the spectrum shows a pseudogap Δ~ 8 meV, absent in the parent compound, and not related to any structural phase transition. The pseudogap is shown to be a generic feature of quantum spin chains with dilute defects. A simple model based on this idea quantitatively accounts for the exprimental data measured in the temperature range 2-300 K, and allows to represent the momentum-integrated dynamic structure factor in a universal scaling form.

Electronic thermoelectric power factor and metal-insulator transition in FeSb2

We show that synthesis-induced Metal -Insulator transition (MIT) for electronic transport along the orthorombic c axis of FeSb$_{2}$ single crystals has greatly enhanced electrical conductivity while keeping the thermopower at a relatively high level. By this means, the thermoelectric power factor is enhanced to a new record high S$^{2}$$σ$ $\sim$ 8000 $μ$WK$^{-2}$cm$^{-1}$ at 28 K. We find that the large thermopower in FeSb$_{2}$ can be rationalized within the correlated electron model with two bands having large quasiparaticle disparity, whereas MIT is induced by subtle structural differences. The results in this work testify that correlated electrons can produce extreme power factor values.

Polarized beam operation of the Hybrid Spectrometer at the pulsed Spallation Neutron Source

The concept of a neutron Hybrid Spectrometer (HYSPEC) combines the time-of-flight spectroscopy with the focusing Bragg optics and incorporates a polarized beam option. Here we describe the polarization analysis scheme proposed for HYSPEC and quantify its performance via the Monte-Carlo simulations. We find that the broadband supermirror-bender transmission polarizers provide reasonably good polarization analysis capability within about 8-10 meV energy window for scattered neutron energies in the thermal range up to about 25 meV.

Frustration-Induced Two Dimensional Quantum Disordered Phase in Piperazinium Hexachlorodicuprate

Piperazinium Hexachlorodicuprate (PHCC) is shown to be a frustrated quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a gapped spectrum. Zero-field inelastic neutron scattering and susceptibility and specific heat measurements as a function of applied magnetic field are presented. At T = 1.5 K, the magnetic excitation spectrum is dominated by a single propagating mode with a gap, Delta = 1 meV, and bandwidth of approximately 1.8 meV in the (h0l) plane. The mode has no dispersion along the b* direction indicating that neighboring a-c planes of the triclinic structure are magnetically decoupled. The heat capacity shows a reduction of the gap as a function of applied magnetic field in agreement with a singlet-triplet excitation spectrum. A field-induced ordered phase is observed in heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements for magnetic fields greater than H_c1 approximately equal to 7.5 Tesla. Analysis of the neutron scattering data reveals the important exchange interactions and indicates that some of these are highly frustrated.

Magnetic anisotropy and low-energy spin waves in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spiral magnet Ba_2 Cu Ge_2 O_7

New neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering experiments are used to investigate in detail the field dependence of the magnetic structure and low-energy spin wave spectrum of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnet Ba_2 Cu Ge_2 O_7. The results suggest that the previously proposed model for the magnetism of this compound (an ideal sinusoidal spin spiral, stabilized by isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) needs to be refined. Both new and previously published data can be quantitatively explained by taking into account the Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) term, a special magnetic anisotropy term that was predicted to always accompany Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in insulators.

Experimental evidence for Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (SEA) interactions in Ba2CuGe2O7

New neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Ba2CuGe2O7 suggest that the previously suggested model for the magnetism of this material (an ideal sinusoidal spin spiral, stabilized by isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) needs to be refined. Both new and previously published experimental results can be quantitatively explained by taking into account the Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (SEA) term, a special anisotropy term that was predicted to always accompany Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in insulators. Our experimental results present the first clear evidence to that SEA interactions can lead to substantial observable effects in a real magnetic system.

Magnetic ordering, spin waves, and Haldane gap excitations in (Nd_x Y_{1-x})_2 Ba Ni O_5 linear-chain mixed-spin antiferromagnets

Linear-chain nickelates with the composition (Nd_x Y_{1-x})_2 Ba Ni O_5 (x=1, x=0.75, x=0.5, and x=0.25) are studied in a series of neutron scattering experiments. Powder diffraction is used to determine the temperature dependence of the magnetic structure in all four systems. Single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering is employed to investigate the temperature dependence of the Haldane-gap excitations and low-energy spin waves in the x=1 compound Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5. The results of these experiments are discussed in the context of the ``Haldane chain in a staggered field'' model for R_2 Ba Ni O_5 systems, and quantitative agreement with theory is obtained.
