Autonomous stabilization of photonic Laughlin states through angular momentum potentials

We propose a method to stabilize Laughlin states of a large number of strongly interacting photons by combining a frequency-selective incoherent pump with a step-like potential in the angular momentum basis. Analytical expressions for the preparation efficiency and for the principal error sources are obtained. Direct extension of the preparation scheme to states containing single or multiple quasiholes is discussed.

Spontaneous quantum superradiant emission in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates subject to a synthetic vector potential

We theoretically investigate the spontaneous quantum emission of phonon pairs by superradiant processes in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a synthetic vector potential. Within the analog gravity perspective, this effect corresponds to the spontaneous emission of radiation from the ergosurface of rotating black holes. A general input-output formalism is built and used to characterize the spectral and correlation properties of the emission. Experimentally accessible signatures of the emission are pointed out in the correlation functions of the atomic gas.

Spatial and Spectral Mode-Selection Effects in Topological Lasers with Frequency-Dependent Gain

We develop a semiclassical theory of laser oscillation into a chiral edge state of a topological photonic system endowed with a frequency-dependent gain. As an archetypal model of this physics, we consider a Harper-Hofstadter lattice embedding population-inverted two-level atoms as gain material. We show that a suitable design of the spatial distribution of gain and of its spectral shape provides flexible mode selection mechanisms that can stabilize single-mode lasing into an edge state. Implications of our results for recent experiments are outlined.

On the role of interactions in trans-sonically flowing atomic condensates

We provide a joint numerical-analytical study of the physics of a flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the combined presence of an external trap and a step potential which accelerates the atoms out of the condensate creating a pair of neighbouring black- and white- hole horizons. In particular, we focus on the rapidly growing density modulation pattern that appears in the supersonic region, an experimentally observed feature that was related to black-hole lasing phenomena. A direct assessment of the role of interactions in this process suggests an interpretation of the experimental data in terms of linear interference of atomic waves rather than collective effects. Our conclusions are further supported by an analytical solution of the Schrodinger equation in terms of Airy wavefunctions.

Understanding superradiant phenomena with synthetic vector potentials in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically investigate superradiance effects in quantum field theories in curved space-times by proposing an analogue model based on Bose--Einstein condensates subject to a synthetic vector potential. The breaking of the irrotationality constraint of superfluids allows to study superradiance in simple planar geometries and obtain intuitive insight in the amplified scattering processes at ergosurfaces. When boundary conditions are modified allowing for reflections, dynamical instabilities are found, similar to the ones of ergoregions in rotating space-times. Their stabilization by horizons in black hole geometries is discussed. All these phenomena are reinterpreted through an exact mapping with the physics of one-dimensional relativistic charged scalar fields in electrostatic potentials. Our study provides a deeper understanding on the basic mechanisms of superradiance: by disentangling the different ingredients at play, it shines light on some misconceptions on the role of dissipation and horizons and on the competition between superradiant scattering and instabilities.

Light-matter interactions in synthetic magnetic fields: Landau-photon polaritons

We study light-matter interactions in two dimensional photonic systems in the presence of a spatially homogeneous synthetic magnetic field for light. Specifically, we consider one or more two-level emitters located in the bulk region of the lattice, where for increasing magnetic field the photonic modes change from extended plane waves to circulating Landau levels. This change has a drastic effect on the resulting emitter-field dynamics, which becomes intrinsically non-Markovian and chiral, leading to the formation of strongly coupled Landau-photon polaritons. The peculiar dynamical and spectral properties of these quasi-particles can be probed with state-of-the-art photonic lattices in the optical and the microwave domain and may find various applications for the quantum simulation of strongly interacting topological models.

Anyonic molecules in atomic fractional quantum Hall liquids: a quantitative probe of fractional charge and anyonic statistics

We study the quantum dynamics of massive impurities embedded in a strongly interacting two-dimensional atomic gas driven into the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime under the effect of a synthetic magnetic field. For suitable values of the atom-impurity interaction strength, each impurity can capture one or more quasi-hole excitations of the FQH liquid, forming a bound molecular state with novel physical properties. An effective Hamiltonian for such anyonic molecules is derived within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which provides renormalized values for their effective mass, charge and statistics by combining the finite mass of the impurity with the fractional charge and statistics of the quasi-holes. The renormalized mass and charge of a single molecule can be extracted from the cyclotron orbit that it describes as a free particle in a magnetic field. The anyonic statistics introduces a statistical phase between the direct and exchange scattering channels of a pair of indistinguishable colliding molecules, and can be measured from the angular position of the interference fringes in the differential scattering cross section. Implementations of such schemes beyond cold atomic gases are highlighted, in particular in photonic systems.

Zero-point excitation of a circularly moving detector in an atomic condensate and phonon laser dynamical instabilities

We study a circularly moving impurity in an atomic condensate for the realisation of superradiance phenomena in tabletop experiments. The impurity is coupled to the density fluctuations of the condensate and, in a quantum field theory language, it serves as an analog of a detector for the quantum phonon field. For sufficiently large rotation speeds, the zero-point fluctuations of the phonon field induce a sizeable excitation rate of the detector even when the condensate is initially at rest in its ground state. For spatially confined condensates and harmonic detectors, such a superradiant emission of sound waves provides a dynamical instability mechanism leading to a new concept of phonon lasing. Following an analogy with the theory of rotating black holes, our results suggest a promising avenue to quantum simulate basic interaction processes involving fast moving detectors in curved space-times.

Position- and momentum-space two-body correlations in a weakly interacting trapped condensate

We investigate the position- and momentum-space two--body correlations in a weakly interacting, harmonically trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensed gas at low temperatures. The two-body correlations are computed within the Bogoliubov approximation and the peculiarities of the trapped gas are highlighted in contrast to the spatially homogeneous case. In the position space, we recover the anti-bunching induced by the repulsive inter-atomic interaction in the condensed fraction localized around the trap center and the bunching in the outer thermal cloud. In the momentum space, bunching signatures appear for either equal or opposite values of the momentum and display peculiar features as a function of the momentum and the temperature. In analogy to the optical Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, the amplitude of the bunching signal at close-by momenta is fixed by the chaotic nature of the matter field state and its linewidth is shown to be set by the (inverse of the) finite spatial size of the associated in-trap momentum components. In contrast, the linewidth of the bunching signal at opposite-momenta is only determined by the condensate size.

Quantum fluctuations beyond the Gutzwiller approximation in the Bose-Hubbard model

We develop a quantum many-body theory of the Bose-Hubbard model based on the canonical quantization of the action derived from a Gutzwiller mean-field ansatz. Our theory is a systematic generalization of the Bogoliubov theory of weakly-interacting gases. The control parameter of the theory, defined as the zero point fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller mean-field state, remains small in all regimes. The approach provides accurate results throughout the whole phase diagram, from the weakly to the strongly interacting superfluid and into the Mott insulating phase. As specific examples of application, we study the two-point correlation functions, the superfluid stiffness, the density fluctuations, for which quantitative agreement with available quantum Monte Carlo data is found. In particular, the two different universality classes of the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition at integer and non-integer filling are recovered.

Non-linear edge dynamics of an Integer Quantum Hall fluid

We report a theoretical study of the linear and nonlinear dynamics of edge excitations of an integer quantum Hall state of non-interacting fermions. New features beyond the chiral Luttinger liquid picture are anticipated to arise from the interplay of the curvature of the Landau level dispersion and of the Pauli exclusion principle. For long-wavelength perturbations, the microscopic numerical results are captured by a chiral nonlinear hydrodynamic equation including a density-dependent velocity term. In the wave-breaking regime, shock waves are found to be regularized into a complex ripple pattern by dispersion effects. Our results are of specific relevance for experiments with synthetic quantum matter, in particular ultracold atomic gases.

Ergoregion instabilities in rotating two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates: new perspectives on the stability of quantized vortices

We investigate the stability of vortices in two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates. In analogy with rotating spacetimes and with a careful account of boundary conditions, we show that the dynamical instability of multiply quantized vortices in trapped condensates persists in untrapped, spatially homogeneous geometries and has an ergoregion nature with some modification due to the peculiar dispersion of Bogoliubov sound. Our results open new perspectives to the physics of vortices in trapped condensates, where multiply quantized vortices can be stabilized by interference effects and singly charged vortices can become unstable in suitably designed trap potentials. We show how superradiant scattering can be observed also in the short-time dynamics of dynamically unstable systems, providing an alternative point of view on dynamical (in)stability phenomena in spatially finite systems.

Hanbury-Brown and Twiss bunching of phonons and of the quantum depletion in a strongly-interacting Bose gas

We report the realisation of a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT)-like experiment with a gas of strongly interacting bosons at low temperatures. The regime of large interactions and low temperatures is reached in a three-dimensional optical lattice and atom-atom correlations are extracted from the detection of individual metastable Helium atoms after a long free-fall. We observe a HBT bunching in the non-condensed fraction of the gas whose properties strongly deviate from the HBT signals expected for non-interacting bosons. In addition, we show that the measured correlations reflect the peculiar quantum statistics of atoms belonging to the quantum depletion and of the Bogoliubov phonons, i.e., of collective excitations of the many-body quantum state. Our results demonstrate that atom-atom correlations provide information about the quantum state of strongly-interacting particles, extending the interest of HBT-like experiments beyond the case of non-interacting particles.

Interferences between Bogoliubov excitations and their impact on the evidence of superfluidity in a paraxial fluid of light

Paraxial fluids of light represent an alternative platform to atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and superfluid liquids for the study of the quantum behaviour of collective excitations. A key step in this direction is the precise characterization of the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, as recently shown in two experiments. However, the predicted interferences between the phonon excitations that would be a clear signature of the collective superfluid behaviour have not been observed to date. Here, by analytically, numerically, and experimentally exploring the phonon phase-velocity, we observe the presence of interferences between counter-propagating Bogoliubov excitations and demonstrate their critical impact on the measurement of the dispersion relation. These results are evidence of a key signature of light superfluidity and provide a novel characterization tool for quantum simulations with photons.

Theory of the coherence of topological lasers

We present a theoretical study of the temporal and spatial coherence properties of a topological laser device built by including saturable gain on the edge sites of a Harper--Hofstadter lattice for photons. For small enough lattices the Bogoliubov analysis applies, the emission is nearly a single-mode one and the coherence time is almost determined by the total number of photons in the device in agereement with the standard Schawlow-Townes phase diffusion. In larger lattices, looking at the lasing edge mode in the comoving frame of its chiral motion, the spatio-temporal correlations of long-wavelength fluctuations display a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling. Still, at very long times, when the finite size of the device starts to matter, the functional form of the temporal decay of coherence changes from the KPZ stretched exponential to a Schawlow-Townes-like exponential, while the nonlinear many-mode dynamics of KPZ fluctuations remains visible as an enhanced linewidth as compared to the single-mode Schawlow-Townes prediction. While we have established the above behaviors also for non-topological laser arrays, the crucial role of topology in protecting the coherence from static disorder is finally highlighted: our ground-breaking numerical calculations suggest the dramatically reinforced coherence properties of topological lasers compared to corresponding non-topological devices. These results open exciting possibilities for both fundamental studies of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and concrete applications to laser devices.

Galilean boosts and superfluidity of resonantly driven polariton fluids in the presence of an incoherent reservoir

We theoretically investigate how the presence of a reservoir of incoherent excitations affects the superfluidity properties of resonantly driven polariton fluids. While in the absence of reservoir the two cases of a defect moving in a fluid at rest and of a fluid flowing against a static defect are linked by a formal Galilean transformation, here the reservoir defines a privileged reference frame attached to the semiconductor structure and causes markedly different features between the two settings. The consequences on the critical velocity for superfluidity are highlighted and compared to experiments in resonantly driven excitons polaritons.

Charge and statistics of lattice quasiholes from density measurements: a Tree Tensor Network study

We numerically investigate the properties of the quasihole excitations above the bosonic fractional Chern insulator state at filling $ν= 1/2$, in the specific case of the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian with hard-core interactions. For this purpose we employ a Tree Tensor Network technique, which allows us to study systems with up to $N=18$ particles on a $16 \times 16$ lattice and experiencing an additional harmonic confinement. First, we observe the quantization of the quasihole charge at fractional values and its robustness against the shape and strength of the impurity potentials used to create and localize such excitations. Then, we numerically characterize quasihole anyonic statistics by applying a discretized version of the relation connecting the statistics of quasiholes in the lowest Landau level to the depletions they create in the density profile [Macaluso et al., arXiv:1903.03011]. Our results give a direct proof of the anyonic statistics for quasiholes of fractional Chern insulators, starting from a realistic Hamiltonian. Moreover, they provide strong indications that this property can be experimentally probed through local density measurements, making our scheme readily applicable in state-of-the-art experiments with ultracold atoms and superconducting qubits.
