Dichotomies Faster or Slower than exponential are Irrelevant for Skew-Product Flows

We prove that dichotomies given by growth rates that are either faster or slower than exponential either do not occur or are inconsequential in the setting of skew-products with compact base. A similar conclusion is obtained for the nonuniform exponential behavior. To achieve this, we study families of translated linear nonautonomous differential equations for which we prove propagation results. We also study translations of growth rates under a comparison criteria.

Invariant Sets and Boundary Systems of Nonautonomous Differential Inclusions

In this paper we propose a finite-dimensional and deterministic approach to the study of invariant sets of certain nonautonomous differential inclusions naturally arising in the context of random and control dynamical systems, as well as in systems modeling the dynamical propagation of uncertainty. In particular, to any such differential inclusion, we associate a finite-dimensional and deterministic system of nonautonomous ordinary differential equations, which we call the boundary system, due to its following characteristic property: invariant sets of the differential inclusion lift in a unique way to backward invariant unit normal cones of the associated boundary system, and these are even invariant if the boundary is smooth. We further illustrate the strength of this approach in the study of minimal attractors of nonautonomous linear differential inclusions. Under the natural assumption of exponential stability for the unperturbed problem, we establish existence and uniqueness of a minimal attractor for the differential inclusion with fiberwise strictly convex, closed, and continuously differentiable boundaries. We also show that the unit normal bundle is in fact the pullback attractor for the skew-product flow associated to the boundary system which extends to the global attractor when the underlying admits a compact base.

Nonautonomous modelling in Energy Balance Models of climate. Limitations of averaging and climate sensitivity

Starting from a classical Budyko-Sellers-Ghil energy balance model for the average surface temperature of the Earth, a nonautonomous version is designed by allowing the solar irradiance and the cloud cover coefficients to vary with time in a fast timescale, and to exhibit chaos in a precise sense. The dynamics of this model is described in terms of three existing nonautonomous equilibria, the upper one being attracting and representing the present temperature profile. The theory of averaging is used to compare the nonautonomous model and its time-averaged version. We analyse the influence of the qualitative properties of the time-dependent coefficients and develop physically significant error estimates close to the upper attracting solution. Furthermore, previous concepts of two-point response and sensitivity functions are adapted to the nonautonomous context and used to value the increase in temperature when a forcing caused by CO2 and other emissions intervenes.

Persistent synchronization of heterogeneous networks with time-dependent linear diffusive coupling

We study synchronization for linearly coupled temporal networks of heterogeneous time-dependent nonlinear agents via the convergence of attracting trajectories of each node. The results are obtained by constructing and studying the stability of a suitable linear nonautonomous problem bounding the evolution of the synchronization errors. Both, the case of the entire network and only a cluster, are addressed and the persistence of the obtained synchronization against perturbation is also discussed. Furthermore, a sufficient condition for the existence of attracting trajectories of each node is given. In all cases, the considered dependence on time requires only local integrability, which is a very mild regularity assumption. Moreover, our results mainly depend on the network structure and its properties, and achieve synchronization up to a constant in finite time. Hence they are quite suitable for applications. The applicability of the results is showcased via several examples: coupled van-der-Pol/FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators, weighted/signed opinion dynamics, and coupled Lorenz systems.

Global bifurcation of homoclinic solutions

In the analysis of parametrized nonautonomous evolutionary equations, bounded entire solutions are natural candidates for bifurcating objects. Appropriate explicit and sufficient conditions for such branchings, however, require to combine contemporary functional analytical methods from the abstract bifurcation theory for Fredholm operators with tools originating in dynamical systems. This paper establishes alternatives classifying the shape of global bifurcating branches of bounded entire solutions to Carathéodory differential equations. Our approach is based on the parity associated to a path of index 0 Fredholm operators, the global Evans function as a recent tool in nonautonomous bifurcation theory and suitable topologies on spaces of Carathéodory functions.

On the transition between autonomous and nonautonomous systems: the case of FitzHugh-Nagumo's model

This work deals with a parametric linear interpolation between an autonomous FitzHugh-Nagumo model and a nonautonomous skewed-problem with the same fundamental structure. This paradigmatic example allows to construct a family of nonautonomous dynamical systems with an attracting integral manifold and a hyperbolic repelling trajectory located within the nonautonomous set enclosed by the integral manifold. Upon the variation of the parameter the integral manifold collapses, the hyperbolic repelling solution disappears and a unique globally attracting hyperbolic solution arises in what could be considered yet another nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation pattern. Interestingly, the three phenomena do not happen at the same critical value of the parameter, yielding thus an example of a nonautonomous bifurcation in two steps. We provide a mathematical description of the dynamical objects at play and analyze the periodically forced case via rigorously validated continuation.

Tracking nonautonomous attractors in singularly perturbed systems of ODEs with dependence on the fast time

New results on the behaviour of the fast motion in slow-fast systems of ODEs with dependence on the fast time are given in terms of tracking of nonautonomous attractors. Under quite general assumptions, including the uniform ultimate boundedness of the solutions of the layer problems, inflated pullback attractors are considered. In general, one cannot disregard the inflated version of the pullback attractor, but it is possible under the continuity of the fiber projection map of the attractor. %In particular this happens when the attractors of the layer problems are copies of the base, which is the counterpart of an asymptotically stable equilibrium point in the autonomous case. The problem of the limit of the solutions of the slow-fast system at each fixed positive value of the slow time is also treated and in this formulation the critical set is given by the union of the fibers of the pullback attractors. The results can be seen as extensions of the classical Tikhonov theorem to the nonautonomous setting.

Rate-induced tracking for concave or d-concave transitions in a time-dependent environment with application in ecology

This paper investigates biological models that represent the transition equation from a system in the past to a system in the future. It is shown that finite-time Lyapunov exponents calculated along a locally pullback attractive solution are efficient indicators (early-warning signals) of the presence of a tipping point. Precise time-dependent transitions with concave or d-concave variation in the state variable giving rise to scenarios of rate-induced tracking are shown. They are classified depending on the internal dynamics of the set of bounded solutions. Based on this classification, some representative features of these models are investigated by means of a careful numerical analysis.

Critical transitions for scalar nonautonomous systems with concave nonlinearities: some rigorous estimates

The global dynamics of a nonautonomous Carathéodory scalar ordinary differential equation $x'=f(t,x)$, given by a function $f$ which is concave in $x$, is determined by the existence or absence of an attractor-repeller pair of hyperbolic solutions. This property, here extended to a very general setting, is the key point to classify the dynamics of an equation which is a transition between two nonautonomous asypmtotic limiting equations, both with an attractor-repeller pair. The main focus of the paper is to get rigorous criteria guaranteeing tracking (i.e., connection between the attractors of the past and the future) or tipping (absence of connection) for the particular case of equations $x'=f(t,x-Γ(t))$, where $Γ$ is asymptotically constant. Some computer simulations show the accuracy of the obtained estimates, which provide a powerful way to determine the occurrence of critical transitions without relying on a numerical approximation of the (always existing) locally pullback attractor.

Resilience of dynamical systems

Stability is among the most important concepts in dynamical systems. Local stability is well-studied, whereas determining how "globally stable" a nonlinear system is very challenging. Over the last few decades, many different ideas have been developed to address this issue, primarily driven by concrete applications. In particular, several disciplines suggested a web of concepts under the headline "resilience". Unfortunately, there are many different variants and explanations of resilience, and often the definitions are left relatively vague, sometimes even deliberately. Yet, to allow for a structural development of a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across different areas, one has to ensure precise starting definitions and provide a mathematical comparison of different resilience measures. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the most relevant indicators of resilience in the context of continuous dynamical systems, grouped according to their mathematical features. The indicators are also generalized to be applicable to any attractor. These steps are important to ensure a more reliable, quantitatively comparable and reproducible study of resilience in dynamical systems. Furthermore, we also develop a new concept of resilience against certain non-autonomous perturbations to demonstrate, how one can naturally extend our framework. All the indicators are finally compared via the analysis of a classic scalar model from population dynamics to show that direct quantitative application-based comparisons are an immediate consequence of a detailed mathematical analysis.

Topologies of continuity for Carathéodory parabolic PDEs from a dynamical perspective

Systems of non-autonomous parabolic partial differential equations over a bounded domain with nonlinear term of Carathéodory type are considered. Appropriate topologies on sets of Lipschitz Carathéodory maps are defined in order to have a continuous dependence of the mild solutions with respect to the variation of both the nonlinear term and the initial conditions, under different assumptions on the bound-maps of the nonlinearities.

Estimating rate-induced tipping via asymptotic series and a Melnikov-like method

The paper deals with the study of rate-induced tipping in asymptotically autonomous scalar ordinary differential equations. We prove that, in such a tipping scenario, a solution which limits at a hyperbolic stable equilibrium of the past limit-problem loses uniform asymptotic stability and coincides with a solution which limits at a hyperbolic unstable equilibrium of the future limit-problem. We use asymptotic series to approximate such pairs of solutions and characterize the occurrence of a rate-induced tipping by using only solutions calculable on finite time intervals. Moreover, we show that a Melnikov-inspired method employing the asymptotic series allows to asymptotically approximate the tipping point.

Critical transitions in piecewise uniformly continuous concave quadratic ordinary differential equations

A critical transition for a system modelled by a concave quadratic scalar ordinary differential equation occurs when a small variation of the coefficients changes dramatically the dynamics, from the existence of an attractor-repeller pair of hyperbolic solutions to the lack of bounded solutions. In this paper, a tool to analyze this phenomenon for asymptotically nonautonomous ODEs with bounded uniformly continuous or bounded piecewise uniformly continuous coefficients is described, and used to determine the occurrence of critical transitions for certain parametric equations. Some numerical experiments contribute to clarify the applicability of this tool.

Rate-induced tipping and saddle-node bifurcation for a class of quadratic differential equations with nonautonomous asymptotic dynamics

An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induced tipping. A suitable example demonstrates that one can have more than one critical rate, and the existence of the classical attractor-repeller pair may return when $c$ increases.

Monotone skew-product semiflows for Carathéodory differential equations and applications

The first part of the paper is devoted to studying the continuous dependence of the solutions of Carathéodory constant delay differential equations where the vector fields satisfy classical cooperative conditions. As a consequence, when the set of considered vector fields is invariant with respect to the time-translation map, the continuity of the respective induced skew-product semiflows is obtained. These results are important for the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories. In particular, the construction of semicontinuous semiequilibria and equilibria is extended to the context of ordinary and delay Carathéodory differential equations. Under appropriate assumptions of sublinearity, the existence of a unique continuous equilibrium, whose graph coincides with the pullback attractor for the evolution processes, is shown. The conditions under which such a solution is the forward attractor of the considered problem are outlined. Two examples of application of the developed tools are also provided.

Topologies of continuity for Carathéodory delay differential equations with applications in non-autonomous dynamics

We study some already introduced and some new strong and weak topologies of integral type to provide continuous dependence on continuous initial data for the solutions of non-autonomous Carathéodory delay differential equations. As a consequence, we obtain new families of continuous skew-product semiflows generated by delay differential equations whose vector fields belong to such metric topological vector spaces of Lipschitz Carathéodory functions. Sufficient conditions for the equivalence of all or some of the considered strong or weak topologies are also given. Finally, we also provide results of continuous dependence of the solutions as well as of continuity of the skew-product semiflows generated by Carathéodory delay differential equations when the considered phase space is a Sobolev space.

Weak topologies for Carathéodory differential equations. Continuous dependence, exponential Dichotomy and attractors

We introduce new weak topologies and spaces of Carathéodory functions where the solutions of the ordinary differential equations depend continuously on the initial data and vector fields. The induced local skew-product flow is proved to be continuous, and a notion of linearized skew-product flow is provided. Two applications are shown. First, the propagation of the exponential dichotomy over the trajectories of the linearized skew-product flow and the structure of the dichotomy or Sacker-Sell spectrum. Second, how particular bounded absorbing sets for the process defined by a Carathéodory vector field $f$ provide bounded pullback attractors for the processes with vector fields in the alpha-limit set, the omega-limit set or the whole hull of $f$. Conditions for the existence of a pullback or a global attractor for the skew-product semiflow, as well as application examples are also given.

Topologies of $L^p_{loc}$ type for Carathéodory functions with applications in non-autonomous differential equations

Metric topological vector spaces of Carathéodory functions and topologies of $L^p_{loc}$ type are introduced, depending on a suitable set of moduli of continuity. Theorems of continuous dependence on initial data for the solutions of non-autonomous Carathéodory differential equations are proved in such new topological structures. As a consequence, new families of continuous linearized skew-product semiflows are provided in the Carathéodory spaces.
