Hidden symmetries for transparent de Sitter space

It is known that odd-dimensional de Sitter space acts as a transparent potential for free fields. Previous studies have explained this phenomena by relating de Sitter free field equations of motion to the time-independent Schrodinger equation with known transparent potentials. In this work we show that de Sitter's transparency is a consequence of an infinite set of "hidden" symmetries. These symmetries arise from an accidental symmetry for the zero-mode of matter fields, as well as the boost isometry of de Sitter space. For simplicity, we consider the case of massive Klein-Gordon theory. We show that the Noether charges associated with these hidden symmetries distinguish the two linearly-independent solutions of the free field wave equation in the asymptotic past and future of de Sitter. Conservation of these charges requires that the asymptotic behavior of any solution be identical, up to a constant phase, in the future and the past, which is the property of transparency. In the quantized theory, these charges act trivially on particle states belonging to the in/out vacuum Fock space. For particle states constructed from other vacua, the action of the charges generates particles. We comment on how these hidden symmetries may be present in interacting theories.

On higher spin symmetries in de Sitter QFTs

We consider the consequences of global higher-spin symmetries in quantum field theories on a fixed de Sitter background of spacetime dimension $D \ge 3$. These symmetries enhance the symmetry group associated with the isometries of the de Sitter background and thus strongly constrain the dynamics of the theory. In particular, we consider the case when a higher spin charge acts linearly on a scalar operator to leading order in a Fefferman-Graham expansion near the future/past conformal boundaries. We show that this implies that the expectation values of the operator inserted near the boundaries are asymptotically Gaussian. Thus, these operators have trivial cosmological spectra, and on global de Sitter these operators have only Gaussian correlations between operators inserted near future/past infinity. The latter result may be interpreted as an analogue of the Coleman-Mandula theorem for QFTs on de Sitter spacetime.

Fluctuations in a Cosmology with a Space-Like Singularity and their Gauge Theory Dual Description

We consider a time-dependent deformation of anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time which contains a cosmological "singularity" - a space-like region of high curvature. Making use of the AdS/CFT correspondence we can map the bulk dynamics onto the boundary. The boundary theory has a time dependent coupling constant which becomes small at times when the bulk space-time is highly curved. We investigate the propagation of small fluctuations of a test scalar field from early times before the bulk singularity to late times after the singularity. Under the assumption that the AdS/CFT correspondence extends to deformed AdS space-times, we can map the bulk evolution of the scalar field onto the evolution of the boundary gauge field. The time evolution of linearized fluctuations is well defined in the boundary theory as long as the coupling remains finite, so that we can extend the boundary perturbations to late times after the singularity. Assuming that the spacetime in the future of the singularity has a weakly coupled region near the boundary, we reconstruct the bulk fluctuations after the singularity crossing making use of generic properties of boundary-to-bulk propagators. Finally, we extract the spectrum of the fluctuations at late times given some initial spectrum. We find that the spectral index is unchanged, but the amplitude increases due to the squeezing of the fluctuations during the course of the evolution. This investigation can teach us important lessons on how the spectrum of cosmological perturbations passes through a bounce which is singular from the bulk point of view but which is resolved using an ultraviolet complete theory of quantum gravity.

Cosmic Microwave Background Spectral Distortions from Cosmic String Loops

Cosmic string loops contain cusps which decay by emitting bursts of particles. A significant fraction of the released energy is in the form of photons. These photons are injected non-thermally and can hence cause spectral distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Under the assumption that cusps are robust against gravitational back-reaction, we compute the fractional energy density released as photons in the redshift interval where such non-thermal photon injection causes CMB spectral distortions. Whereas current constraints on such spectral distortions are not strong enough to constrain the string tension, future missions such as the PIXIE experiment will be able to provide limits which rule out a range of string tensions between $G μ\sim 10^{-15}$ and $G μ\sim 10^{-12}$, thus ruling out particle physics models yielding these kind of intermediate-scale cosmic strings.

Boundary-to-bulk maps for AdS causal wedges and the Reeh-Schlieder property in holography

In order to better understand how AdS holography works for sub-regions, we formulate a holographic version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem for the simple case of an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem asserts that the set of states constructed by acting on a suitable vacuum state with boundary observables contained within any subset of the boundary is dense in the Hilbert space of the bulk theory. To prove this theorem we need two ingredients which are themselves of interest. First, we prove a purely bulk version of Reeh-Schlieder theorem for an AdS Klein-Gordon field. This theorem relies on the analyticity properties of certain vacuum states. Our second ingredient is a boundary-to-bulk map for local observables on an AdS causal wedge. This mapping is achieved by simple integral kernels which construct bulk observables from convolutions with boundary operators. Our analysis improves on previous constructions of AdS boundary-to-bulk maps in that it is formulated entirely in Lorentz signature without the need for large analytic continuation of spatial coordinates. Both our Reeh-Schlieder theorem and boundary-to-bulk maps may be applied to globally well-defined states constructed from the usual AdS vacuum as well more singular states such as the local vacuum of an AdS causal wedge which is singular on the horizon.

On cosmic hair and "de Sitter breaking" in linearized quantum gravity

We quantize linearized Einstein-Hilbert gravity on de Sitter backgrounds in a covariant gauge. We verify the existence of a maximally-symmetric (i.e.de Sitter-invariant) Hadamard state $Ω$ for all globally hyperbolic de Sitter backgrounds in all spacetime dimensions $D \ge 4$ by constructing the state's 2-point function in closed form. This 2-pt function is explicitly maximally symmetric. We prove an analogue of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem for linearized gravity. Using these results we prove a cosmic no-hair theorem for linearized gravitons: for any state in the Hilbert space constructed from $Ω$, the late-time behavior of local observable correlation functions reduces to those of $Ω$ at an exponential rate with respect to proper time. We also provide the explicitly maximally-symmetric graviton 2-pt functions in a class of generalized de Donder gauges suitable for use in non-linear perturbation theory. Along the way we clarify a few technical aspects which led previous authors to conclude that these 2-pt functions do not exist.

Mutual information between thermo-field doubles and disconnected holographic boundaries

We use mutual information as a measure of the entanglement between 'physical' and thermo-field double degrees of freedom in field theories at finite temperature. We compute this "thermo-mutual information" in simple toy models: a quantum mechanics two-site spin chain, a two dimensional massless fermion, and a two dimensional holographic system. In holographic systems, the thermo-mutual information is related to minimal surfaces connecting the two disconnected boundaries of an eternal black hole. We derive a number of salient features of this thermo-mutual information, including that it is UV finite, positive definite and bounded from above by the standard mutual information for the thermal ensemble. We relate the construction of the reduced density matrices used to define the thermo-mutual information to the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, ensuring that all our objects are well defined in Euclidean and Lorentzian signature.

Perturbative S-matrix for massive scalar fields in global de Sitter space

We construct a perturbative S-matrix for interacting massive scalar fields in global de Sitter space. Our S-matrix is formulated in terms of asymptotic particle states in the far past and future, taking appropriate care for light fields whose wavefunctions decay only very slowly near the de Sitter conformal boundaries. An alternative formulation expresses this S-matrix in terms of residues of poles in analytically-continued Euclidean correlators (computed in perturbation theory), making it clear that the standard Minkowski-space result is obtained in the flat-space limit. Our S-matrix transforms properly under CPT, is invariant under the de Sitter isometries and perturbative field redefinitions, and is unitary. This unitarity implies a de Sitter version of the optical theorem. We explicitly verify these properties to second order in the coupling for a general cubic interaction, including both tree- and loop-level contributions. Contrary to other statements in the literature, we find that a particle of any positive mass may decay at tree level to any number of particles, each of arbitrary positive masses. In particular, even very light fields (in the complementary series of de Sitter representations) are not protected from tree-level decays.

de Sitter invariance of the dS graviton vacuum

The two-point function of linearized gravitons on de Sitter space is infrared divergent in the standard transverse traceless synchronous gauge defined by $k=0$ cosmological coordinates (also called conformal or Poincare coordinates). We show that this divergence can be removed by adding a linearized diffeomorphism to each mode function; i.e., by an explicit change of gauge. It follows that the graviton vacuum state is well-defined and de Sitter invariant in agreement with various earlier arguments.

The IR stability of de Sitter QFT: Physical initial conditions

This work uses Lorentz-signature in-in perturbation theory to analyze the late-time behavior of correlators in time-dependent interacting massive scalar field theory in de Sitter space. We study a scenario recently considered by Krotov and Polyakov in which the coupling $g$ turns on smoothly at finite time, starting from $g=0$ in the far past where the state is taken to be the (free) Bunch-Davies vacuum. Our main result is that the resulting correlators (which we compute at the one-loop level) approach those of the interacting Hartle-Hawking state at late times. We argue that similar results should hold for other physically-motivated choices of initial conditions. This behavior is to be expected from recent quantum "no hair" theorems for interacting massive scalar field theory in de Sitter space which established similar results to all orders in perturbation theory for a dense set of states in the Hilbert space. Our current work i) indicates that physically motivated initial conditions lie in this dense set, ii) provides a Lorentz-signature counter-part to the Euclidean techniques used to prove such theorems, and iii) provides an explicit example of the relevant renormalization techniques.

On the Equivalence between Euclidean and In-In Formalisms in de Sitter QFT

We study the relation between two sets of correlators in interacting quantum field theory on de Sitter space. The first are correlators computed using in-in perturbation theory in the expanding cosmological patch of de Sitter space (also known as the conformal patch, or the Poincaré patch), and for which the free propagators are taken to be those of the free Euclidean vacuum. The second are correlators obtained by analytic continuation from Euclidean de Sitter; i.e., they are correlators in the fully interacting Hartle-Hawking state. We give an analytic argument that these correlators coincide for interacting massive scalar fields with any $m^2 > 0$. We also verify this result via direct calculation in simple examples. The correspondence holds diagram by diagram, and at any finite value of an appropriate Pauli-Villars regulator mass M. Along the way, we note interesting connections between various prescriptions for perturbation theory in general static spacetimes with bifurcate Killing horizons.

The IR stability of de Sitter QFT: results at all orders

We show that the Hartle-Hawking vacuum for theories of interacting massive scalars in de Sitter space is both perturbatively well-defined and stable in the IR. Correlation functions in this state may be computed on the Euclidean section and Wick-rotated to Lorentz-signature. The results are manifestly de Sitter-invariant and contain only the familiar UV singularities. More importantly, the connected parts of all Lorentz-signature correlators decay at large separations of their arguments. Our results apply to all cases in which the free Euclidean vacuum is well defined, including scalars with masses belonging to both the complementary and principal series of $SO(D,1)$. This suggests that interacting QFTs in de Sitter -- including higher spin fields -- are perturbatively IR-stable at least when i) the Euclidean vacuum of the zero-coupling theory exists and ii) corresponding Lorentz-signature zero-coupling correlators decay at large separations. This work has significant overlap with a paper by Stefan Hollands, which is being released simultaneously.

The IR stability of de Sitter: Loop corrections to scalar propagators

We compute 1-loop corrections to Lorentz-signature de Sitter-invariant 2-point functions defined by the interacting Euclidean vacuum for massive scalar quantum fields with cubic and quartic interactions. Our results apply to all masses for which the free Euclidean de Sitter vacuum is well-defined, including values in both the complimentary and the principal series of SO(D,1). In dimensions where the interactions are renormalizeable we provide absolutely convergent integral representations of the corrections. These representations suffice to analytically extract the leading behavior of the 2-point functions at large separations and may also be used for numerical computations. The interacting propagators decay at long distances at least as fast as one would naively expect, suggesting that such interacting de Sitter invariant vacuua are well-defined and are well-behaved in the IR. In fact, in some cases the interacting propagators decay faster than any free propagator with any value of $M^2> 0$.

Group Averaging for de Sitter free fields

Perturbative gravity about global de Sitter space is subject to linearization-stability constraints. Such constraints imply that quantum states of matter fields couple consistently to gravity {\it only} if the matter state has vanishing de Sitter charges; i.e., only if the state is invariant under the symmetries of de Sitter space. As noted by Higuchi, the usual Fock spaces for matter fields contain no de Sitter-invariant states except the vacuum, though a new Hilbert space of de Sitter invariant states can be constructed via so-called group-averaging techniques. We study this construction for free scalar fields of arbitrary positive mass in any dimension, and for linear vector and tensor gauge fields in any dimension. Our main result is to show in each case that group averaging converges for states containing a sufficient number of particles. We consider general $N$-particle states with smooth wavefunctions, though we obtain somewhat stronger results when the wavefunctions are finite linear combinations of de Sitter harmonics. Along the way we obtain explicit expressions for general boost matrix elements in a familiar basis.

Group Averaging of massless scalar fields in 1+1 de Sitter

Perturbative gravity in global de Sitter space is subject to so-called linearization stability constraints: If they are to couple consistently to the gravitational field, quantum states must be invariant under the de Sitter isometries. While standard Fock spaces contain no de Sitter-invariant states apart from (possibly) the vacuum, a full Hilbert space of de Sitter-invariant quantum states can be constructed via group averaging techiniques. We re-examine the simple toy model of de Sitter group averaging given by the free 1+1 scalar field, expanding on an earlier analysis by Higuchi. Our purpose is twofold: to include the scalar zero-mode, and to explicitly count the number of de Sitter-invariant states as a function of an appropriately defined energy.

Effect of Differential Rotation on the Maximum Mass of Neutron Stars: Realistic Nuclear Equations of State

The merger of binary neutron stars is likely to lead to differentially rotating remnants. In this paper, we survey several cold nuclear equations of state (EOSs) and numerically construct models of differentially rotating neutron stars in general relativity. For each EOS we tabulate maximum allowed masses as a function of the degree of differential rotation. We also determine effective polytropic indices, and compare the maximum allowed masses with those for the corresponding polytropes. We consistently find larger mass increases for the polytropes, but even for the nuclear EOSs we typically find maximum masses 50% higher than the corresponding values for nonrotating (TOV) stars. We evaluate our findings for the six observed binary neutron star (pulsar) systems, including the recently discovered binary pulsar J0737-3039. For each EOS we determine whether their merger will automatically lead to prompt collapse to a black hole, or whether the remnant can be supported against collapse by uniform rotation (possibly as a supramassive star) or differential rotation (possibly as a hypermassive star). For hypermassive stars, delayed collapse to a black hole is likely. For the most recent EOSs we survey the merger remnants can all be supported by rotation against prompt collapse, but their actual fate will depend on the nonequilibrium dynamics of the coalescence event. Gravitational wave observations of coalescing binary neutron stars may be able to distinguish these outcomes -- no, delayed or prompt collapse -- and thereby constrain possible EOSs.
