Scaling theory of the Kondo screening cloud

A scaling form for the local susceptibility, derived from renormalization group arguments, is proposed. The scale over which the uniform part of this scaling form varies can be viewed as a definition of the Kondo ``screening cloud" $\sim ξ_K$. The proposed scaling form interpolates between Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) results in the high temperature limit, $T\gg T_K$, and Fermi liquid results in the low temperature, long-distance limit, $T\ll T_K$, $r\gg ξ_K$. The predicted form of the Knight shift is longer range at low temperatures where the screening cloud has formed, than at high temperatures where it has not. Using weak and strong coupling perturbation theory combined with large scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results we study the validity of the finite size version of the scaling form at $T=0$. We explicitly extract a length scale proportional to the Kondo length scale, $ξ_K$. The numerical results are in good agreement with the proposed scaling form and confirm the existence of the Kondo screening cloud.

Conformal Field Theory Approach to the Kondo Effect

Recently, a new approach, based on boundary conformal field theory, has been applied to a variety of quantum impurity problems in condensed matter and particle physics. A particularly enlightening example is the multi-channel Kondo problem. In this review some earlier approaches to the Kondo problem are discussed, the needed material on boundary conformal field theory is developed and then this new method is applied to the multi-channel Kondo problem.

Is there an exponentially large Kondo screening cloud ?

We make a precise scaling conjecture, based on renormalization group ideas, regarding the screening cloud around an impurity spin in the Kondo effect and test it numerically using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method.

Theory of Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Haldane Gap Antiferromagnets

A theory of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is developed for integer-spin, one-dimensional antiferromagnets, which exhibit the Haldane gap. We consider free boson, free fermion and non-linear sigma model approaches, all of which give similar results. Detailed anisotropy and magnetic field dependence is calculated and compared with experiment.

Impurities in S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chains: Consequences for Neutron Scattering and Knight Shift

Non-magnetic impurities in an S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain are studied using boundary conformal field theory techniques and finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate the static structure function, S_imp(k), measured in neutron scattering and the local susceptibility, chi_i measured in Knight shift experiments. S_imp(k) becomes quite large near the antiferromagnetic wave-vector, and exhibits much stronger temperature dependence than the bulk structure function. χ_i has a large component which alternates and increases as a function of distance from the impurity.

Phase Transitions in the One-Dimensional Pair-Hopping Model: a Renormalization Group Study

The phase diagram of a one-dimensional tight-binding model with a pair-hopping term (amplitude V) has been the subject of some controvery. Using two-loop renormalization group equations and the density matrix renormalization group with lengths L<=60, we argue that no spin-gap transition occurs at half-filling for positive V, contrary to recent claims. However, we point out that away from half-filling, a *phase-separation* transition occurs at finite V. This transition and the spin-gap transition occuring at half-filling and *negative* V are analyzed numerically.

Conformal Field Theory Approach to the 2-Impurity Kondo Problem: Comparison with Numerical Renormalization Group Results

Numerical renormalization group and conformal field theory work indicate that the two impurity Kondo Hamiltonian has a non-Fermi liquid critical point separating the Kondo-screening phase from the inter-impurity singlet phase when particle-hole (P-H) symmetry is maintained. We clarify the circumstances under which this critical point occurs, pointing out that there are two types of P-H symmetry. Only one of them guarantees the occurance of the critical point. Much of the previous numerical work was done on models with the other type of P-H symmetry. We analyse this critical point using the boundary conformal field theory technique. The finite-size spectrum is presented in detail and compared with about 50 energy levels obtained using the numerical renormalization group. Various Green's functions, general renormalization group behaviour, and a hidden $SO(7)$ are analysed.

Impurities in $s=1$ Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

The $s=1$ Heisenberg Antiferromagnet is studied in the presence of two kinds of local impurities. First, a perturbed antiferromagnetic bond with $J'\ne J$ at the center of an even-length open chain is considered. Using the density matrix renormalization group method we find that, for sufficiently strong or weak $J'$, a bound state is localized at the impurity site, giving rise to an energy level in the Haldane gap. The energy of the bound state is in agreement with perturbative results, based on $s=1/2$ chain-end excitations, both in the weak and strong coupling limit. In a region around the uniform limit, $J'=J$, no states are found with energy below the Haldane gap. Secondly, a $s=1/2$ impurity at the center of an otherwise even-length open chain is considered. The coupling to the $s=1/2$ impurity is varied. Bound states in the Haldane gap are found {\it only} for sufficiently weak (antiferromagnetic) coupling. For a $s=1/2$ impurity coupled with a strong (antiferromagnetic) bond, {\it no} states are found in the Haldane. Our results are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments on doped NENP and Y$_2$BaNiO$_5$.

A Plane of Weakly Coupled Heisenberg Chains: Theoretical Arguments and Numerical Calculations

The $S=1/2$, nearest-neighbor, quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with spatially anisotropic couplings is reconsidered, with particular attention to the following question: at T=0, does Néel orderdevelop at infinitesimal interchain coupling, or is there a nonzero critical coupling? A heuristic renormalization group argument is presented which suggests that previous theoretical answers to that question are incorrect or at least incomplete, and that the answer is not universal but rather depends on the microscopic details of the model under consideration. Numerical investigations of the nearest-neighbor model are carried out {\it via} zero-temperature series expansions about Ising and dimer Hamiltonians. The results are entirely consistent with a vanishing critical interchain coupling ratio $R_c$; if $R_c$ is finite, it is unlikely to substantially exceed 0.02.

The Fermi Edge Singularity and Boundary Condition Changing Operators

The boundary conformal field theory approach to quantum impurity problems is used to study the Fermi edge singularity, occuring in the X-ray adsorption probablility. The deep-hole creation operator, in the effective low-energy theory, changes the boundary condition on the conduction electrons. By a conformal mapping, the dimension of such an operator is related to the groundstate energy for a finite system with different boundary conditions at the two ends. The Fermi edge singularity is solved using this method, for the Luttinger liquid including back-scattering and for the multi-channel Kondo problem.

Susceptibility of the Spin 1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain

Highly accurate results are presented for the susceptibility, $χ(T)$ of the $s=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain for all temperatures, using the Bethe ansatz and field theory methods. After going through a rounded peak, $χ(T)$ approaches its asympotic zero-temperature value with infinite slope.

Conformal Field Theory Approach to Quantum Impurity Problems

A brief review is given of a new method for studying the critical behavior of quantum impurity problems, based on conformal field theory techniques, which I developed with Andreas Ludwig. Some results on the overscreened Kondo problem are reviewed. It is shown that the simple open and periodic fixed points, which occur in quantum spin chain impurity models, are related to each other by fusion.

Tunneling in Quantum Wires: a Boundary Conformal Field Theory Approach

Tunneling through a localized barrier in a one-dimensional interacting electron gas has been studied recently using Luttinger liquid techniques. Stable phases with zero or unit transmission occur, as well as critical points with universal fractional transmission whose properties have only been calculated approximately, using a type of ``$ε$-expansion''. It may be possible to calculate the universal properties of these critical points exactly using the recent boundary conformal field theory technique, although difficulties arise from the $\infty$ number of conformal towers in this $c=4$ theory and the absence of any apparent ``fusion'' principle. Here, we formulate the problem efficiently in this new language, and recover the critical properties of the stable phases.

Monopole-Catalysed Baryon Decay: A Boundary Conformal Field Theory Approach

Monopole-mediated baryon number violation, the Callan-Rubakov effect, is reexamined using boundary conformal field theory techniques. It is shown that the low-energy behaviour is described simply by free fermions with a conformally invariant boundary condition at the dyon location. When the number of fermion flavours is greater than two, this boundary condition is of a non-trivial type which has not been elucidated previously.
