Multivariate regression and fit function uncertainty

This article describes a multivariate polynomial regression method where the uncertainty of the input parameters are approximated with Gaussian distributions, derived from the central limit theorem for large weighted sums, directly from the training sample. The estimated uncertainties can be propagated into the optimal fit function, as an alternative to the statistical bootstrap method. This uncertainty can be propagated further into a loss function like quantity, with which it is possible to calculate the expected loss function, and allows to select the optimal polynomial degree with statistical significance. Combined with simple phase space splitting methods, it is possible to model most features of the training data even with low degree polynomials or constants.

Green's function based unparameterised multi-dimensional kernel density and likelihood ratio estimator

This paper introduces a probability density estimator based on Green's function identities. A density model is constructed under the sole assumption that the probability density is differentiable. The method is implemented as a binary likelihood estimator for classification purposes, so issues such as mis-modeling and overtraining are also discussed. The identity behind the density estimator can be interpreted as a real-valued, non-scalar kernel method which is able to reconstruct differentiable density functions.

Heavy Quark Production at HERA

Heavy flavour production is one of the key components of the HERA II physics programme. While most of the results presented use leptons or the reconstruction of charmed mesons to identify heavy flavour production, both the H1 and ZEUS experiments now have working microvertex detectors that are being used more and more. In this talk I will summarise a selection of the recent results obtained by the two collaborations.

Beauty photoproduction using decays into electrons at HERA

Photoproduction of beauty quarks in events with two jets and an electron associated with one of the jets has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The fractions of events containing b quarks, and also of events containing c quarks, were extracted from a likelihood fit using variables sensitive to electron identification as well as to semileptonic decays. Total and differential cross sections for beauty and charm production were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations and Monte Carlo models.

QCD Studies at HERA

I present a small selection of the many QCD studies that have been performed at HERA. I concentrate on results that have been made available in the past year. Results are presented on the QCD description of the parton density functions, determinations of alpha_S, jets and heavy flavour production. Where possible comparisons are made with next to leading order (NLO) QCD predictions. The neutral and charged current cross sections at very high Q^2 are also discussed.
