Group actions on spheres with rank one isotropy

Let G be a rank two finite group, and let $\cH$ denote the family of rank one p-subgroups of G, at all primes where G has p-rank two. We show that a rank two finite group G which satisfies certain group-theoretic conditions admits a finite G-CW-complex X with isotropy in $\cH$, whose fixed sets are homotopy spheres. Our construction provides an infinite family of new non-linear G-CW-complex examples.

Topological spherical space forms

Free actions of finite groups on spheres give rise to topological spherical space forms. The existence and classification problems for space forms have a long history in the geometry and topology of manifolds. In this article, we present a survey of some of the main results and a guide to the literature.

Homotopy Representations over the Orbit Category

Let G be a finite group. The unit sphere in a finite-dimensional orthogonal G-representation motivates the definition of homotopy representations, due to tom Dieck. We introduce an algebraic analogue, and establish its basic properties including the Borel-Smith conditions and realization by finite G-CW-complexes.

Recognizing products of surfaces and simply connected 4-manifolds

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed smooth 6-manifold N to be diffeomorphic to a product of a surface F and a simply connected 4-manifold M in terms of basic invariants like the fundamental group and cohomological data. Any isometry of the intersection form of M is realized by a self-diffeomorphism of M x F.

Coarse Geometry and P. A. Smith Theory

We define a generalization of the fixed point set, called the bounded fixed set, for a group acting by isometries on a metric space. An analogue of the P. A. Smith theorem is proved for metric spaces of finite asymptotic dimension, which relates the coarse homology of the bounded fixed set to the coarse homology of the total space.

Acyclic Chain complexes over the Orbit Category

Chain complexes of finitely generated free modules over orbit categories provide natural algebraic models for finite G-CW complexes with prescribed isotropy. We prove a p-hypoelementary Dress induction theorem for K-theory over the orbit category of a finite group, and use it to re-interpret some results of Oliver and Kropholler-Wall on acyclic complexes.

Surgery obstructions on closed manifolds and the Inertia subgroup

The Wall surgery obstruction groups have two interesting geometrically defined subgroups, consisting of the surgery obstructions between closed manifolds, and the inertial elements. We show that the inertia group $I_{n+1}(π,w)$ and the closed manifold subgroup $C_{n+1}(π,w)$ are equal in dimensions $n+1\geq 6$, for any finitely-presented group $π$ and any orientation character $w\colon π\to \cy 2$.

Induction and computation of Bass Nil Groups for finite groups

Let G be a finite group. We show that the Bass Nil-groups $NK_n(RG)$, $n \in Z$, are generated from the p-subgroups of G by induction maps, certain twisting maps depending on elements in the centralizers of the p-subgroups, and the Verschiebung homomorphisms. As a consequence, the groups $NK_n(RG)$ are generated by induction from elementary subgroups. For $NK_0(ZG)$ we get an improved estimate of the torsion exponent.

Conjugation spaces and 4-manifolds

We show that 4-dimensional conjugation manifolds are all obtained from branched 2-fold coverings of knotted surfaces in Z/2-homology 4-spheres.

Equivariant CW-Complexes and the Orbit Category

We give a general framework for studying G-CW complexes via the orbit category. As an application we show that the symmetric group G=S_5 admits a finite G-CW complex X homotopy equivalent to a sphere, with cyclic isotropy subgroups.

Equivariant Bundles and Isotropy Representations

We introduce a new construction, the isotropy groupoid, to organize the orbit data for split $Γ$-spaces. We show that equivariant principal $G$-bundles over split $Γ$-CW complexes $X$ can be effectively classified by means of representations of their isotropy groupoids. For instance, if the quotient complex $A=Γ\backslash X$ is a graph, with all edge stabilizers toral subgroups of $Γ$, we obtain a purely combinatorial classification of bundles with structural group $G$ a compact connected Lie group. If $G$ is abelian, our approach gives combinatorial and geometric descriptions of some results of Lashof-May-Segal and Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson.

Topological 4-manifolds with geometrically 2-dimensional fundamental groups

Closed oriented 4-manifolds with the same geometrically 2-dimensional fundamental group (satisfying certain properties) are classified up to $s$-cobordism by their $w_2$-type, equivariant intersection form and the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant. As an application, we obtain a complete homeomorphism classification of closed oriented 4-manifolds with solvable Baumslag-Solitar fundamental groups, including a precise realization result.

Free Actions of Finite Groups on $S^n \times S^n$

Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a non-abelian extension $Γ$ of $S^1$ by $Z/p \times Z/p$, and prove that any finite subgroup of $Γ$ acts freely and smoothly on $S^{2p-1} \times S^{2p-1}$. In particular, for each odd prime $p$ we obtain free smooth actions of infinitely many non-metacyclic rank two $p$-groups on $S^{2p-1} \times S^{2p-1}$. These results arise from a general approach to the existence problem for finite group actions on products of equidimensional spheres.

Examples of Free Actions on Products of Spheres

We construct a non-abelian extension $Γ$ of $S^1$ by $\cy 3 \times \cy 3$, and prove that $Γ$ acts freely and smoothly on $S^{5} \times S^{5}$. This gives new actions on $S^{5} \times S^{5}$ for an infinite family $\cP$ of finite 3-groups. We also show that any finite odd order subgroup of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ admits a free smooth action on $S^{11}\times S^{11}$. This gives new actions on $S^{11}\times S^{11}$ for an infinite family $\cE $ of finite groups. We explain the significance of these families $\cP $, $\cE $ for the general existence problem, and correct some mistakes in the literature.
