Efficient higher-order matrix product operators for time evolution

We introduce a systematic construction of higher-order matrix product operator (MPO) approximations of the time evolution operator for generic (short and long range) one-dimensional Hamiltonians. We demonstrate the utility of our construction, by showing an order of magnitude speedup in simulation cost compared to conventional first-order MPO time evolution schemes.

Symmetry-protected trivial phases and quantum phase transitions in an anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin-1 biquadratic model

The ground state phase diagram is obtained for an antiferromagnetic spin-1 anisotropic biquadratic model. With the help of symmetry and duality transformations, three symmetry-protected trivial phases and one dimerized symmetry breaking phase are found. Local and nonlocal order parameters are identified to characterize these phases. Quantum phase transitions between the symmetry-protected trivial phases belong to the Gaussian universality class with central charge c = 1, and quantum phase transitions from the symmetry-protected trivial phases to the dimerized phase belong to the Ising universality class with central charge c = 1/2. In addition, the model admits three characteristic lines of factorized ground states, which are located in the symmetry-protected trivial phases instead of a symmetry breaking phase, in sharp contrast to other known cases.

Fractional Excitations in Cold Atomic Gases

We study the behavior of excitations in the tilted one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. In the phase with broken symmetry, fundamental excitations are domain-walls which show fractional statistics. Using perturbation theory, we derive an analytic model for the time evolution of these fractional excitations, and demonstrate the existence of a repulsively bound state above a critical center of mass momentum. The validity of the perturbative analysis is confirmed by the use of t- DMRG simulations. These findings open the path for experimental detection of fractional particles in cold atomic gases.

Statistically induced Phase Transitions and Anyons in 1D Optical Lattices

Anyons - particles carrying fractional statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions - have been conjectured to exist in low dimensional systems. In the context of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), quasi-particles made of electrons take the role of anyons whose statistical exchange phase is fixed by the filling factor. Here we propose an experimental setup to create anyons in one-dimensional lattices with fully tuneable exchange statistics. In our setup, anyons are created by bosons with occupation-dependent hopping amplitudes, which can be realized by assisted Raman tunneling. The statistical angle can thus be controlled in situ by modifying the relative phase of external driving fields. This opens the fascinating possibility of smoothly transmuting bosons via anyons into fermions and of inducing a phase transition by the mere control of the particle statistics as a free parameter. In particular, we demonstrate how to induce a quantum phase transition from a superfluid into an exotic Mott-like state where the particle distribution exhibits plateaus at fractional densities.

Spinful bosons in an optical lattice

We analyze the behavior of cold spin-1 particles with antiferromagnetic interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice using density matrix renormalization group calculations. Correlation functions and the dimerization are shown and we also present results for the energy gap between ground state and the spin excited states. We confirm the anticipated phase diagram, with Mott-insulating regions of alternating dimerized S=1 chains for odd particle density versus on-site singlets for even density. We find no evidence for any additional ordered phases in the physically accessible region, however for sufficiently large spin interaction, on-site singlet pairs dominate leading, for odd density, to a breakdown of the Mott insulator or, for even density, a real-space singlet superfluid.
