A note on PL-disks and rationally slice knots

We give infinitely many examples of manifold-knot pairs (Y, J) such that Y bounds an integer homology ball, J does not bound a non-locally-flat PL-disk in any integer homology ball, but J does bound a smoothly embedded disk in a rational homology ball. The proof relies on formal properties of involutive Heegaard Floer homology.

Heegaard Floer homology and plane curves with non-cuspidal singularities

We study possible configurations of singular points occuring on general algebraic curves in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ via Floer theory. To achieve this, we describe a general formula for the $H_{1}$-action on the knot Floer complex of the knotification of a link in $S^3$, in terms of natural actions on the link Floer complex of the original link. This result may be interest on its own.

Duality and mapping tori in Heegaard Floer homology

We show that the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology satisfies a strong version of Atiyah's duality axiom for a TQFT. As an application, we compute some Heegaard Floer mixed invariants of 4-dimensional mapping tori in terms of Lefschetz numbers on $HF^+$.

Transverse invariants and exotic surfaces in the 4-ball

Using 1-twist rim surgery, we construct infinitely many smoothly embedded, orientable surfaces in the 4-ball bounding a knot in the 3-sphere that are pairwise topologically isotopic, but not ambient diffeomorphic. We distinguish the surfaces using the maps they induce on perturbed sutured Floer homology. Along the way, we show that the cobordism map induced by an ascending surface in a Weinstein cobordism preserves the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology.

New Heegaard Floer slice genus and clasp number bounds

We define several concordance invariants using knot Floer homology which give improvements over known slice genus and clasp number bounds from Heegaard Floer homology. We also prove that the involutive correction terms of Hendricks and Manolescu give both a slice genus and a clasp number bound.

Knot cobordisms, bridge index, and torsion in Floer homology

Given a connected cobordism between two knots in the 3-sphere, our main result is an inequality involving torsion orders of the knot Floer homology of the knots, and the number of local maxima and the genus of the cobordism. This has several topological applications: The torsion order gives lower bounds on the bridge index and the band-unlinking number of a knot, the fusion number of a ribbon knot, and the number of minima appearing in a slice disk of a knot. It also gives a lower bound on the number of bands appearing in a ribbon concordance between two knots. Our bounds on the bridge index and fusion number are sharp for $T_{p,q}$ and $T_{p,q}\# \overline{T}_{p,q}$, respectively. We also show that the bridge index of $T_{p,q}$ is minimal within its concordance class. The torsion order bounds a refinement of the cobordism distance on knots, which is a metric. As a special case, we can bound the number of band moves required to get from one knot to the other. We show knot Floer homology also gives a lower bound on Sarkar's ribbon distance, and exhibit examples of ribbon knots with arbitrarily large ribbon distance from the unknot.

Concordance surgery and the Ozsváth-Szabó 4-manifold invariant

We compute the effect of concordance surgery, a generalization of knot surgery defined using a self-concordance of a knot, on the Ozsváth-Szabó 4-manifold invariant. The formula involves the graded Lefschetz number of the concordance map on knot Floer homology. The proof uses the sutured Floer TQFT, and a version of sutured Floer homology perturbed by a 2-form.

A graph TQFT for hat Heegaard Floer homology

We construct maps on hat Heegaard Floer homology for cobordisms decorated with graphs. The graph TQFT allows for cobordisms with disconnected ends. Our construction uses Juhász's sutured Floer TQFT. We compute the maps for several elementary graph cobordisms. As an application, we compute the action of the fundamental group on hat Heegaard Floer homology.

Distinguishing slice disks using knot Floer homology

We study the classification of slice disks of knots up to isotopy and diffeomorphism using an invariant in knot Floer homology. We compute the invariant of a slice disk obtained by deform-spinning, and show that it can be effectively used to distinguish non-isotopic slice disks with diffeomorphic complements. Given a slice disk of a composite knot, we define a numerical stable diffeomorphism invariant called the rank. This can be used to show that a slice disk is not a boundary connected sum, and to give lower bounds on the complexity of certain hyperplane sections of the slice disk.

Contact handles, duality, and sutured Floer homology

We give an explicit construction of the Honda--Kazez--Matić gluing maps in terms of contact handles. We use this to prove a duality result for turning a sutured manifold cobordism around, and to compute the trace in the sutured Floer TQFT. We also show that the decorated link cobordism maps on the hat version of link Floer homology defined by the first author via sutured manifold cobordisms and by the second author via elementary cobordisms agree.

Graph cobordisms and Heegaard Floer homology

We construct a graph TQFT for the minus flavor of Heegaard Floer homology. Our graph TQFT extends Ozsváth and Szabó's TQFT for closed and connected 3-manifolds, and allows for cobordisms with disconnected ends. As an application, we give an explicit formula for the chain homotopy type of the $π_1$-action on Heegaard Floer homology. We show that on homology the $π_1$-action is trivial on the plus, minus and infinity flavors, but give examples where it is non-trivial on the hat flavor.

Knot Floer homology obstructs ribbon concordance

We prove that the map on knot Floer homology induced by a ribbon concordance is injective. As a consequence, we prove that the Seifert genus is monotonic under ribbon concordance. We also generalize a theorem of Gabai about the super-additivity of the Seifert genus under band connected sum. Our result gives evidence for a conjecture of Gordon that ribbon concordance is a partial order on the set of knots.

Connected sums and involutive knot Floer homology

We prove a formula for the conjugation action on the knot Floer complex of the connected sum of two knots. Using the formula we construct a homomorphism from the smooth concordance group to an abelian group consisting of chain complexes with homotopy automorphisms, modulo an equivalence relation. Using our connected sum formula, we perform some example computations of Hendricks and Manolescu's involutive invariants on large surgeries of connected sums of knots.

Link cobordisms and absolute gradings on link Floer homology

We show that the link cobordism maps defined by the author are graded and satisfy a grading change formula. Using the grading change formula, we prove a new bound for $Υ_K(t)$ for knot cobordisms in negative definite 4-manifolds. As another application, we show that the link cobordism maps associated to a connected, closed surface in $S^4$ are determined by the genus of the surface. We also prove a new adjunction relation and adjunction inequality for the link cobordism maps. Along the way, we see how many known results in Heegaard Floer homology can be proven using basic properties of the link cobordism maps, together with the grading change formula.

Link cobordisms and functoriality in link Floer homology

We construct cobordism maps on link Floer homology associated to decorated link cobordisms. The maps are defined on a curved chain homotopy type invariant. We describe the construction, and prove invariance. We also make a comparison with the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology.
