On the emergence of molecular tilt in a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal with broken director-inversion symmetry

The origin of some mesophases of the ferroelectric nematic realm is not yet well understood. In this work we study the highly polar liquid crystal MIO, a close structural analogue of the prototypical ferroelectric nematogen DIO, which exhibits a ferroelectric smectic A to ferroelectric smectic C (SmAF-SmCF) phase transition. Calorimetric, dielectric and light-scattering experiments reveal that it is a second-order phase transition with mean-field behavior, and is driven by the softening of the tilt elastic constant accompanied by the divergence of the amplitude of the associated dielectric mode.

Optimized sample addressing in prism-coupled surface plasmon resonance experiments

In this work we study the walk-off of the beam from the interrogation spot during rotation in surface plasmon resonance experiments using prism-based coupling such as the widespread Kretschmann configuration. The impossibility of maintaining a stationary footprint on the sensing surface with a fixed rotation axis can be of high importance. This would be specially so if samples are not homogeneous such as in arrays for multiplexing. By theoretically analyzing the behavior of the walk-off during rotation around an arbitrary fixed axis, we find an optimal and simple configuration to minimize this effect. The proposed setup is experimentally tested to verify the results and to show its ease of implementation. Interestingly, the conclusions reached may also be applied to other techniques employing reflection prisms.

Experimental test of curvature-driven dynamics in the phase ordering of a two dimensional liquid crystal

We study electric field driven deracemization in an achiral liquid crystal through the formation and coarsening of chiral domains. It is proposed that deracemization in this system is a curvature-driven process. We test this prediction using the exact result for the distribution of hull-enclosed areas in two-dimensional coarsening in non-conserved scalar order parameter dynamics recently obtained [J.J. Arenzon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 061116 (2007)]. The experimental data are in very good agreement with the theory. We thus demonstrate that deracemization in such bent-core liquid crystals belongs to the Allen-Cahn universality class, and that the exact formula, which gives us the statistics of domain sizes during coarsening, can also be used as a strict test for this dynamic universality class.
