Explicit stabilized implementation of singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods

Implicit methods are a natural approach for the integration of stiff differential equations, to avoid time-step restrictions faced by standard explicit integrators. Explicit stabilised integrators are an alternative to implicit methods, which can be particularly efficient in high-dimensional applications with diffusive terms. Towards the best of both worlds, we introduce a new explicit stabilised implementation of a class of diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods. This allows us to implement high-order singly-diagonally-implicit Runge-Kutta methods for advection-diffusion-reaction PDEs with a provable computational cost analogous to that of standard explicit stabilised methods. The main ingredient is to recast the implicit Runge-Kutta update as the steady state of a modified auxiliary system, which is then computed using a partitioned Runge-Kutta-Chebyshev method inspired by optimisation techniques.

Conservative stabilized Runge-Kutta methods for the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation

In this work, we aim at constructing numerical schemes, that are as efficient as possible in terms of cost and conservation of invariants, for the Vlasov--Fokker--Planck system coupled with Poisson or Ampère equation. Splitting methods are used where the linear terms in space are treated by spectral or semi-Lagrangian methods and the nonlinear diffusion in velocity in the collision operator is treated using a stabilized Runge--Kutta--Chebyshev (RKC) integrator, a powerful alternative of implicit schemes. The new schemes are shown to exactly preserve mass and momentum. The conservation of total energy is obtained using a suitable approximation of the electric field. An H-theorem is proved in the semi-discrete case, while the entropy decay is illustrated numerically for the fully discretized problem. Numerical experiments that include investigation of Landau damping phenomenon and bump-on-tail instability are performed to illustrate the efficiency of the new schemes.

A fully adaptive explicit stabilized integrator for advection-diffusion-reaction problems

A novel second order family of explicit stabilized Runge-Kutta-Chebyshev methods for advection-diffusion-reaction equations is introduced. The new methods outperform existing schemes for relatively high Peclet number due to their favorable stability properties and explicitly available coefficients. The construction of the new schemes is based on stabilization using second kind Chebyshev polynomials first used in the construction of the stochastic integrator SK-ROCK. An adaptive algorithm to implement the new scheme is proposed. This algorithm is able to automatically select the suitable step size, number of stages, and damping parameter at each integration step. Numerical experiments that illustrate the efficiency of the new algorithm are presented.

Uniformly accurate schemes for drift--oscillatory stochastic differential equations

In this work, we adapt the {\em micro-macro} methodology to stochastic differential equations for the purpose of numerically solving oscillatory evolution equations. The models we consider are addressed in a wide spectrum of regimes where oscillations may be slow or fast. We show that through an ad-hoc transformation (the micro-macro decomposition), it is possible to retain the usual orders of convergence of Euler-Maruyama method, that is to say, uniform weak order one and uniform strong order one half. We also show that the same orders of uniform accuracy can be achieved by a simple integral scheme. The advantage of the micro-macro scheme is that, in contrast to the integral scheme, it can be generalized to higher order methods.

Explicit stabilized integrators for stiff optimal control problems

Explicit stabilized methods are an efficient alternative to implicit schemes for the time integration of stiff systems of differential equations in large dimension. In this paper, we derive explicit stabilized integrators of orders one and two for the optimal control of stiff systems. We analyze their favorable stability properties based on the continuous optimality conditions. Furthermore, we study their order of convergence taking advantage of the symplecticity of the corresponding partitioned Runge-Kutta method involved for the adjoint equations. Numerical experiments including the optimal control of a nonlinear diffusion-advection PDE illustrate the efficiency of the new approach.

Optimal explicit stabilized integrator of weak order one for stiff and ergodic stochastic differential equations

A new explicit stabilized scheme of weak order one for stiff and ergodic stochastic differential equations (SDEs) is introduced. In the absence of noise, the new method coincides with the classical deterministic stabilized scheme (or Chebyshev method) for diffusion dominated advection-diffusion problems and it inherits its optimal stability domain size that grows quadratically with the number of internal stages of the method. For mean-square stable stiff stochastic problems, the scheme has an optimal extended mean-square stability domain that grows at the same quadratic rate as the deterministic stability domain size in contrast to known existing methods for stiff SDEs [A. Abdulle and T. Li. Commun. Math. Sci., 6(4), 2008, A. Abdulle, G. Vilmart, and K. C. Zygalakis, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 35(4), 2013]. Combined with postprocessing techniques, the new methods achieve a convergence rate of order two for sampling the invariant measure of a class of ergodic SDEs, achieving a stabilized version of the non-Markovian scheme introduced in [B. Leimkuhler, C. Matthews, and M. V. Tretyakov, Proc. R. Soc. A, 470, 2014].
