Gravitational electric-magnetic duality at the light ring and quasinormal mode isospectrality in effective field theories

Black hole perturbations are characterized by a superposition of damped exponentials known as quasinormal modes. In general relativity, the spectra of parity-even and parity-odd quasinormal modes coincide -- a property known as isospectrality, which is typically broken by corrections beyond general relativity. Recently, certain higher-derivative operators were shown to preserve isospectrality in the high-frequency (eikonal) regime. Motivated by the relation between the light ring Penrose limit and the eikonal limit, we study isospectrality in a class of plane-wave spacetimes. In general relativity, we show that dynamical metric fluctuations on these backgrounds admit a gravitational analog of electric-magnetic duality, which enforces isospectrality. Requiring this duality to persist in the presence of higher-derivative corrections constrains the couplings so that isospectrality is preserved. We conclude that gravitational electric-magnetic duality at the light ring is the organizing principle behind isospectrality in the eikonal limit, and we conjecture that this remains true for other duality-invariant corrections to general relativity.

Continuous symmetries and charge measurement of boundary operators in holography

We study holographic charge measurement for continuous internal symmetries. Charged boundary operators are characterized by Wilson lines of bulk gauge fields ending on the boundary, while charge measurement is performed using U-shaped defects hanging from the boundary. We derive universal features of this process from a low-energy point of view, and show how the hanging defect picture mimics the thickening regularization of continuous symmetry operators in field theory. Furthermore, we provide explicit top-down realizations in AdS/CFT setups in Type IIB string theory and M-theory, featuring Abelian as well as non-Abelian symmetries. In the case of Type IIB constructions, we analyze the brane dynamics underlying the charge measurement process. Along the way, we also characterize how hanging brane configurations can be regarded as being topological, and demonstrate how tachyon dynamics account for their fusion rules.

Global symmetries: locality, unitarity, and regularity

We study the apparent tension between locality and unitarity for symmetries in quantum field theory. This emerges in the context of categorical symmetries where symmetry operators are generically non-invertible. We argue that locality imposes particular regularities in the action of symmetries on the Hilbert space. This allows us to introduce an observable that can measure the properties of the non-locality for symmetry operators. We study it for a class of examples and demonstrate that this observable can encode data associated to the fusion algebra of symmetries.

Gravitational Atoms from Topological Stars

We study the bound states of a massive scalar field around a topological star, and show that these are strictly normal modes. This yields a genuine gravitational atom, sharply distinguishing horizonless objects from black holes. We show that the modes are controlled by the field's Compton wavelength compared to the size of the star. When the Compton wavelength is large, the field forms a cloud with a hydrogen-like spectrum, while in the opposite regime it is localized along timelike trajectories. When the two scales are comparable the spectrum becomes richer, and we characterize it in detail allowing the field to carry electric charge and Kaluza--Klein momentum.

Non-Abelian Symmetry Operators from Hanging Branes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We investigate the holographic realization of topological operators for continuous non-Abelian symmetries in quantum field theories. As a concrete case study, we focus on Type IIB string theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ which admits an $SO(6)$ isometry, dual to the R-symmetry in 4d $N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We argue that symmetry operators for continuous symmetries are generally realized by bound states of D5-branes and KK monopoles hanging from the conformal boundary. Together they account for the contributions to the Gauss' law constraints from the self-dual 5-form flux and the Einstein-Hilbert term respectively. We also demonstrate how the D5-KK bound state measures the representation of the endpoint of Wilson lines constructed by D3-branes.

On the Physics of Higher Condensation Defects

We study the structure of topological defects for finite Abelian symmetries in quantum field theories, and argue on physical grounds that they satisfy the definition of a higher fusion category proposed by Johnson-Freyd. Our primary focus is on the requirement of Karoubi completeness, i.e. the factorization conditions on higher condensation defects. We demonstrate this on a tree of such defects, constructed by successive higher gauging, explicitly using Lagrangian techniques in a concrete four-dimensional example, before turning to more general field theories. Along the way we also comment on the phenomenon where decoupled topological field theories appear as fusion coefficients. We further discuss the categorical role of anomalies, and how they may affect the properties of (higher) condensation defects.

Symmetry Operators and Gravity

We argue that topological operators for continuous symmetries written in terms of currents need regularization, which effectively gives them a small but finite width. The regulated operator is a finite tension object which fluctuates. In the zero-width limit these fluctuations freeze, recovering the properties of a topological operator. When gravity is turned on, the zero-width limit becomes ill-defined, thereby prohibiting the existence of topological operators.

Non-Invertible Symmetries, Brane Dynamics, and Tachyon Condensation

We study the Symmetry Topological Field Theory in holography associated with 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(M)$. From this, all the bulk symmetry operators are computed and matched to various D-brane configurations. The fusion algebra of the operators emerges from brane dynamics. In particular, we show that the symmetry operators are purely determined from the center-of-mass modes of the branes. We identify the TQFT fusion coefficients with the relative motion of the branes. We also establish the origin of condensation defects, arising from fusion of non-invertible operators, as the consequence of tachyon condensation in brane-anti-brane pairs.

Cavity effect in the quasinormal mode spectrum of topological stars

We study scalar perturbations of topological solitons, smooth horizonless solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory that correspond to coherent states of gravity via the dynamics of extra compact dimensions. First, we compute scalar quasinormal modes for topological stars that have a single unstable photon sphere, and we show that the spectrum is very similar to that of a black hole with the same photon sphere. Next, we study topological stars that have both a stable inner photon sphere and an unstable one. The first few quasinormal modes are localized around the inner photon sphere. The spectrum also contains ''black-hole like modes'' localized at the unstable outer photon sphere. The frequencies of these modes are similar to those of a black hole, but their imaginary part is smaller due to a cavity effect associated with the inner photon sphere. The longer damping produced by this trapping effect may have implications for black hole spectroscopy.

Geometric Resolution of Schwarzschild Horizon

We provide the first example of a geometric transition that resolves the Schwarzschild black hole into a smooth microstructure in eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. The geometry is indistinguishable from a Schwarzschild black hole dressed with a scalar field in four dimensions, referred to as a Schwarzschild scalarwall. In eleven dimensions, the scalar field arises as moduli of the torus. The resolution occurs at an infinitesimal scale above the horizon, where it transitions to a smooth bubbling spacetime supported by M2-brane flux.

Estimating global charge violating amplitudes from wormholes

We consider the scattering of high energy and ultra relativistic spherically symmetric shells in asymptotically AdS$_D$ spacetimes. We analyze an exclusive amplitude where a single spherically symmetric shell goes in and a single one comes out, such that the two have different global symmetry charges of the effective gravity theory. We study a simple wormhole configuration that computes the square of the amplitude and analyze its properties.

Imaging Topological Solitons: the Microstructure Behind the Shadow

We study photon geodesics in topological solitons that have the same asymptotic properties as Schwarzschild black holes. These are coherent states in string theory corresponding to pure deformations of spacetime through the dynamics of compact extra dimensions. We compare these solutions with Schwarzschild black holes by computing null geodesics, deriving Lyapunov exponents, and imaging their geometries as seen by a distant observer. We show that topological solitons are remarkably similar to black holes in apparent size and scattering properties, while being smooth and horizonless. Incoming photons experience very high redshift, inducing phenomenological horizon-like behaviors from the point of view of photon scattering. Thus, they provide a compelling case for real-world gravitational solitons and topological alternatives to black holes from string theory.

A Panorama Of Physical Mathematics c. 2022

What follows is a broad-brush overview of the recent synergistic interactions between mathematics and theoretical physics of quantum field theory and string theory. The discussion is forward-looking, suggesting potentially useful and fruitful directions and problems, some old, some new, for further development of the subject. This paper is a much extended version of the Snowmass whitepaper on physical mathematics [1].

Non-BPS Bubbling Geometries in AdS$_3$

We construct large classes of non-BPS smooth horizonless geometries that are asymptotic to AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$ in type IIB supergravity. These geometries are supported by electromagnetic flux corresponding to D1-D5 charges. We show that Einstein equations for systems with eight commuting Killing vectors decompose into a set of Ernst equations, thereby admitting an integrable structure. This feature, which can a priori be applied to other AdS$_D\times\mathcal{C}$ settings in supergravity, allows us to use solution-generating techniques associated with the Ernst formalism. We explicitly derive solutions by applying the charged Weyl formalism that we have previously developed. These are sourced internally by a chain of bolts that correspond to regions where the orbits of the commuting Killing vectors collapse smoothly. We show that these geometries can be interpreted as non-BPS T$^4$ and S$^3$ deformations on global AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$ that are located at the center of AdS$_3$. These non-BPS deformations can be made arbitrarily small and should therefore correspond to non-supersymmetric operators in the D1-D5 CFT. Finally, we also construct interesting bound states of non-extremal BTZ black holes connected by regular bolts.

Non-Invertible Symmetries from Holography and Branes

We propose a systematic approach to deriving symmetry generators of Quantum Field Theories in holography. Central to this are the Gauss law constraints in the Hamiltonian quantization of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs), which are obtained from supergravity. In turn we realize the symmetry generators from world-volume theories of D-branes in holography. Our main focus is on non-invertible symmetries, which have emerged in the past year as a new type of symmetry in $d\geq 4$ QFTs. We exemplify our proposal in the holographic confinement setup, dual to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super-Yang Mills. In the brane-picture, the fusion of non-invertible symmetries naturally arises from the Myers effect on D-branes. In turn, their action on line defects is modeled by the Hanany-Witten effect.

Aspects of Irregular Punctures via Holography

We present new families of $AdS_5$ solutions in M-theory preserving 4d ${\mathcal N = 2}$ supersymmetry. We perform a systematic analysis of holographic observables for these solutions, providing evidence for an interpretation in terms of 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of Argyres-Douglas type, realized in class $\mathcal S$ via a sphere with one irregular, and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions exhibit internal M5-brane sources that correspond to the irregular puncture. For a family of solutions, we identify explicitly the class $\mathcal S$ puncture data and perform a detailed match, including Higgs branch operators. For other families we comment on proposed field theory duals, based on irregular punctures labeled by nested Young tableaux.

Schwarzschild-like Topological Solitons

We construct the first class of topological solitons in gravity that are supported by internal electromagnetic flux with vanishing net charges. The solutions are obtained in a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a three-form flux, and admit an uplift to type IIB supergravity on T$^4$. They are asymptotic to a torus fibration over four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. An interesting class corresponds to solitons with a BPS particle and its anti-BPS partner held apart by a vacuum bubble. In type IIB, they correspond to bound states of BPS and anti-BPS D1-D5 extremal black holes. These metrics are a particular limit of a larger class of axially symmetric metrics that we construct and that describe smooth horizonless topological solitons. They correspond to bound states of three non-BPS bubbles on a line. An important achievement is that the outer bubbles can carry arbitrary D1-D5 charges that we can tune to vanishing net charges. We discuss their properties and compare them to a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of the same mass. We show that they have a long throat with a large redshift, and that they are ultra-compact with a characteristic size of 1.52 times the Schwarzschild radius.
