Cosmology in Weyl Transverse Gravity

We study the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology in the Weyl-transverse (WTDiff) gravity in a general space-time dimension. The WTDiff gravity is invariant under both the local Weyl (conformal) transformation and the volume preserving diffeormorphisms (transverse diffeomorphisms) and is believed to be equivalent to general relativity at least at the classical level (perhaps, even in the quantum regime). It is explicitly shown by solving the equations of motion that the FLRW metric is a classical solution in the WTDiff gravity only when the spatial metric is flat, that is, the Euclidean space, and the lapse function is a nontrivial function of the scale factor.

Reissner-Nordstrom Solution from Weyl Transverse Gravity

We study classical solutions in the Weyl-transverse (WTDiff) gravity coupled to an electro-magnetic field in four space-time dimensions. The WTDiff gravity is invariant under both the local Weyl (conformal) transformation and the volume preserving diffeormorphisms (transverse diffeomorphisms) and is known to be equivalent to general relativity at least at the classical level (perhaps even in the quantum regime). In particular, we find that only in four space-time dimensions, the charged Reissner-Nordstrom black hole metric is a classical solution when it is expressed in the Cartesian coordinate system.

Fake Conformal Symmetry in Unimodular Gravity

We study Weyl symmetry (local conformal symmetry) in unimodular gravity. It is shown that the Noether currents for both Weyl symmetry and global scale symmetry, identically vanish as in the conformally invariant scalar-tensor gravity. We clearly explain why in the class of conformally invariant gravitational theories, the Noether currents vanish by starting with the conformally invariant scalar-tensor gravity. Moreover, we comment on both classical and quantum-mechanical equivalences among Einstein's general relativity, the conformally invariant scalar-tensor gravity and the Weyl-transverse (WTDiff) gravity. Finally, we discuss the Weyl current in the conformally invariant scalar action and see that it is also vanishing.

Topological Induced Gravity

We propose a topological model of induced gravity (pregeometry) where both Newton's coupling constant and the cosmological constant appear as integration constants in solving field equations. The matter sector of a scalar field is also considered, and by solving field equations it is shown that various types of cosmological solutions in the FRW universe can be obtained. A detailed analysis is given of the meaning of the BRST transformations, which make the induced gravity be a topological field theory, by means of the canonical quantization analysis, and the physical reason why such BRST transformations are needed in the present formalism is clarified. Finally, we propose a dynamical mechanism for fixing the Lagrange multiplier fields by following the Higgs mechanism. The present study clearly indicates that the induced gravity can be constructed at the classical level without recourse to quantum fluctuations of matter and suggests an interesting relationship between the induced gravity and the topological quantum field theory.

Induced Gravity and Topological Quantum Field Theory

We construct an induced gravity (pregeometry) where both the Newton constant and the cosmological constant appear as integration constants in solving field equations. By adding the kinetic terms of ghosts and antighosts, an action of the induced gravity is transformed to a topological field theory. Moreover, by solving field equations of the topological field theory in the FRW universe, we find an inflation solution. The present study might shed some light on a close relationship between the induced gravity and the topological quantum field theory.

Induced Gravity from Curvature Density Preserving Diffeomorphisms

We construct not only an induced gravity model with the restricted diffeomorphisms, that is, transverse diffeomorphisms which preserves the curvature density, but also that with the full diffeomorphisms. By solving the equations of motion, it turns out that these models produce Einstein's equations with a certain Newton's constant in addition to the constraint for the curvature density. In the limit of the infinite Newton constant, the models give rise to induced gravity. Moreover, we discuss cosmological solutions on the basis of the gravitational models at hand.

Conformal Higgs Gravity

We construct a model of conformal gravity with Higgs field. This model has a positive Newton's constant and exhibits a novel symmetry breaking mechanism of gauge symmetries. A possible application to cosmology is briefly mentioned.

Hawking Radiation of a Charged Black Hole in Quantum Gravity

We study black hole radiation of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with an electric charge in the framework of quantum gravity. Based on a canonical quantization for a spherically symmetric geometry, under physically plausible assumptions, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation in the regions not only between the outer apparent horizon and the spatial infinity but also between the spacetime singularity and the inner apparent horizon, and then show that the mass loss rate of an evaporating black hole due to thermal radiation agrees with the semiclassical result when we choose an integration constant properly by physical reasoning. Furthermore, we also solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation in the region between the inner Cauchy horizon and the outer apparent horizon, and show that the mass loss rate of an evaporating black hole has the same expression. The present study is the natural generalization of the case of a Schwarzschild black hole to that of a charged Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

Hawking Radiation inside Black Holes in Quantum Gravity

We study black hole radiation inside black holes within the framework of quantum gravity. First, we review on our previous work of a canonical quantization for a spherically symmetric geometry where one of the spatial coordinates is treated as the time variable, since we think of the interior region of a black hole. Based on this formalism, under physically plausible assumptions, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation inside the black hole, and show that the mass-loss rate of an evaporating black hole due to thermal radiation is equivalent to the result obtained by Hawking in his semi-classical approach. A remarkable point is that our assumptions make the momentum constraint coincide with the Hamiltonian constraint up to an irrelevant overall factor. Furthermore, for comparison, we solve the Wheeler-De Witt equation outside the black hole as well, and see that the mass-loss rate of an evaporating black hole has the same expression. The present analysis suggests that the black hole radiation comes from the black hole singularity. We also comment on the Birkhoff theorem in quantum gravity.

Conformal Higgs Inflation

We investigate a locally scale-invariant (that is, Weyl-invariant) theory which describes the coupling of gravity and the standard model from the viewpont of the Higgs mechanism and inflation. It is shown that this theory exhibits a peculiar feature of a coupling between the gauge field and the inflaton in a large field limit whereas it nicely describes the standard model coupled to general relativity in a small field limit. Moreover, we discuss a possibility that this Weyl invariant theory could explain the recent BICEP2 measurement by deforming the potential term in an appropriate way, and find it to be difficult to do that even if we introduce a non-analytical type of the potential.

Quadratic Chaotic Inflation from Higgs Inflation

Stimulated with the recent discovery of B-mode by BICEP2, we discuss the relation between a Higgs inflation and a chaotic inflation with quadratic potential. Starting with a generalized Higgs inflation model, we derive a condition for obtaining the quadratic chaotic inflation. It is shown that the running of the Higgs self-coupling constant in the Jordan frame plays a decisive role when the generalized Higgs inflation model coincides with the Higgs inflation model in a small-field limit.

Higgs Mechanism in Scale-Invariant Gravity

We consider a Higgs mechanism in scale-invariant theories of gravitation. It is shown that in spontaneous symmetry breakdown of scale invariance, gauge symmetries are also broken spontaneously even without the Higgs potential if the corresponding charged scalar fields couple to a scalar curvature in a non-minimal way. In this gravity-inspired new Higgs mechanism, the non-minimal coupling term, which is scale-invariant, plays a critical role. Various generalizations of this mechanism are possible and particularly the generalizations to non-abelian gauge groups and a scalar field with multi-components are presented in some detail. Moreover, we apply our finding to a scale-invariant extension of the standard model (SM) and calculate radiative corrections. In particular, we elucidate the coupling between the dilaton and the Higgs particle and show that the dilaton mass takes a value around the GeV scale owing to quantum effects even if the dilaton is massless at the classical level.

Classically Scale-invariant B-L Model and Conformal Gravity

We consider a coupling of conformal gravity to the classically scale-invariant B-L extended standard model which has been recently proposed as a phenomenologically viable model realizing the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of breakdown of the electro-weak symmetry. As in a globally scale-invariant dilaton gravity, it is also shown in a locally scale-invariant conformal gravity that without recourse to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the B-L gauge symmetry is broken in the process of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the local scale invariance (Weyl invariance) at the tree level and as a result the B-L gauge field becomes massive via the Higgs mechanism. As a bonus of conformal gravity, the massless dilaton field does not appear and the parameters in front of the non-minimal coupling of gravity are completely fixed in the present model. This observation clearly shows that the conformal gravity has a practical application even if the scalar field does not possess any dynamical degree of freedom owing to the local scale symmetry.

Classically Scale-invariant B-L Model and Dilaton Gravity

We consider a coupling of dilaton gravity to the classically scale-invariant B-L extended standard model which has been recently proposed as a phenomenologically viable model realizing the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of breakdown of the electroweak symmetry. It is shown in the present model that without recourse to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the B-L gauge symmetry is broken in the process of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of scale invariance at the tree level and as a result the B-L gauge field becomes massive via the Higgs mechanism. Since the dimensionful parameter is only the Planck mass in our model, one is forced to pick up very small coupling constants if one wishes to realize the breaking of the B-L symmetry at TeV scale.

Remarks on Two Gamma Ray Lines from the Inner Galaxy

Monochromatic gamma-ray lines are thought to be the smoking gun signal of the annihilation or decay of dark matter since they do not suffer from deflection or absorption on galactic scales. A recent claim on strong evidence for two gamma-ray lines from the inner galaxy suggests that two-body final states might be one photon plus a Z boson or one photon plus a Higgs boson. In this study, we investigate which final state is more possible by analyzing the energy resolution of the Fermi-LAT. It is concluded that the former case, i.e. one photon plus a Z boson is more plausible than the latter one, i.e. one photon and a Higgs boson since in the latter case the mass of dark matter particle shows tension with a constraint coming from the energy resolution of the Fermi-LAT.

Velocity of Light in Dark Matter with Charge

We propose an interesting mechanism to reconcile the recent experiments of the Michelson-Morley type and slowdown of the velocity of light in dark matter with a fractional electric charge when the index of refraction of dark matter depends on the frequency of a photon. After deriving the formula for the velocity of light in a medium with the index of refraction $n(ω)$ in a relativistic regime, it is shown that the local anisotropy of the light speed is proportional to the second order in $n(ω) - 1$. This result implies that the experiments of the Michelson-Morley type do not give rise to a stringent constraint on the slowdown of the velocity of light in dark matter with electric charge.

Subluminal OPERA Neutrinos

The OPERA collaboration has announced to have observed superluminal neutrinos with a mean energy 17.5 GeV, but afterward the superluminal interpretation of the OPERA results has been refuted theoretically by Cherenkov-like radiation and pion decay. In a recent work, we have proposed a kinematical resolution to this problem. A key idea in our resolution is that the OPERA neutrinos are not superluminal but subluminal since they travel faster than the observed speed of light in vacuum on the earth while they do slower than the true speed of light in vacuum determining the causal structure of events. In this article, we dwell upon our ideas and present some concrete models, which realize our ideas, based on spin 0, 1 and 2 bosonic fields. We also discuss that the principle of invariant speed of light in special relativity can be replaced with the principle of a universal limiting speed.
