The Kernel Unipotent Conjecture and the vanishing of Massey products for odd rigid fields

A major difficult problem in Galois theory is the characterization of profinite groups which are realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. Recently the Kernel $n$-Unipotent Conjecture and the Vanishing $n$-Massey Conjecture for $n\geq 3$ were formulated. These conjectures evolved in the last forty years as a byproduct of the application of topological methods to Galois cohomology. We show that both of these conjectures are true for odd rigid fields. This is the first case of a significant family of fields where both of the conjectures are verified besides fields whose Galois groups of $p$-maximal extensions are free pro-$p$-groups. We also prove the Kernel Unipotent Conjecture for Demushkin groups of rank 2, and establish a number of further related results.

Filtrations of free groups as intersections

For several natural filtrations of a free group S we express the n-th term of the filtration as the intersection of all kernels of homomorphisms from S to certain groups of upper-triangular unipotent matrices. This generalizes a classical result of Grun for the lower central filtration. In particular, we do this for the n-th term in the lower p-central filtration of S.

On graphs and valuations

In the last two decades new techniques emerged to construct valuations on an infinite division ring $D,$ given a normal subgroup $N\subseteq D$ of finite index. These techniques were based on the commuting graph of $D^{\times}/N$ in the case where $D$ is non-commutative, and on the Milnor K-graph on $D^{\times}/N,$ in the case where $D$ is commutative. In this paper we unify these two approaches and consider V-graphs on $D^{\times}/N$ and how they lead to valuations. We furthermore generalize previous results to situations of finitely many valuations.

The Zassenhaus filtration, Massey Products, and Representations of Profinite Groups

We consider the p-Zassenhaus filtration (G_n) of a profinite group G. Suppose that G=S/N for a free profinite group S and a normal subgroup N of S contained in S_n. Under a cohomological assumption on the n-fold Massey products (which holds e.g., if the p-cohomological dimension of G is at most 1), we prove that G_{n+1} is the intersection of all kernels of upper-triangular unipotent (n+1)-dimensional representations of G over \mathbb F_p. This extends earlier results by Minac, Spira, and the author on the structure of absolute Galois groups of fields.

Small Galois groups that encode valuations

Let $p$ be a prime number and let $F$ be a field containing a root of unity of order $p$. We prove that a certain very small canonical Galois group $(G_F)_{[3]}$ over $F$ encodes the valuations on $F$ whose value group is not $p$-divisible and which satisfy a variant of Hensel's lemma.

On the descending central sequence of absolute Galois groups

Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $F$ a field containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. We prove a new restriction on the group-theoretic structure of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of $F$. Namely, the third subgroup $G_F^{(3)}$ in the descending $p$-central sequence of $G_F$ is the intersection of all open normal subgroups $N$ such that $G_F/N$ is 1, $\mathbb{Z}/p^2$, or the modular group $M_{p^3}$ of order $p^3$.

Quotients of absolute Galois groups which determine the entire Galois cohomology

For prime power $q=p^d$ and a field $F$ containing a root of unity of order $q$ we show that the Galois cohomology ring $H^*(G_F,\dbZ/q)$ is determined by a quotient $G_F^{[3]}$ of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ related to its descending $q$-central sequence. Conversely, we show that $G_F^{[3]}$ is determined by the lower cohomology of $G_F$. This is used to give new examples of pro-$p$ groups which do not occur as absolute Galois groups of fields.

Invitation to higher local fields, Part II, section 7: Recovering higher global and local fields from Galois groups - an algebraic approach

A main problem in Galois theory is to characterize the fields with a given absolute Galois group. We apply a K-theoretic method for constructing valuations to study this problem in various situations. As a first application we obtain an algebraic proof of the 0-dimensional case of Grothendieck's anabelian conjecture (proven by Pop), which says that finitely generated infinite fields are determined up to purely inseparable extensions by their absolute Galois groups. As a second application (which is a joint work with Fesenko) we analyze the arithmetic structure of fields with the same absolute Galois group as a higher-dimensional local field.
