Experimental single-impulse magnetic focusing of launched cold atoms

Single-impulse three-dimensional magnetic focusing of vertically launched cold atoms has been observed. Four different configurations of the lens were used to vary the relative radial and axial focusing properties. Compact focused clouds of 85Rb were seen for all four configurations. It is shown that an atom-optical ray matrix approach for describing the lensing action is insufficient. Numerical simulation using a full approximation to the lens's magnetic field shows very good agreement with the radial focusing properties of the lens. However, the axial (vertical direction) focusing properties are less well described and the reasons for this are discussed.

Absolute absorption on the rubidium D lines: comparison between theory and experiment

We study the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on the D lines. A detailed model of the susceptibility is developed which takes into account the absolute linestrengths of the allowed electric dipole transitions and the motion of the atoms parallel to the probe beam. All transitions from both hyperfine levels of the ground term of both isotopes are incorporated. The absorption and refractive index as a function of frequency are expressed in terms of the complementary error function. The absolute absorption profiles are compared with experiment, and are found to be in excellent agreement provided a sufficiently weak probe beam with an intensity under one thousandth of the saturation intensity is used. The importance of hyperfine pumping for open transitions is discussed in the context of achieving the weak-probe limit. Theory and experiment show excellent agreement, with an rms error better than 0.2% for the D2 line at 16.5 degrees C.

A heated vapor cell unit for DAVLL in atomic rubidium

The design and performance of a compact heated vapor cell unit for realizing a dichroic atomic vapor laser lock (DAVLL) for the D2 transitions in atomic rubidium is described. A 5 cm-long vapor cell is placed in a double-solenoid arrangement to produce the required magnetic field; the heat from the solenoid is used to increase the vapor pressure and correspondingly the DAVLL signal. We have characterized experimentally the dependence of important features of the DAVLL signal on magnetic field and cell temperature. For the weaker transitions both the amplitude and gradient of the signal are increased by an order of magnitude.

Sagnac Interferometry in a Slow-Light Medium

We use a Sagnac interferometer to measure the dispersive and absorptive properties of room temperature Rubidium vapor on the D_2 line at 780.2 nm. We apply a pump beam such that the resulting Lambda system exhibits Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. Using a "biased alignment" technique we demonstrate a direct and robust method of measuring the rapid variation in the refractive index. Such a "slow-light" Sagnac interferometer is ideally suited to precision measurement applications such as magnetometry and inertial sensing.
