Fairness-First Design Thinking for Software Architecture

Fairness issues often remain hidden in digital systems, making them difficult to detect and even more difficult to address. In this study, we introduce a fairness-first Design Thinking (DT) approach to support addressing fairness concerns in software architecture (SA) design. We implemented our approach in a graduate-level course where students executed all steps of our DT approach as part of an assignment. We analyzed the assignment data to reflect on the implications for applying the DT approach in SA and teaching the DT approach in SA education. As a result of this study, we provide (i) a DT approach for SA, (ii) implications of the DT approach on handling fairness in both problem and solution spaces, and (iii) implications for education. Our reflections highlight that fairness theory and context identification are essential for a holistic, fairness-first design. We propose the use of composite views to address cross-cutting concerns such as fairness. In the future, we will update the course material to provide end-to-end fairness traceability in SA, helping students to understand how fairness concerns can be translated into actionable design decisions.

Supporting a Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Agriculture Federation using Dashboarding

Reliable access to food is a basic requirement in any sustainable society. However, achieving food security for all is still a challenge, especially for poor populations in urban environments. The project Feed4Food aims to use a federation of Living Labs of urban agriculture in different countries as a way to increase urban food security for vulnerable populations. Since different Living Labs have different characteristics and ways of working, the vision is that the knowledge obtained in individual Living Labs can be leveraged at the federation level through federated learning. With this specific goal in mind, a dashboarding tool is being established. In this work, we present a reusable process for establishing a dashboard that supports local awareness and decision making, as well as federated learning. The focus is on the first steps of this creation, i.e., defining what data to collect (through the creation of Key Performance Indicators) and how to visualize it. We exemplify the proposed process with the Feed4Food project and report on our insights so far.

Ten Years of Software Engineering in Society

In the international software engineering research community, the premier conference (ICSE) features since a decade a special track on the role of SE In Society (or SEIS track). In this work, we want to use the articles published in this track as a proxy or example of the research in this field, in terms of covered topics, trends, and gaps. Also, since SEIS was originally defined with a special focus on sustainability, we want to observe the evolution of the research in this respect. We conducted a mapping study of the 123 articles published in the SEIS track and among the results identified (i) trends pertaining sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and open-source software; (ii) gaps regarding concrete interventions to solve problems (e.g., workplace discrimination, the emotional well-being of developers); and (iii) a main sustainability focus in the social dimension, while the environmental dimension is the least frequently addressed. As future work, our aim is to stimulate discussion in the community and we hope to inspire replications of this work in other conference venues.

Using Sustainability Impact Scores for Software Architecture Evaluation

For future regulatory compliance, organizations must assess and report on the state of sustainability in terms of its impacts over time. Sustainability, being a multidimensional concern, is complex to quantify. This complexity further increases with the interdependencies of the quality concerns across different sustainability dimensions. The research literature lacks a holistic way to evaluate sustainability at the software architecture level. With this study, our aim is to identify quality attribute (QA) trade-offs at the software architecture level and quantify the related sustainability impact. To this aim we present an improved version of the Sustainability Impact Score (SIS), building on our previous work. The SIS facilitates the identification and quantification of trade-offs in terms of their sustainability impact, leveraging a risk- and importance-based prioritization mechanism. To evaluate our approach, we apply it to an industrial case study involving a multi-model framework for integrated decision-making in the energy sector. Our study reveals that technical quality concerns have significant, often unrecognized impacts across sustainability dimensions. The SIS coupled with QA trade-offs can help practitioners make informed decisions that align with their sustainability goals. Early evaluations can help organizations mitigate sustainability risks by taking preventive actions.

The Sustainability Assessment Framework Toolkit: A Decade of Modeling Experience

Software intensive systems play a crucial role in most, if not all, aspects of modern society. As such, both their sustainability and their role in supporting sustainable processes, must be realized by design. To this aim, the architecture of software intensive systems should be designed to support sustainability goals; and measured to understand how effectively they do so. In this paper, we present the Sustainability Assessment Framework (SAF) Toolkit -- a set of instruments we developed to support software architects and design decision makers in modeling sustainability as a software quality property. The SAF Toolkit is the result of our experience gained in over a decade of cases in collaboration with industrial partners. We illustrate the toolkit with examples stemming from various cases. We extract our lessons learned, and our current research and future plans to extend the SAF Toolkit for further architecture modeling and measurement.
